Ukraine can use Western weapons against ‘territories seized by Russia’ – US

US Secretary of State Blinken says Washington won’t recognize “annexed” regions as Russian

“We will never recognize the annexation of Ukrainian territory by Russia,” Blinken told reporters. “Ukraine has the absolute right to defend itself throughout its territory, including to take back the territory that has been illegally seized, one way or another, by Russia. And the equipment, the weapons that we and many other countries are providing, have been used very effectively to do just that.”

Russia’s “annexation” of the Donbass republics and the two regions will make zero difference to either Ukraine or the US, Blinken insisted. “The Ukrainians will continue to do what they need to do to get back the land that has been taken from them. We will continue to support them in that effort.”

GOP Rep. Jordan blasts Big Tech antitrust package, says government will 'target conservatives'

GOP Colorado Rep. Ken Buck traded barbs with Jordan over the plan.

The House of Representatives is preparing to vote on a set of bills to grant federal agencies broader authority to pursue antitrust actions against major tech firms, but Republicans are split on the issue.

Two of the bills, the Merger Filing Fee Modernization Act and the State Antitrust Enforcement Venue Act, cleared the House Judiciary Committee with bipartisan support, The Hill noted. However, committee ranking member Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio., stands as one of their most prominent critics.

In a Tuesday Tweet, the Ohio Republican asked, "Do you think we should give the Biden DOJ and FTC more money? Do you trust they won't use the money to target conservatives?" A further Tweet from the House Judiciary GOP account echoed Jordan's concerns. "Democrats want to set aside more money for the Biden FTC and DOJ to target conservatives. Do you REALLY trust they'll use that money wisely?" the Tweet read.

The legislative package will raise merger filing fees for large firms and lower them for small ones. It will further grant state attorneys broader discretion when pursuing antitrust actions, including choosing their legal venue and requiring that firms disclose foreign subsidies from U.S. adversaries, per The Hill.

GOP Colorado Rep. Ken Buck traded barbs with Jordan over the plan, touting support from Senatorial Republicans.

"This package represents a strong, bipartisan consensus approach to strengthening enforcement of the federal antitrust laws, against both Big Tech and other bad actors," wrote GOP Sens. Chuck Grassley, Iowa, Tom Cotton, Ark., and Mike Lee, Utah, of the plan, The Hill reported. "Importantly, these bills improve antitrust enforcement without appropriating any more funds to President Biden's out-of-control FTC. We call on all of our colleagues in the House of Representatives to strongly support this package."

The intra-party tension over the package comes after the Senate Judiciary Committee last week advanced a separate anti-Big Tech bill that would allow media outlets to form cartels to negotiate with major platforms for a temporary period. That plan, too, sparked an intra-party debate. Despite 11 Senate Republicans voting to advance the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act out of committee, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy derided the bill as "the antithesis of conservatism" and encouraged his colleagues to oppose the measure.

CDC walks back COVID guidance again, finds lasting post-vaccine heart problems in young adults

Ivy League-affiliated hospital hides myocarditis ad for kids following criticism that it's trying to "normalize" vaccine-induced condition. Cardiologist explains how father's inexplicable death led him to question COVID vaccines.

The CDC continues to erase distinctions by COVID-19 vaccination status in public health guidance as ongoing global research — including its own — documents the mediocre performance of COVID vaccines and their unexpectedly high rates of lasting harm in some groups.

Vaccination status is no longer used "to inform source control, screening testing, or post-exposure recommendations" for healthcare personnel, the Friday update to their CDC guidance says.

The agency "[c]larified" that healthcare facilities, including nursing homes, have discretion on whether to screen-test asymptomatic personnel. It also now says asymptomatic patients "in general" do not require "empiric use of Transmission-Based Precautions" after exposure to an infected person.

A CDC study of 12-29 year-olds with heart inflammation following mRNA vaccination, published last week in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health, found that 1 in 6 still had not "fully recovered" at least 90 days after myocarditis onset, including 1 in 100 who hadn't improved at all.

Myocarditis has increased so markedly among youth since vaccines were authorized for them that an Ivy League-affiliated hospital started running TV ads this month for its treatment in children. New York-Presbyterian marked the ad's Sept. 6 YouTube video private less than two weeks later, following criticism that it was trying to "normalize" a vaccine-induced condition.

The CDC's COVID-19 Response Team found more than 800 myocarditis reports to the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System from Jan. 12 to Nov. 5, 2021 that matched the parameters for age and time since onset.

Excluding those without phone numbers or who couldn't be reached, they studied 393 individuals whose healthcare providers, mostly cardiologists, completed a survey. The median age was 17 and overwhelmingly male. The team deemed four in five patients "fully or probably fully" recovered (320).

But two-thirds of those initially required non-intensive care hospitalization, and 27% required intensive care. At their last provider followup, 28% of the fully recovered were still on doctor-ordered physical activity restrictions.

The figures for the 65 patients who were not fully recovered: 62% non-intensive hospitalization and 18% intensive, and 48% still on physical activity restrictions. Less than a third had been cleared for physical activity, half the figure for the fully recovered, who had a median clearance of 10 fewer days (104).

University of California San Francisco epidemiologist Vinay Prasad, a critic of the New York-Presbyterian myocarditis ad, was shocked by the CDC researchers' rosy portrayal of the findings. "What kind of 'full recovery' is it if I can't go for a run or a jog and I'm a 24-year-old man?" he asked in a 23-minute video analysis.

Prasad noted one patient required extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, which is "as serious as it gets," and more than 100 were prescribed medication such as beta blockers and ACE inhibitors at their last followup, including half of the not-fully-recovered patients.

"This cannot be attributed to any underlying anxiety or mental health issue," but only "the direct effect of the vaccine on the heart muscle," he said.

Gerry Harvey takes aim at politicians, labels parliament a ‘disaster waiting to happen’

The billionaire boss of Harvey Norman has ripped Australian politics, claiming China’s take-no-prisoners approach is the “best way” to get things done.

There’s some laughter from Australian billionaire Gerry Harvey when he suggests that China’s one-party led dictatorship is a model Australia should aspire to if it wants to get things done.

But there’s more than a hint of sincerity.

Mr Harvey, who turned 83 last week, says the “best” political system to “get something done” is the Chinese system.

“If you want to get something done, the best system is the Chinese one,” he told news.com.au.

“You just do it. You’ve got a government that’s in total control and they don’t give a f**k what the people say.”

Mr Harvey made the comments while lamenting the direction of Australia’s democracy – specifically the historic move away from the two major parties and the rise of the so-called “teal” independents.

Six sitting Liberal MPs were among those turfed out at the 2022 federal election to make way for the likes of Allegra Spender in Wentworth, Kylea Tink in North Sydney, Monique Ryan in Kooyong and Zoe Daniel in Goldstein.

FBI Whistleblower Comes Forward, Says Bureau Violating Policies in Jan. 6 Investigation

An FBI whistleblower has come forward to say the bureau is violating policies in its investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol breach.

The whistleblower raising concerns about how the bureau is handling the Jan. 6 investigation has identified himself as special agent Steve Friend.

Friend, based out of Florida since June 2021, said in a declaration made public on Sept. 26 that he was told that child sexual abuse material investigations were “no longer an FBI priority” and should be referred to local officials. He says he was also told that he would be focusing on domestic terrorism investigations.

Friend says he observed that FBI policies on case assignments were being violated because the Washington Field Office was enabling field offices around the country to lead investigations on crimes that allegedly took place in Washington on or around Jan. 6, but officials in Washington are actually directing the probes.

The situation resulted in active criminal investigations in which Friend is listed as the case agent, but has done no investigative work, according to the declaration.

Friend brought concerns to supervisors, including telling special agent Greg Federico that it was inappropriate to use FBI SWAT teams to arrest suspects who were only facing misdemeanor charges. Federico allegedly said the search warrants being served by the teams were lawful and advised Friend to speak to the FBI employee assistance program to deal with stress.

Federico forwarded the issue to supervisors, with whom Friend reiterated concerns about policy violations. He brought up the kidnapping case involving Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, which ended with several defendants being acquitted because of the heavy involvement of FBI agents and confidential sources. One of the supervisors falsely said that police officers were killed on Jan. 6, and said that Friend was being “a bad teammate,” according to the declaration.

Friend refused to participate in future operations relating to the Jan. 6 investigation. His security clearance was suspended pending an investigation, and he was stripped of his credentials, firearm, and badge.

Friend is still employed by the FBI but remains suspended without pay, Daniel Meyer, one of his lawyers, told The Epoch Times via email.

White House Dodges on Biden Not Talking to DeSantis Ahead of Hurricane Ian Landfall

The White House dodged questions on whether President Joe Biden has spoken with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis ahead of Hurricane Ian’s impending landfall.

“In the past, President Biden has made calls to [Republican] governors in situations like natural disasters, [such as] Kay Ivey in Alabama, Asa Hutchinson in Arkansas or the governor in Texas,” a reporter asked FEMA chief Deanne Criswell on Tuesday who was standing alongside White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. “Can you articulate how these determinations are made and why it hasn’t been made in this case to have the president call the governor?”

In response, Criswell did not say whether Biden, a Democrat, has spoken with DeSantis, a Republican ahead of Ian’s landfall. The FEMA head said that she has spoken with DeSantis and her team is in contact constantly with the governor.

“The president is very focused on making sure the federal family has the right resources to support this,” Criswell told reporters. “That is why I contacted the governor right away, and we have a team of my senior leadership embedded with the governor to make sure that we’re supporting that.”

Criswell said the “focus today” will be “making sure that we have the right measures in place to support the lifesaving activities that need to happen.”

“Again, we have a strong team that’s in place supporting the governor right now,” Criswell also said in response to another question about whether Biden has spoken to DeSantis.

Talking to Mayors

During another event Tuesday, Biden told reporters that he spoke with the mayors of Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater, to contact him directly for aid. Those cities are in the path of Hurricane Ian.

“Forecast can change, but for now the experts say this could be a very severe hurricane, life-threatening and a devastating impact,” Biden said at the White House. “The administration is on alert and in action to help the people of Florida,” he added.

Biden added he “told each one of them in my conversations separately, whatever they need—I mean it sincerely whatever they need … contact me directly. They know how [to] do that.”

Ian is expected to strengthen further on Tuesday after cutting a swath through Cuba’s farm country west of the capital Havana and emerging over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico, reaching Category 4 strength before it approaches the west coast of Florida, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

The storm surge could cause devastating to catastrophic damage with some locations potentially uninhabitable for weeks or months, the service warned, urging residents to move to safe shelter before the storm’s arrival.
