‘Not wise’ to let Ukraine join NATO – Kissinger

Russia regarded its sphere of influence in Eastern Europe as a “safety belt,” the former US secretary of state said

Washington’s attempts to incorporate Ukraine into NATO after the collapse of the Soviet Union were not prudent, former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said on Friday.

Speaking to the Council on Foreign Relations, a non-partisan US think tank, the 99-year-old veteran diplomat argued that Washington tried to indiscriminately include all former members of the Soviet bloc under its umbrella after the Berlin wall fell, and that the “whole region between the center of Europe and Russian border became open to restructure.”

“From the Russian point of view, the United States then attempted to integrate this whole region, without exception, into an American-led strategic system,” he said, adding that this development basically removed Russia’s historic “safety belt.”

Kissinger thus stressed that “it was not a wise American policy to attempt to include Ukraine into NATO.”

He does not believe, however, that this justifies attempts by Russian President Vladimir Putin to re-incorporate Ukraine into Moscow’s sphere of influence by a “surprise attack.”

Kissinger said he does not know if it is possible to make peace with the Russian leader, but stressed that the West “must seek an opportunity for an arrangement that guarantees Ukrainian freedom” and keeps the country part of the European system.

Moreover, Kissinger opined that in a way, Russia has “already lost the war” because its capacity to threaten Europe with conventional attacks, which it had enjoyed for decades or even centuries, “has now been demonstrably overcome.”

Despite that, the former secretary of state signaled that sooner or later, the West and Russia must engage in dialogue. “Some dialogue, maybe on an unofficial level, maybe in an exploratory way is very important,” he reiterated, adding that “in the nuclear environment” such an outcome is preferable to a “battlefield decision.”

In early August, Kissinger warned that the US had found itself “at the edge of war with Russia and China on issues which we partly created,” arguing that Washington has rejected traditional diplomacy, as it has been “seeking to convert or condemn their interlocutors rather than to penetrate their thinking.”

Gunnigle was asked in an interview what she thought about prosecutors shielding illegal immigrants from deportation.

Interviewer Meg O’Connor inquired, “Should prosecutors consider collateral immigration consequences in charging decisions, plea offers, and sentencing recommendations, and what effects should those considerations have?”

“When prosecutors make plea offers and argue for sentences, they do so within the interests of justice, and the interests of justice should be an individualized determination that is driven by all of the issues that are happening in someone’s life, up to and including immigration status,” Gunnigle responded.

Gunnigle has also stated, “I have adopted the American Immigration Attorney Council’s statement that there are ways to make plea offers as immigration-neutral as possible.”

FBI Agents Improperly Saw Privileged Trump Communications: Lawyers

The FBI team that seized documents from former President Donald Trump’s Florida resort improperly viewed communications between Trump and an attorney, violating attorney-client privilege for a third time, lawyers for Trump said in a new filing.

The filter process set up by the government to try to prevent FBI agents from viewing privileged materials has already failed twice, the government has acknowledged. On Sept. 26, government officials informed Trump lawyers of a third failure, the lawyers said in a new filing lodged in a federal court in southern Florida.

FBI agents viewed an email that they sent to the Privilege Review Team, a team that was supposed to filter out all potentially privileged materials before agents were able to view any.

The review team has characterized the email as non-privileged, but Trump disagrees.

“Plaintiff believes the email falls squarely into the category of attorney-client privileged,” Trump lawyers told U.S. District Judge Raymond Dearie, a Reagan appointee who is serving as a special master in the case.

Benjamin Hawk, the Department of Justice (DOJ) official in charge of the filter team, claimed during a recent hearing that the first two failures to separate potentially privileged materials were examples of the filter process working, but U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, the Trump appointee who inserted Dearie into the case, expressed doubt.

The instances “indicate that, on more than one occasion, the Privilege Review Team’s initial screening failed to identify potentially privileged material,” she said.

FBI agents who viewed the potentially privileged materials may still be working on the case, according to a sealed filing described by Cannon.

Names and Deadlines

In the new filing, Trump’s lawyers said they want the names of all government officials who were exposed to the potentially privileged materials.

“The unilaterally imposed filter team, which made no effort to contact Plaintiff’s counsel throughout its review process, has admitted to three breaches so far,” the lawyers said. “All this before review by the Special Master and the Plaintiff. By way of this filing, Plaintiff is asking the Special Master to order disclosure of the names of each attorney and Special Agent who was exposed to materials eventually provided to the Privilege Review Team.”

Gov't Directing Children to Online Chats to Talk to Anonymous Adults About Sex Without Parental Consent

The state is guiding children via the taxpayer-funded website to talk online with anonymous adults about sex, all without their parent's consent.

The Arizona Department of Education (ADE) was put on notice this month that they are being sued for directing children — via the state ADE website — to chat rooms in which they can discuss sex, gender, and anything else — without their parents knowing.

The lawsuit, spearheaded by parent Peggy McClain, specifically names Kathy Hoffman, Arizona’s Superintendent of Public Instruction, who made the decision to direct children to the Q Chat website, using the taxpayer-funded ADE website.

Once on the Q Chat website, children, 13 years of age and older, are required to give their personal information to join the chats, including their age, location and romantic interests. According to Q Chat, the groups are run by "facilitators" who "guide group conversations and help if anything comes up."

These "facilitators," according to Q Chat, are "staff and volunteers from youth programs at LGBTQ+ centers across the United States" and are not required to be licensed in any of the topics they discuss with children. When children join a session, it unfolds as detailed below:

A facilitator will greet you when you arrive in the chat. There will be some time to informally meet others who are joining the chat. After introductions and a review of the group agreements, there will be open discussion on a designated topic. You are free to share as much or as little as you like. At the end, there will be a closing and some time to chat more informally.

A place for LGBTQ+ children to have discussions with like-minded folks is not at all sinister and children should be able to have these conversations freely. That being said, as AZ Free News points out, some of the upcoming chat rooms are: “Sex and Relationships Q&A,” “FOR TRANS/NON-BINARY YOUTH: Activism and Allyship,” and “FOR TRANS/NONBINARY YOUTH: Sex Ed.”

While children should certainly have a space to talk about subjects that interest them, including anything related to the LGBTQ+ arena, the idea of anonymous adults chatting with children about these sensitive topics is rather worrisome. Moreover, the fact that it is done so behind their parents' backs and is being facilitated by the state, is even worse.

At the bottom of every page on the Q Chat site is an "escape" button which quickly redirects all users to Google.com. According to former Superintendent of Public Instruction and Arizona Attorney General, Tom Horne, this makes the site illegal as it violates the Arizona statute prohibiting government agencies from encouraging children to hide information from their parents. Horne says the escape button is designed to do just that.

Again, no one here is saying that children should be disallowed from having these consensual conversations. That being said, however, facilitating a process that explicitly allows children to hide it from their parents is not the way to go about it. When anonymous adults are then granted access to these children, the stakes are even higher and an entire door for child predation is opened.

Remove the entire LGBTQ+ label and this scenario is just as disturbing if it were marketed to straight kids. Parents would likely be just as uncomfortable with their children chatting anonymously online — without their consent — with straight anonymous adults having conversations about sex with their 13-year-old.

White House expected to publish privacy-focused executive order next week

The White House is expected to publish an executive order on international data transfers next week, reports Politico. The order is designed to “address European concerns over surveillance practices in the United States,” Politico explains.

Since 2016, the European Union and the U.S. have operated under what is known as the Privacy Shield agreement. The agreement is intended to give companies in the United States and in Europe the ability to “comply with data protection requirements when transferring personal data from the European Union and Switzerland to the United States in support of transatlantic commerce.” In July 2020, the EU's top court struck down the Privacy Shield agreement over fears that European data was not safe from access by American agencies.

Politico reports that the executive order will include new legal protections for both European and American citizens regarding how U.S. national security agencies can access and use their data.

Peter Swire, a former Clinton administration chief counselor for privacy and current professor at Georgia Tech, believes the U.S. Department of Justice will create an independent court to address U.S. national security agencies’ ability to access European data. “Step one is independent adjudication with the Department of Justice, step two is the executive order requiring intelligence agencies to follow the decisions of those judges,” Swire told Politico.

Experts also believe that the executive order will not fully resolve issues related to the privacy Shield agreement. “Signing the executive order doesn't mean that we will immediately have an adequacy decision for the Privacy Shield that would legitimize transfers of personal data from the EU,” said Dr. Gabriela Zanfir-Fortuna, vice-president of global policy at Future of Privacy Forum, a Washington, DC-based think tank and data privacy advocacy group. “The process is still long and it will require several months for the European Commission to adopt an adequacy decision,” Zanfir-Fortuna added.

Kirk Nahra, a privacy attorney and co-chair of the cybersecurity and privacy practice at international law firm WilmerHale, agrees that hurdles remain in the EU. “We expect that any new program will both need to be approved by the EU and then will be challenged [in court] even if approved,” said Nahra.

FDA Withholding COVID-19 Vaccine Safety Data is Illegal: Lawmakers

Rep. Gregory Steube (R-Fla.) and other U.S. lawmakers are asserting that the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) refusal to provide records to The Epoch Times is illegal.

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) states that, with exceptions, agencies that receive satisfactory records requests “shall make the records promptly available” to the requester. But the FDA recently refused to provide results of COVID-19 vaccine safety monitoring analysis to The Epoch Times, claiming that it could not separate the results from inter-agency and intra-agency communications, which are allowed to be withheld.

Steube and colleagues told FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf, a Biden appointee, that they were concerned after reading the story about the refusal to provide the records, telling Califf that his agency “is obligated to disclose” the materials under FOIA.

The requested analysis was performed on reports to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). Anybody can submit reports to VAERS, but most reports are submitted by health care workers, who are required to report adverse events following COVID-19 vaccination.

“It is unacceptable that the FDA would withhold such important material from the public eye. Americans depend on the information provided in VAERS to be able to make conscious decisions about their health and well-being,” the lawmakers told Califf in a letter dated Sept. 23. “It is critical that the FDA be transparent and release important sets of data to the public.”

They described the FDA as being “noncompliant” in releasing COVID-19 vaccine safety data, referring to how the FDA denied a request to quickly produce all the data and information for Pfizer’s vaccine. The agency later said it would take 75 years to produce the information, but a judge ordered the agency to take no longer than eight months.

The FDA did not respond to a request for comment on the letter. The agency previously declined to comment on the decision not to provide the records, citing how The Epoch Times has appealed the decision.

It’s not clear why the agency cannot comment while an appeal is pending.

The lawmakers asked the agency for answers within 30 days.

Reps. Michael Cloud (R-Texas) and Tom Tiffany (R-Wis.) also signed the letter.

After the letter was sent, the FDA denied another FOIA request related to COVID-19 vaccine safety. The agency refused to provide the results of autopsies performed on people who received COVID-19 vaccines and whose deaths were reported to VAERS. The Epoch Times has also appealed that determination.

Gas Starts Flowing to Poland Via New Baltic Pipe From Norway

WARSAW—Natural gas started flowing to Poland through the new Baltic Pipe pipeline from Norway via the Baltic Sea on the morning of Oct. 1, Polish gas pipeline operator Gaz-System said.

“Promises made over six years ago have been kept,” Gaz-System said, according to a translation of its Oct. 1 statement.

Gas started flowing at 6:10 a.m. on Oct. 1 via the Baltic Pipe pipeline, with nominations—or requests for sending gas through the pipeline—totaled 62.4 million kilowatt-hours (kwh), the company added.

“This is a historic moment and one that we’ve been awaiting for many years,” Anna Moskwa, Poland’s minister for climate and the environment, said in a statement.

The pipeline is at the center of Poland’s long-standing strategy to diversify its gas supplies away from Russia.

Construction of the Baltic Pipe system, which has an annual capacity of 10 billion cubic meters, resumed in March after a 33-month hiatus over environmental concerns.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine at the end of February not only forced European countries to rethink their reliance on Russian energy but also added impetus to completing the construction of the Baltic Pipeline linking Poland to Norwegian gas fields.

Construction of the pipeline was completed on Sept. 27, with Polish President Andrzej Duda calling it “one of the most significant days since 1989,” referring to the toppling of communism in the Eastern European country.

“This is a great day. A great day for Poland, for Denmark, Norway, and the entire European Union. It’s a great day for our part of Europe, for building security, peace, and for strengthening our sovereignty,” he said, according to the Office of the President.

Moskwa said in a statement that by diversifying gas supplies, Poland has become “energy secure” and that completion of Baltic Pipe is a symbol of Poland’s “energy sovereignty.”

Russia cut gas supplies to Poland in April when it refused to pay in roubles.

Baltic Pipe was officially inaugurated a day after leaks were detected in the subsea Nord Stream gas pipelines linking Russia to Europe.

Earlier this week, researchers with seismology agencies in Denmark and Sweden found that the damage to the Nord Stream pipelines was most likely caused by explosions and ruled out the possibility of natural causes.

According to data released by a team of seismologists, the blasts occurred in the vicinity of the location of the pipelines. Both Danish and Swedish seismic agencies picked up the alleged explosions on Sept. 26.

NATO Working with Weapons Industry to Ramp Up Production

The US and its European allies have begun depleting their arms stockpiles by transferring myriad weapons systems to Kiev. The civilian head of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, said he is working with the arms industry to increase production.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February, members of NATO have sent tens of billions in arms to Ukraine. On Wednesday, the White House announced a new $1.1 billion arms transfer to Kiev. Washington has led all donors by a significant margin, giving over $65 billion to Ukraine in just over seven months.

Most weapons President Joe Biden has sent to Ukraine have come under the Presidential Drawdown Authority, which allows the president to give away American weapons without Congressional approval. The legislature has approved billions for the PDA in a $40 billion Ukraine aid bill that was passed in May.

Over the past several months, reports have surfaced that Biden’s extensive use of the PDA has depleted American weapons stockpiles. In response, the White House has started working with the weapons industry to increase the production of several weapons systems. A White House official recently told the leaders of the arms trade that the Russian war would produce a windfall of new clients and revenue.

Speaking with the New York Times, Stoltenberg said Brussels is joining Washington in seeking to make more weapons. “We are now working with industry to increase production of weapons and ammunition,” he said.

CNBC reports the US has “essentially run out of 155 mm howitzers to transfer to Ukraine.” The current production capacity for 155 mm ammunition also falls short of what the White House is seeking to provide Kiev. Suppliers currently produce 30,000 rounds per year, an amount the Ukrainian army uses in two weeks.

Ramping up production will take time and money. When visiting a Lockheed Martin plant in May, Biden said, “this fight is not going to be cheap.”

West and Russia already fighting WW3 – former Trump advisor

Fiona Hill argues that Americans have “failed to recognize” the scope of the Ukraine conflict

“We’ve been in this for a long time, and we’ve failed to recognize it,” said Hill, who served in Donald Trump’s national security council before testifying against him during the 2019 impeachment inquiry.

With the US backing a coup in Kiev in 2014 and supplying military aid to Ukraine while it waged war against the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics in the eight years since, Hill suggested that Washington could reevaluate its stated policy of supporting Ukraine without becoming a direct party to the conflict.

“If the goal is to avoid a conflict in which we are already fighting, then does the rest of Washington’s approach to Russian aggression need to be reconsidered?” the New Yorker paraphrased her argument.

While Hill did not directly call for the US to enter open war with Russia, other US lawmakers and former officials have. Shortly after Russian troops rolled into Ukraine in February, a group of these national security experts called on President Joe Biden to enforce a “no-fly zone” over Ukraine. Such a measure would see the US and any willing NATO allies commit to shooting down Russian aircraft, something Moscow has explicitly said it would perceive as an act of war.

Russia already considers itself at war with NATO in Ukraine, and Putin has vowed to use “all available means” to defend its own territory, including four former Ukrainian regions set to join the Russian Federation in the coming days. In a speech on Friday after signing accession treaties for these four regions, Putin accused the West of waging a “hybrid war” against Russia to prevent the development of a “multipolar world.”

Nord Stream operator waiting for permits to start assessing pipeline damage

Nord Stream AG plans to start assessing the damage to the Nord Stream gas pipeline across the Baltic Sea as soon as it receives the necessary official permits, the pipeline operator said in a press release.

Access to the area of the incidents may be allowed only after the pressure in the gas pipeline has stabilised and the gas leakage has stopped, the company said.

"Until the completion of the damage assessment, it is not possible to predict the timeframe for restoration of the gas transmission infrastructure," it said.

The gas leaks on the two strings of the first Nord Stream pipeline and one of the two strings of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline occurred earlier this week near the Danish island of Bornholm.

The transit of Russian gas via Austria has been suspended due to the refusal of an Austrian operator to confirm nominations over changes in regulations, Gazprom said.

The Russian company is currently working on resolving the issue together with its customers in Italy.

"The transit of Russian gas on Gazprom Еxport contracts via Austrian territory has been suspended due to the refusal of the Austrian operator to confirm transport nominations. The reason is related to regulative changes that were introduced in Austria in late September. Gazprom is working on resolving the problem jointly with Italian customers," the statement reads.

Earlier, Italy’s Eni reported that it had received a notice from Gazprom that it would not be able to deliver gas in the requested volume on October 1 due to the impossibility of transit through Austria.

After sabotage at the Nord Stream gas pipeline, the only route to deliver Russian gas to Western and Central Europe is via Ukraine. Earlier, Gazprom said that on October 1, the volume of its deliveries via that line was 41.7 mln cubic meters.

According to the news agency, Russia did not receive the sufficient number of votes to remain in the council.

On its Twitter page, the ICAO published a list of countries included in the council following the Saturday vote. Within the framework of the first stage of voting, Australia, Brazil, the UK, Germany, Italy, Canada, China, the US, France and Japan were elected.

Earlier, Canadian Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra told Reuters that Canada was going to vote against electing Russia.

The Council consists of 36 ICAO member states.

Every psychopath is well practiced at lying; anyone who tolerates that person’s lying is not only encouraging psychopathy but is, oneself, psychopathically unconcerned about the public’s welfare, because any such encouragement will, itself, facilitate the further spreading of lies and deception of the public. This is how psychopathy, which is a merely personal disease, becomes spread and pandemic, thereby producing a dysfunctional society, widespread deception. It happens not only due to the presence of psychopaths, but also due to their passive assisters, who fail to call-out the lie and the liar and to expose them publicly so as to assist in penalizing them, instead of to assist the lies and liars, for those to spread and thrive.

Being a member of a society is to have both rights and obligations within it. Silence in the face of lies that one knows are false is a failure of such an obligation: an obligation to avoid willingly spreading a social disease — the disease of spreading those lies and that falsehood, to a rampantly and ever-increasingly contaminated public.

This was how it came to be that in 2003 the U.S. & UK Governments busted and neutered the U.N. by invading and occupying Iraq solely upon the basis of lies, and never prosecuted for having done so. Neither the Governments (their leaders) were prosecuted for it, nor the news-media (their controlling owners) that were controlled by the same group of billionaires (America’s billionaires, of both political Parties), were prosecuted for these international-war crimes. None of those leaders and their propaganda-organizations (or news-media — their owners) were prosecuted for having done, or assisted in doing, this. That clear fact has established a precedent which been followed, ever since, by constant international lying by those same two psychopathic regimes, and now it is heading toward production of a World War III on the same basis, of constant Governmental and news-media lying and spreading of lies. It is for “regime-change in Russia” instead of for “regime-change in Iraq,” but, just like before, the regimes that desperately NEED to be “changed” are the perpetrators of this enormous fraud, the ones that are in the United States and in the United Kingdom. The United Nations is sadly incapable of doing this — it has been virtually nullified ever since 2003 — but it must be done, before the end-result will annihilate us all.

The psychopathy of America’s leadership is now posing a mortal danger not only to the residents in one nation (Iraq; or, say, in Syria — there are so many other examples) but to the residents in all nations (WW III); and, if it is not stopped now, then the world will be stopped, and soon. This would be the extreme end of the pandemic of lies that go not only unpunished but hidden from the public, instead of exposed to the public (such as is being done here). If this pandemic — which is vastly worse even than the covid-19 disease or any other merely physical pandemic in all of human history — does not now get exposed in the full light of honest public disclosure (presumably by means of news-media that are NOT owned by U.S.-and-allied billionaires), then what hope will there be, for our children, and for their grandchildren (if this pandemic of evil will not have expired the world before then)? Pfizer CEO pulls out of testifying to EU Parliament COVID panel

High-level contacts between Albert Bourla and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen before multibillion-euro vaccine deal are under scrutiny.

Pfizer Chief Executive Albert Bourla has pulled out of an appointment to testify before the European Parliament's special committee on COVID-19, at which he was expected to face tough questions on how secretive vaccine deals were struck.

The decision follows an audit report into the EU's vaccine procurement strategy published earlier in the month that raised new questions about contact between Bourla and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that preceded a multibillion-euro vaccine contract.

The head of the U.S. pharmaceutical giant, the largest supplier of COVID-19 vaccines to the EU, was scheduled to appear before the panel on October 10. The committee is meeting with key officials involved in the EU's vaccine procurement process to draw lessons on how to respond to future pandemics. Other pharmaceutical executives have addressed the committee, including the CEO of Moderna and senior officials from AstraZeneca and Sanofi.

The committee's chair, Belgian MEP Kathleen Van Brempt, told POLITICO she "deeply regrets" the decision taken by Pfizer.

After a visit to BioNTech's headquarters last week, Van Brempt had said in a written statement that she looked forward to discussions "with other CEOs" including "Mr. Albert Bourla, the CEO of Pfizer" on October 10.

The report, by the European Court of Auditors, found that von der Leyen had been directly involved in preliminary negotiations for the EU's biggest vaccine contract, for up to 1.8 billion doses of the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine, which was concluded in May 2021. This was a departure from the negotiating procedure followed with other contracts, where a joint negotiating team made up of officials from the Commission and member countries conducted exploratory talks.

The EU watchdog also noted that the Commission refused to provide records of the discussions with Pfizer, either in the form of minutes, names of experts consulted, agreed terms, or other evidence.

Already in 2021, the New York Times reported on the seemingly-cozy relationship between Bourla and von der Leyen, with the two exchanging text messages in the run-up to the deal.

Contacted by POLITICO, a spokesperson for Pfizer said the company's president of international development markets, Janine Small, would attend the committee hearing. "She has been identified as best placed to support the committee in meeting their objectives," the spokesperson said.

Sweden Removes Recommendation on General Vaccination Against COVID-19 for Ages 12 to 17

The decision means that from 1 November 2022 only children in special groups with increased sensitivity to covid-19 are recommended and thus offered vaccination against covid-19. It is about individuals within groups that are judged to be more sensitive to respiratory infections in general, or have a significantly reduced immune system. These groups are defined by the Swedish Pediatric Association.

For fundamentally healthy children and young people, SARS-CoV-2, according to the Public Health Agency and representatives from the pediatric profession and the Swedish Pediatric Association, can be considered a common respiratory virus in this phase of the pandemic.

The general recommendation on vaccination against covid-19 is only removed for fundamentally healthy children in the 12-17 year age group. For those who have turned 18, the recommendation for adults applies, that you should take three doses to have basic protection against covid-19.

The Public Health Authority’s decision has been made after dialogue with representatives of relevant organisations, including the Swedish Association of Pediatricians and the National Program Area (NPO) for children and young people’s health. The state of knowledge and the epidemiology of covid-19 is continuously monitored. In the event of a possible change in the situation for children and young people in Sweden, the recommendations may change.
