#OTD in 1942, cargo ship USS Alhena (AK-26) was hit by a torpedo from the Japanese submarine I-4. The crew quickly got the fires under control and then used sheets of plywood to construct temporary bulkheads. The Alhena was repaired and back in service 8 months later.
