A66-year-old Calgary man is facing numerous charges after a17hour standoff involving police officers in Mississauga was resolved peacefully early Saturday morning.
Peel Regional Police were initially called to a building in the area of Eglinton Avenue West and Erin Mills Parkway just after 7:30 a.m. Friday. When they arrived they learned a man armed with several firearms had barricaded himself in a medical facility adjacent to Credit Valley Hospital.
While roads in the area were closed down, the emergency department at the nearby hospital remained open to receive patients.
Negotiations with the man continued until just after midnight when the individual was taken into custody without incident.
Police have charged William Horodyski with a number of offences including careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and three counts of forcible confinement.
Photos released by police show at least four weapons were recovered.
“Investigators from the 11 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau will be working closely with the Calgary Police Service over the next number of weeks in an attempt to understand fully the nature of the incident, and the motives of the individual charged,” police said in a statement on Saturday.
