Germany suspects ‘targeted attack’ on Russian gas pipeline – media

Berlin suspects the leak that caused Nord Stream to lose pressure may not be a coincidence

While the loss of pressure in three natural gas pipelines between Russia and Germany is still officially being investigated, Berlin is reportedly no longer convinced it was a coincidence, and suspects a “targeted attack” on behalf of either Ukraine or Russia, the newspaper Tagesspiegel reported on Monday evening.

Pressure in one of the Nord Stream 2 lines dropped sharply overnight, followed by the same happening to both Nord Stream 1 pipes on Monday afternoon. Denmark announced that a gas leak was spotted off the coast of Bornholm island in the Baltic Sea and closed the area for maritime traffic, but could not confirm if this was what caused the pressure loss.

According to Tagesspiegel, the German government and agencies investigating the incident “can’t imagine a scenario that isn't a targeted attack,” according to an anonymous source familiar with their assessments. “Everything speaks against a coincidence.”

The outlet explained that a deliberate attack on the bottom of the sea has to involve special forces, navy divers or a submarine. Berlin is reportedly examining two possible scenarios. In the first, Ukraine or “Ukraine-affiliated forces” could be behind the attack. The second option is that Russia did it as a “false flag,” to make Ukraine look bad and drive the EU energy prices even higher.

With Nord Stream offline since late August, Russian gas can only be delivered to Germany and central Europe via the older pipelines going through Poland and Ukraine, Tagesspiegel noted.

“We are in the process of clarifying the situation here,” a spokeswoman for the federal ministry of economics told the outlet. “We don't currently know what caused the pressure drop.”

Nord Stream 1 was built in 2011. Construction on Nord Stream 2 began in 2018, and took much longer due to political pressure and economic sanctions from the US. NS2 was finished and pressurized by September 2021. However, two days prior to Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, the German government put its certification on indefinite hold, and has categorically refused any suggestion from Moscow – or its own people – to unblock the pipeline.

Ukraine makes decision on mobilization

Kiev will not call up additional troops in response to Russia’s partial mobilization, a presidential adviser said

Ukraine will not announce additional mobilization in response to the referendums on joining Russia currently underway in the eastern part of the country, Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, told German TV program Tagesschau on Monday.

“We have already created reserves through the territorial defense system and will actively use these reserves. We should not announce additional mobilization today,” he told the outlet. “We have everything, and we are ready for more Russian troops.” (Kek)

Podolyak insisted Ukraine was losing far fewer soldiers than Russia, echoing the words of Zelensky, who said last week that his army was suffering at least 50 daily casualties but that Russian losses dwarfed that figure by a factor of five. Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu had announced just days earlier that, while Russia has lost 6,000 troops since the beginning of the offensive in February, Ukraine has lost about 61,000. According to the Ukrainian side, about 55,000 Russian soldiers have been killed. According to the CIA, by the end of July Russia had lost more than 15,000 troops in Ukraine. British intelligence reported 20,000 deaths back in June.

The Ukrainian presidential adviser also claimed Russia uses 90% of its firepower destroying critical and civilian infrastructure and the civilians who need it, blaming its military for wiping out 1,200 settlements in areas Kiev has been shelling for eight years. Amnesty International had earlier criticized Ukraine for stationing its soldiers inside residential buildings, schools and hospitals, denouncing the use of civilians as human shields as a violation of international humanitarian law.

While Ukraine may not need additional manpower just yet, Podolyak said, a military victory would require tanks – and not the low-budget Soviet variety, either. Only “Western-style machines such as the Leopard 2” will do, he told his German audience.

Ukraine and Germany have locked horns over Berlin’s refusal to supply Leopards, with German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht declaring earlier this month that her country had reached its limit for supplying military aid, and could not give away more weapons without endangering its own security. Germany has already delivered Singer anti-aircraft missile systems, Gerard anti-aircraft gun tanks, and Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled howitzers to Ukraine, but Kiev – and even some German officials – are unsatisfied with anything short of the Leopards.

Referendums on joining Russia are underway in the Russian-controlled eastern regions of Kherson and Zaporozhye as well as the independent Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. Moscow announced a partial mobilization last week.

This is kind of funny considering that Ukraine is full of propaganda and they dont have nearly the power or discipline they would need to win a war. Good luck

EU central bank warns ‘outlook is darkening’

The ECB has slashed growth forecasts, hiking interest rates even as it predicts inflation will climb further

Europe is facing lower-than-expected economic growth as inflation continues to climb, European Central Bank chief Christine Lagarde revealed on Monday, explaining that the ECB had raised interest rates by 75 basis points in an attempt to control soaring prices.

Speaking before the European Parliament’s Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs on Monday, Lagarde admitted that “inflation remains far too high and is likely to stay above our target for an extended period.”

The former IMF boss warned that the “economic consequences for the euro area” of “Russia’s unjustified war of aggression on Ukraine” had spiraled further since June, a reference to Western sanctions on Russian oil and gas, which have sent fuel prices skyrocketing.

The outlook is darkening,” she said.

While the Eurozone economy grew 0.8% in the second quarter, Lagarde said the ECB expected activity to “slow substantially” over the rest of 2022, to a total of 3.1% over the year and a mere 0.9% for all of 2023. Things will improve marginally in 2024, with growth projected at 1.9%, she said.

Much of this quarter’s economic growth was due to “strong consumer spending” driven by the reopening of Covid-shuttered industries like tourism, Lagarde said, while noting a decline in global demand due to what she called the “worsening terms of trade.”

High inflation is being “reinforced by gas supply disruptions,” she said, adding that “uncertainty” and “falling household and business confidence” were also contributing to the bleak predictions.

Inflation hit 9.1% in August, driven by energy and food prices. The ECB has hiked its inflation projections accordingly, setting 8.1% for 2022, 5.5% for 2023, and 2.3% for 2024, with Lagarde pointing the finger again at “major disruptions in energy supplies.”

The central bank’s recent 75-point interest increase earlier this month was only the second hike in 11 years, after it added 50 basis points in July. Lagarde said the increase would “dampen demand” but ensure that “inflation expectations remain well anchored.”

Lagarde admitted the situation is expected to “get worse before it gets better” with regard to high energy and food costs — the most important issues for two out of three Europeans right now, according to a Eurobarometer survey.

She urged governments, however, to make sure fiscal support for “the most vulnerable households” was “temporary and targeted” so as not to exacerbate “inflationary pressures.

Seoul reluctant to get dragged into Taiwan conflict

President Yoon has said that South Korean and US forces in his country need to focus on potential threats from Pyongyang

South Korea’s president has expressedreluctance to help the US defend Taiwan against a Chinese attack, saying his country’s military and American troops stationed on the peninsula would need to focus on increased risk of a conflict with North Korea in such a scenario.

“In the case of military conflict around Taiwan, there would be increased possibility of North Korean provocation,” President Yoon Suk-yeol said in a CNN interview that aired on Sunday. “Therefore, in that case, the top priority for Korea and the US-Korean alliance on the Korean Peninsula would be based on our robust defense posture. We must deal with the North Korean threat first.”

Yoon stopped short of saying that Seoul should be a higher US priority than Taipei, but he suggested that the approximately 28,500 American troops in South Korea shouldn’t be diverted to fight in Taiwan. US President Joe Biden last week said that American forces would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion, eliciting a furious response from Beijing.

China has vowed to reunify with Taiwan, by force if necessary, and tensions between Beijing and Washington over the self-governing island have escalated in recent months. US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi traveled to Taipei last month, becoming the highest-ranking American official to visit the island since 1997. Yoon chose not to meet personally with Pelosi when she stopped in Seoul on her way to Taiwan, which some observers interpreted as an effort to avoid angering China, South Korea’s largest trading partner.

Yoon told CNN that Seoul will work with Washington on “expanding freedom for the world’s citizens,” but that collaboration apparently wouldn’t include using South Korea as a base from which to fight China. That’s a departure from past conflicts, including the Vietnam War. South Korea sent 350,000 troops to Vietnam between 1964 and 1973 and had nearly 50,000 soldiers deployed in the Southeast Asian country at one point in 1969.

“For South Korea, the most imminent threat is North Korea’s nuclear missile threat,” Yoon told CNN.

Pyongyang rejected last month’s offer from Yoon to hold reunification talks. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said earlier this month that his country would never give up its nuclear weapons and recently passed a law to enshrine its right to use that arsenal preemptively if it’s under imminent threat.

Man surfs out of Russia to avoid mobilizationkek

Estonian authorities have reportedly apprehended the illegal border crosser and sent him back home

A Russian man has reportedly found a novel way to flee possible military service in the Ukraine conflict, surfing across the Narva River to Estonia. The scheme failed, though, as he was captured a few hours later and deported back to Russia.

The unidentified 38-year-old man crossed the border near the mouth of the river on a stand-up paddleboard at about 1 a.m. on Monday, according to Estonian public broadcaster ERR. Estonian border guards in Narva-Joesuu sent out several patrols, including a canine unit, and found the illegal border crosser at a bus stop around 4:30 a.m.

The man was taken to a border checkpoint for an administrative proceeding, after which he was fined and sent back to Russia. He told the Estonian authorities that he crossed over the border because of the partial military mobilization order that Russian President Vladimir Putin announced last week.

Estonia’s government has boosted border security since Russia began its military offensive against Ukraine in February. Eerik Purgel, who heads border and migration control in Estonia’s Ida Prefecture, told ERR that the country hasn’t seen an increase in migration pressure. “We are closely monitoring the situation, and if necessary, we’ll send additional forces to the border,” he said.

Narva-Joesuu sits in Estonia’s far northeastern corner, where the Narva River flows into the Gulf of Finland. Estonia stopped issuing visas to Russian tourists in August and joined with fellow Baltic states Latvia and Lithuania earlier this month in restricting entry by Russian citizens who obtained visas in other Schengen Area countries.

Pentagon woos India amid China tensions

The US aims to strengthen its military ties with New Delhi, accusing Beijing ofchallenging the “rules-based international order

(Even idiots know that means, do as i I say, not as I do!)

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin hosted a meeting on Monday at the Pentagon with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, discussing ways to deepen their bilateral defense cooperation. The officials “reaffirmed their commitment to working together as steadfast partners to advance the United States and India’s shared vision for a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific,” the Pentagon said.

The main challenge to that vision – at least as Washington sees it – is China, which has triggered territorial disputes with various nations in the South China Sea. Beijing also has vowed to reunify with Taiwan, which it sees as a breakaway province. China and the US have clashed increasingly over Taiwan in recent months, especially after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the self-governing island in August, a move that Beijing saw as undermining its sovereignty. China responded by cutting off military and climate ties with Washington and holding military exercises in the Taiwan Strait.

“Regional security is especially important right now, due to China's increasing bellicosity, especially regarding Taiwan,” Austin said. “In recent months, we have seen the PRC intensify its efforts to challenge the rules-based international order.”

Austin added that the US and India face “sustained challenges to peace, security and prosperity around the world.” He also blasted Beijing for declining to condemn and isolate Russia over the Ukraine conflict.

“China continues to support Russia – a nation also seeking to overturn the rules-based order – amid its unprovoked and cruel invasion of Ukraine,” Austin said.

However, the US also has been unable to persuade New Delhi to stop doing business with Russia. In fact, India has sharply increased oil and coal imports from Russia this year. A US State Department official told reporters last week that Washington is in “deep” talks with Indian officials over the South Asian country’s reliance on Russian energy and weaponry.

Jaishankar downplayed the Ukraine aspect of Monday’s meeting, saying, “I do share with you that the global situation has become far more challenging this year [due to] a variety of reasons, the Indo-Pacific in particular. It’s important that the stability, security and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific should be secured. That is best done amongst others by cooperation between two countries.”

Austin hosted Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh at the Pentagon in April and spoke with Singh by phone earlier this month. While both sides said the call was “productive,” Singh lodged a complaint over a recent US deal to help extend the lifespan of Pakistan’s F-16 fighter jets.
