Scientists urge top publisher to withdraw faulty climate study

Paris (AFP) – A fundamentally flawed study claiming that scientific evidence of a climate crisis is lacking should be withdrawn from the peer-reviewed journal in which it was published, top climate scientists have told AFP.

Appearing earlier this year in The European Physical Journal Plus, published by Springer Nature journal, the study purports to review data on possible changes in the frequency or intensity of rainfall, cyclones, tornadoes, droughts and other extreme weather events.

It has been viewed thousands of times on social media and cited by some mainstream media, such as Sky News Australia.

"On the basis of observation data, the climate crisis that, according to many sources, we are experiencing today, in not evident," reads the summary of the 20-page study.

Four prominent climate scientists contacted by AFP all said the study of which they had been unaware grossly manipulates data, cherry picking some facts and ignoring others that would contradict their discredited assertions."The paper gives the appearance of being specifically written to make the case that there is no climate crisis, rather than presenting an objective, comprehensive, up-to-date assessment," said Richard Betts, Head of Climate Impacts Research at Britain's Met Office.

Here's the study….

A critical assessment of extreme events trends in times of global warming

Abstract

This article reviews recent bibliography on time series of some extreme weather events and related response indicators in order to understand whether an increase in intensity and/or frequency is detectable. The most robust global changes in climate extremes are found in yearly values of heatwaves (number of days, maximum duration and cumulated heat), while global trends in heatwave intensity are not significant. Daily precipitation intensity and extreme precipitation frequency are stationary in the main part of the weather stations. Trend analysis of the time series of tropical cyclones show a substantial temporal invariance and the same is true for tornadoes in the USA. At the same time, the impact of warming on surface wind speed remains unclear. The analysis is then extended to some global response indicators of extreme meteorological events, namely natural disasters, floods, droughts, ecosystem productivity and yields of the four main crops (maize, rice, soybean and wheat). None of these response indicators show a clear positive trend of extreme events. In conclusion on the basis of observational data, the climate crisis that, according to many sources, we are experiencing today, is not evident yet. It would be nevertheless extremely important to define mitigation and adaptation strategies that take into account current trends.

>>17587723 (pb) California sheriff's office relieves 47 deputies of police duties for 'unsatisfactory' on psych evals

Found these nugget quotes buried in another article:

Alameda Sheriff's Deputy Arrested In Double Murder Failed His Psych Exam; Now 47 Other Deputies On Leave Due to Failed Exams==

A retired officer who spoke anonymously with KTVU said that the psych evaluations used to be stricter under the predecessor of Sheriff Greg Ahern, and candidates who were deemed unsuited for the job simply weren't hired. This source suggested that the reasons might have to do with mental health history, but they also could be financial issues, too many marriages and divorces in a candidate's history, or drug and alcohol issues.

And another source told KTVU that there was some corruption with these evaluations, and that Ahern "often passes his friends and family on these tests to get them hired and nixes the candidates he doesn't like." Kelly replied to a question about this saying, "I don't know about that. I hope he's not operating like that."

BTW, anyone else find the name of the website amusing?

Has anyone done a dig on Sheriff Ahern?

Alameda County is Swalwell territory…and Oakland….
