EU states criticize Ukrainian ‘welfare tourism’

German and Polish politicians have pointed out cases of social benefits system abuse

German opposition leader Friedrich Merz found himself under fire on Tuesday for pointing out that some Ukrainians who sought shelter in his country keep going home and back while accepting welfare benefits. Though Merz has apologized, the mayor of Przemysl in Poland – who said much the same thing on Monday – has not.

“We are now experiencing welfare tourism from these refugees: to Germany, back to Ukraine, to Germany, back to Ukraine,”Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader Merz told Bild TV on Monday.

His comments drew a flurry of condemnations from the ruling coalition, according to state broadcaster Deutsche Welle. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser of the Social Democratic Party accused Merz of using “Ukrainian women and children” to make a political point, while the parliamentary leader of the Free Democrats Christian Duerr said Merz’s words were “absolutely out of place.”

Faced with such an onslaught, Merz backed down. “I regret the use of the word ‘welfare tourism’. That was an inaccurate description of a problem observed in individual cases,” he tweeted on Tuesday. “Far be it from me to criticize refugees from Ukraine, who are facing a hard fate.”

While Germany has taken in almost a million refugees from Ukraine, Poland is dealing with more than four times that number. Wojciech Bakun is the mayor of Przemysl, a city of some 60,000 right on the Ukrainian border. On Monday, he wrote on Facebook that some Ukrainian refugees were engaged in an “organized system of extorting social benefits.”

“It is impossible not to notice the organized transports of women with children, who have cards with written instructions on the procedures they have to undergo in order to receive material and financial assistance,”Bakun said, describing how they line up outside the government offices every day to get benefits, “then, in an organized transport, they return to Ukraine.”

Many Ukrainian refugees also leave Poland for almost 30 days but then return before that deadline in order to keep their status, according to local outlet Kresy.

Poland has no instruments to prevent this behavior, Bakun complained, and wondered why Warsaw hasn’t yet noticed the problem of “draining the Polish social assistance system.”

NATO convenes special supply meeting

US-led bloc pushes military industry to replenish stocks depleted in Ukraine

Heads of NATO weapons industries were summoned to Brussels on Tuesday by Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to discuss ways to replenish stockpiles of weapons and ammunition the US-led bloc has sent to Ukraine. Stoltenberg urged the military-industrial complex to speed up production amid reports the West was running short on key supplies.

The meeting of the Conference of National Armaments Directors (CNAD) focused on the bloc’s “capabilities and munitions stockpiles” in light of the conflict in Ukraine, according to NATO.

“Enhancing NATO stockpiles will ensure we can keep supporting Ukraine,” Stoltenberg said. “We need to keep working together as NATO Allies and with industry to replenish our munitions stocks and provide Ukraine with the support it needs, for as long as Ukraine needs it.”

NATO has sent massive amounts of weapons, ammunition, vehicles and other equipment to Kiev since February, with most of the supplies coming from the US. By the Pentagon’s own admission, the US has sent more than $14.5 billion worth of “security assistance” to Ukraine since the escalation of hostilities, on top of over $17.2 billion since the US-backed coup in 2014.

TheUS is currently preparing another weapons package for Kiev, valued at $1.1 billion, Reuters reported on Tuesday citing anonymous US officials.

All of these deliveries have put a dent into the US weapons and ammunition stockpile, however. Earlier this month, the Pentagon announced a $311 million contract for some 1,800 Javelin anti-tank missiles. Another $624 million was allocated in May for replenishing the stock of Stinger anti-aircraft missiles.

Stockpiles of 155mm artillery ammunition were “uncomfortably low,” the Wall Street Journal reported at the end of August. Delivering the orders currently takes anywhere from 13 to 18 months, the Journal reported. Meanwhile, the Telegraph reported that the British military industry could take up to two years to restart production on older weapons, while designing and delivering a new missile may take as long as ten.

The US think-tank Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) has pointed outthat the American military is “not structured to fight or support an extended conflict,” while the defense defense industry is “sized for peacetime production rates” and expanding capabilities would take years.

Ukraine threatens Russian reservists

President Vladimir Zelensky’s chief of staff has told mobilized troops to surrender or be killed

The chief of staff of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has told Russian troops to surrender if they want “a chance to live,”claiming they will otherwise be killed.

Andrey Yermak made the threat on Tuesday to reservists who are entering military service under the partial mobilization announced last week in Russia.

“Mobilized Russians who surrender will have a chance to keep their lives. The rest of them will not,” he tweeted.

Other senior Ukrainian officials have made similar statements since Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the military draft last Wednesday. Zelensky himself urged mobilized Russians to “protest, fight, run or surrender,”claiming that those were the options for them “to survive.”

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said on Wednesday that the mobilization would see some 300,000 reservists called to arms. He explained that additional troops were required to control Russian-held areas and the 1,000km contact line with Ukrainian forces.

Russia has amended its criminal code, making voluntary surrender during wartime a serious felony. People found guilty of the crime face up to ten years in prison under the new legislation, which was signed into law by President Putin last Saturday.

The largest exchange of POWs between Russia and Ukraine, which was mediated by Türkiye, took place last week. Among the Ukrainian troops that Moscow agreed to set free were dozens of members of the neo-Nazi Azov regiment.

Crimea head discloses future of ‘special military operation’

Donbass republics joining Russia will mark a “point of no return,” said Sergey Aksyonov

Russia will soon transition from conducting a “special military operation” to a de-facto anti-terrorist operation to defend its own territory, the head of the Republic of Crimea, Sergey Aksyonov, said on Monday. Anticipating the results of the vote in Donbass republics Kherson and Zaporozhye, Aksyonov said this would lead to greater clarity and determination.

The People’s Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, as well as the two Ukrainian regions mostly under control of Russian and allied forces, have been voting since Friday on the question of joining Russia – much as Crimea did in March 2014, following the US-backed coup in Kiev.

Aksyonov noted that theCrimean vote was “held according to all international laws without a single flaw, but practically no one recognized it,” adding that this was no time to be distracted with questions of “legal purity.”

“Soon we will pass a certain point of no return. A new status for the liberated territories will put an end to uncertainty,” the Crimean governor said. “They will become full-fledged subjects of the Russian Federation, and we will de facto stop conducting a special military operation andstart a counter-terrorist operation on our own territory.”

The government in Kiev maintains that the vote will change nothing, and President Vladimir Zelensky has vowed to continue the war until the “liberation” of all “occupied territories” – including Crimea – with Western help.

US President Joe Biden on Friday denounced the vote as a “sham” referendum intended to “annex parts of Ukraine by force in flagrant violation of international law,” and said Washington and its allies would impose “severe economic costs” on Russia in retaliation.

Aksyonov was elected prime minister of Crimea in late February 2014, just days after Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich was violently overthrown by US-backed militants. He oversaw the referendum in which the vast majority of Crimeans voted to join Russia. Aksyonov’s own son was among the 300,000 Russian reservists called up last week by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Illegal Alien Convicted for Deadly 2007 Las Vegas Bombing Escapes Prison

An illegal alien who was serving life in prison for the deadly Las Vegas bombing in 2007 has escaped from the Southern Desert Correctional Center.

Porfirio Duarte-Herrera, 42, was discovered to be missing during the morning head count on Tuesday.

However, Gov. Steve Sisolak said in a statement obtained by the Las Vegas Sun that “his office later learned that upon further investigation by the NDOC the inmate has been missing since early in the weekend.”

“This is unacceptable,” the governor’s statement continued. “This kind of security lapse cannot be permitted and those responsible will be held accountable.”

Duarte-Herrera and his accomplice, Omar Rueda-Denvers, were convicted of first-degree murder in 2009 for the death of Willebaldo Dorantes Antonio. He was sentenced to life in prison.

The bomb was planted in the Luxor parking garage near where Dorantes Antonio had a hot dog stand. The bomb had a motion activated trigger and was placed on Dorantes Antonio’s car in a styrofoam cup.

Prosecutors said that Duarte-Herrera built and exploded the pipe bomb as an act of revenge because the victim was dating his ex-girlfriend.

“Dorantes Antonio’s girlfriend, Caren Chali, was near the explosion but was not hurt, authorities said. Prosecutors said at trial that Chali was Rueda-Denvers’ ex-girlfriend, and he wanted revenge on her and her new boyfriend,” the Sun report explains.

The White House Brings In Al ‘Poopy Pants’ Roker To Lecture Staffers About Climate Change

Longtime weatherman and television personality Al Roker revealed Tuesday that he is speaking at a White House climate change event with the hope of influencing the Biden administration’s approach to climate policy.

Roker told NBC’s “Today” that he is currently in Washington, D.C., to speak to the White House’s sustainability and climate change units about the importance of climate policy. Roker said that while the Biden team knows climate change is important, it’s also important for policymakers to get the perspective of people like himself who report on the issue.

Notably, Roker is a weatherman, not a meteorologist. He holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from the State University of New York at Oswego, which he attained in 1976, and no post-graduate degrees. He first became a weather presenter for a local CBS affiliate in 1974 and was hired by NBC’s national flagship in 1983.

The trip won’t be Roker’s first to the White House. In 2013, Roker revealed that he had previously pooped his pants during a trip to the White House in 2002 after undergoing gastric bypass surgery.

“I think it’s important for everybody to keep having a conversation, a dialogue about what’s happening,” Roker said Tuesday. “These are policymakers, but folks like us have to report on it to folks that are viewers, so it’s a great thing to have a dialogue so that we all know what each one is thinking about, so that we can go forward and hopefully help mitigate what we’re seeing with this climate crisis.

Roker added that he needed to share “what we feel is important that our friends in government need to know about all this.”

The iconic TV host’s other experience includes hosting coverage of the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, hosting Celebrity Family Feud and co-authoring several murder mystery novels.
