Nord Stream pipeline blasts were likely from explosions, not earthquakes, seismologist says

European officials believe the explosions were a deliberate act of sabotage

Seismic activity detected at the site of the Nord Stream pipelines gas leaks in the Baltic Sea was caused by explosions โ€“ not earthquakes or landslides, a Swedish seismologist said Tuesday.

Bjorn Lund, director of the Swedish National Seismic Network, said he and his colleagues gathered seismic data showing that explosions took place in the water and not in the rock under the seabed.

The explosions rattled the Baltic Sea before unusual leaks were discovered on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines running underwater from Russia to Germany.

Lund said the first explosion was recorded early Monday southeast of the Danish Island of Bornholm. A second, stronger blast northeast of the island that night was equivalent to a magnitude-2.3 earthquake.

Seismic stations in Denmark, Norway, and Finland also registered the explosions.

"There's no doubt, this is not an earthquake," Lund said.

Multiple European officials have pointed to possible sabotage amid an energy standoff with Russia provoked by the war in Ukraine.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said her government regarded the leaks as the results of "deliberate actions" by unknown perpetrators.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, meanwhile, called the events "an act of sabotage," one that "probably means the next step of escalation in the situation that we are dealing with in Ukraine."

@KimDotcom

Why were US Blackhawk helicopters circling over the explosion sites of the Nord Stream pipelines several times in September? They hovered over the incident sites for hours on the night of Sept 22 and 25.

US military aircraft circled Nord Stream incident site in September

The US military reportedly carried out sorties over the future site of the Nord Stream pipeline "incident" in the Baltic Sea.

US military helicopters habitually and on numerous occasions circled for hours over the site of the Nord Stream pipelines incident near Bornholm Island earlier in September, Flightradar24 data showed.

Earlier this month, a US Navy Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk helicopter spent hours loitering over the location of the damaged natural gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea near Bornholm for several days in a row, September 1, 2, and 3, in particular.

Denmark's maritime traffic agency and Sweden's Maritime Authority on Monday reported a "dangerous" gas leak in the Baltic Sea close to the route of the inactive Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which experienced an unexplained drop in pressure.

The leak, southeast of the Danish island of Bornholm, "is dangerous for maritime traffic" and "navigation is prohibited within a five nautical mile radius of the reported position," the agency warned in a notice to ships.

Following the incident, German newspaper Tagesspiegel claimed Monday that Berlin is convinced that the loss of pressure in the three natural gas pipelines between Russia and Germany was not a coincidence and suspects a "targeted attack".

The cause of the incidents remains unknown and an investigation is underway. Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde said on Tuesday that the disruption was caused by detonations, which indicates that it was sabotage.

The Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which runs parallel to Nord Stream 1 and was intended to double the capacity for undersea gas imports from Russia, was blocked by Berlin in the days before the start of the war in Ukraine.

Flightradar24 showed an unidentified aircraft that did not even have a helicopter icon hovering over the site. However, the aircraft's 24-bit ICAO code included in the description makes it possible to establish the model, which is the US military's Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk. The code is verified through open resources that collect data on military aircraft.

The US helicopter is also shown by the aircraft tracking service to have flown into the area of loitering over the Nord Stream pipelines from Gdansk, Poland.

On the second day of the loitering, almost in parallel with their US counterpart, a Dutch navy NH9 helicopter was flying in the vicinity of Bornholm Island, and it is expected to have been observing the Americans' activity.

US helicopters also took flights over other Nord Stream pipelines on September 10 and 19 and others stayed over the incident site for hours on the night of September 22 and September 25.

Reportedly, helicopters that made sorties on the night of September 22-23 and 25-26 have especially confusing tracks.

These revelations come after German newspaper Der Siegel reported Tuesday that the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) warned the German government there would be attacks on Nord Stream gas pipelines weeks ahead of any incident being reported around the pipelines.

An informed source told the German magazine that Berlin had been told by the CIA a few weeks ago that there would be attacks on the key pipelines supplying a huge portion of Europe's energy from Russia.

Nord Stream: Who We Are

Nord Stream AG, based in Zug, Switzerland, is an international consortium of five major companies established in 2005 for the planning, construction and subsequent operation of two 1,224-kilometre natural gas pipelines through the Baltic Sea.

The five shareholders of the Nord Stream consortium are Gazprom international projects LLC (PJSC Gazprom subsidiary), Wintershall Dea AG (formerly Wintershall Holding GmbH), PEG Infrastruktur AG (E.ON), N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie and ENGIE. Gazprom international projects LLC holds a 51 percent stake in the pipeline project.

Leading German energy companies Wintershall Dea AG and PEGI/E.ON hold 15.5 percent each, and the Dutch natural gas infrastructure company N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie, along with the leading French energy provider ENGIE, each hold a 9 percent stake. The combined experience of these companies ensures the best technology, safety and corporate governance for the Nord Stream project, which aims to provide a secure energy supply for Europe.

The twin pipelines, which have been operational since 2011 and 2012 respectively, have the capacity to transport a combined total of about 55 bcm of gas a year โ€“ that's enough to satisfy the energy demand of more than 26 million European households. Nord Stream has designed the pipelines to operate for at least 50 years.

Total investment in the pipeline system was 7.4 billion euros. This financing stemmed partly from Nord Stream's shareholders, which provided 30 percent of the project costs through equity contributions proportionate to their shares in the joint venture. Some 70 percent was financed externally by means of project financing from banks and export credit agencies.

Fourth Nord Stream leak spotted, NATO sees 'sabotage'

Swedish authorities have said a fourth leak was detected on undersea pipelines linking Russia to Europe following what NATO described as an act of sabotage.

The Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines have been at the centre of geopolitical tensions as Russia cut gas supplies to Europe in suspected retaliation against Western sanctions following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

The Swedish Coast Guard confirmed today there were four leaks in total on the pipeline in the Baltic Sea โ€“ two on the Swedish side and two on the Danish side. Three leaks were previously reported.

NATO declared that the damage was "the result of deliberate, reckless and irresponsible acts of sabotage" and said it supported investigations to determine the origin of the damage.

The Western alliance warned that it was "committed to prepare for, deter and defend against the coercive use of energy and other hybrid tactics".

"Any deliberate attack against Allies' critical infrastructure would be met with a united and determined response," it said, adding that the leaks present risks to shipping and cause substantial environmental damage.

Russia, which has denied it was behind the explosions, said a foreign state was likely responsible for what it described as a "terrorist act".

Here, the Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney said that the undersea pipelines had been breached "clearly by deliberate acts of sabotage".

Speaking to RTร‰'s Six One, Mr Coveney said: "I think the view is that this could only had been done by a country as opposed to anybody and so, obviously, there's an investigation under way now to actually find out how this happened and ultimately, to try and establish who is responsible and I don't think we should draw conclusions until that work is done.

"But I think this is an attempt to frighten everybody in terms of international infrastructure, and I think we need to be wise and careful not to respond to that with any panic, but clearly every country in the European Union will be aware of vital infrastructure for their economies and their countries and Ireland is no different and we have a responsibility of course to monitor our own sovereign territory."

Russia's security service launched an "international terrorism" investigation into the gas leaks, saying the damage had caused "significant economic damage to the Russian Federation".

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that such a probe "required the cooperation of several countries", but that there was an "unwillingness" from many countries to contact Russia.

Russia said yesterday that Washington should answer if it was behind the leaks - an assertion rejected by the United States as "ridiculous".

The UN Security Council will meet tomorrow to discuss the matter.

Finland, which borders Russia, decided to reinforce security around its critical infrastructures, with particular focus on the electricity network.

Sweden's two main nuclear power plants stepped up their alert levels.

'Constant' gas flow

Operated by a consortium majority-owned by Russian gas giant Gazprom, Nord Stream 1 and 2 run from Russia to Germany.

While the pipelines are not currently in operation, they both still contained gas.

The vast leaks have caused underwater gas plumes, with significant bubbling at the surface of the sea several hundred metres wide, making it impossible to immediately inspect the structures.

Seismic institutes on Tuesday reported they had recorded "in all likelihood" explosions in the area, prior to the leaks being detected.

A Swedish Coast Guard search and rescue vessel was patrolling the area.

"The crew reports that the flow of gas visible on the surface is constant," the agency said in a statement.

Danish authorities said the leaks will continue until the gas in the pipelines is exhausted, which is expected to occur on Sunday.

Fatih Birol, executive director of the International Energy Agency, said at a symposium in Paris that to him it was "very obvious" who was behind the leaks.

He said natural gas shortages in the wake of the war in Ukraine could make for a tough winter in Europe.

"In the absence of a major negative surprise, I think Europe, in terms of natural gas, can survive this winter with a lot of bruises in our bodies in terms of prices, economy and social issues, but we can go through that," Birol said.

According to climate groups, Nord Stream 1 and 2 contained some 350,000 tonnes of natural gas - methane.

Greenpeace says the leaks could have the effect of almost 30 million tonnes of CO2, or more than two-thirds of the annual emissions of Denmark.

Russian President Vladimir Putin says US and allies blew up Nord Stream pipelines

A sharp drop in pressure on both pipelines was registered on September 26 and seismologists detected explosions, triggering a wave of speculation about who might have sabotaged one of Russia's most important energy corridors.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday directly accused the United States and its allies of blowing up the Nord Stream pipelines.

โ€œThe sanctions were not enough for the Anglo-Saxons: they moved onto sabotage,โ€ Putin said. โ€œIt is hard to believe but it is a fact that they organised the blasts on the Nord Stream international gas pipelines.โ€

โ€œThey began to destroy the pan-European energy infrastructure,โ€ Putin said. โ€œIt is clear to everyone who benefits from this. Of course, he who benefits did it.โ€

A sharp drop in pressure on both pipelines was registered on September 26 and seismologists detected explosions, triggering a wave of speculation about who might have sabotaged one of Russiaโ€™s most important energy corridors.

The European Union said it suspected sabotage caused the damage to the Gazprom-led Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in Swedish and Danish waters. The White House has dismissed Russian allegations it was behind the incidents.

Russiaโ€™s top spy said that Moscow had intelligence indicating that the West was behind what he said was a โ€œterrorist actโ€ against the pipelines.
