Metrolink and Amtrak Suspend Service Between LA and San Diego Indefinitely Due to the Ground Shifting

Metrolink and Amtrak have announced that they are suspending service between Los Angeles and San Diego because of the ground shifting.

The stretch of land that shifted occurred in San Clemente and had caused movement on the rail line.

Fox Business reports that “this comes after a recent ocean surge connected to Tropical Storm Kay led to high tides and waves that shifted the coastal tracks, which serve as the only viable link from San Diego to Los Angeles and the rest of the country.”

“Safety concerns to the right-of-way in San Clemente have made it necessary to suspend train service through the area,” Amtrak said in a travel advisory. “Pacific Surfliner trains will not operate between Irvine and San Diego until further notice. We are working with our partners to set up train service between Oceanside and San Diego, as well as bus connections to/from Irvine and Oceanside. We will share updates as soon as details are available.”

Amtrak said that “regular service will resume once the repairs are completed.”

Metrolink issued a similar service update, saying that, “Unfortunately, continued movement to the right of way in the San Clemente area is forcing Metrolink to suspend Orange County Line and Inland Empire-Orange County Line service south of the Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo Station beginning Friday and until further notice.”

“Working with geologists, geotechnical engineers, and surveyors, we have determined to ensure passenger safety service suspension is necessary,” the notice continued. “Until we have confirmation from the experts the slope movement has stopped, we will not resume Metrolink service.”

The Orange County Transportation Authority, who is responsible for the tracks, is scheduled to hold a meeting about the issue on Monday.

“The emergency plan will likely involve driving large ground anchors into the bottom of the slope next to the track to prevent movement,” OCTA spokesperson Eric Carpenter told the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The closed area of track is part of one of the busiest railways in the country.

“Annual ridership is nearly 3 million on Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner trains and 5 million on Coaster and Metrolink commuter trains, according to the Orange County Transportation Authority,” the Union-Tribune report said. “Freight trains carry $1 billion in goods annually on the route, according to a 2021 report by state Secretary of Transportation David S. Kim.”

Fears Credit Suisse is on the brink of collapse

One of the world’s biggest banks insists it is in a “strong” financial position, amid fears of a looming Lehman Brothers moment that could spark a major crisis.

Credit Suisse is scrambling to reassure investors and clients about its liquidity and capital position as rumours swirl that the major global investment bank is on the verge of collapse.

The troubled Swiss lender — which has seen its share price plunge by 60 per cent over the past year to a near record low, following a string of scandals and losses — saw a sharp rise in the spreads on its credit default swaps on Friday, sparking fevered online speculation.

Credit default swaps offer protection against a company defaulting on its bonds.

The rapid rise last week of around 15 per cent, to levels last seen in 2009 during the financial crisis, suggested investors were worried about Credit Suisse’s financial health.

U.S. Main Proxy In Syria’s Al-Tanf Rejects New Leader, Starts Mutiny

The United States main proxy in the southeastern Syrian area of al-Tanf, Maghaweir al-Thowra (MaT), has officially rejected the coalition’s recent decision to remove its leader Muhanad Tala.

Tala, who founded the MaT in 2016 with support from the U.S.-led coalition, is a former colonel of the Syrian Arab Army who defected early on in the war. The coalition removed Tala from his position last week. The leader was replaced by Muhammad Farid Qassem, a former captain who joined the rebels after defecting from the army and later formed the al-Qaryatayn Martyrs Brigade in al-Tanf with support from the U.S.

In a statement released on October 2, the Joint Military Command of the MaT rejected the U.S. decision to appoint Qassem as the group’s new leader, denouncing the coalition’s attempts to intervene in its internal affairs.

“We reject the attempt to impose Cpt. Muhammad Farid Qassem as the army commander for many reasons, the simplest of which is that he is not one of our officers or affiliates, and call on the General Command of the Coalition to intervene directly to avoid the dangerous repercussions that could arise as a result of this irresponsible decision,” the statement reads.

The MaT maintains at least 300 militants in the coalition al-Tanf garrison, where some 200 U.S. troops are usually deployed.

Qassem, who is a violent radical, was reportedly appointed as the new leader of the MaT upon direct orders from the U.S. Central Command. Despite his alleged terrorist activities with the al-Qaryatayn Martyrs Brigade, Qassem remained very close to the coalition. He even worked with the U.S. Special Operations Command.

Tala was allegedly sacked from his position because of a recent trip he made to Turkey, during which he held talks with the country’s intelligence officials.

The decision to remove Tala led to a series of protests by civilians and militants in al-Tanf garrison and the nearby Rukban refugee camp.

In an attempt to ease the tension, the new MaT leader and and unidentified commander of the U.S.-led coalition released a video message on October 2. Qassem said in the message that he will work with the coalition to build “future Syria,” while the coalition commander stressed that they will provide all support for him.

The poorly-directed message, which highlights the coalition’s sadistic relationship with its proxies in Syria, has clearly failed to convince the opponents of Qassem.

All in all, it appeases that the U.S.-led coalition al-Tanf garrison is now experiencing a mutiny led by the MaT. The coalition does not appear to be willing to compromise. This could lead to more escalation and instability in the area. It could also open the door to the area for Damascus and its allies.

Pastor’s Victim Says He ‘Remorselessly Stole’ Her Childhood

ST. LOUIS – U.S. District Judge Ronnie L. White on Thursday sentenced a former youth pastor from New York to 13 years and four months in prison for the sexual abuse of a Missouri 15-year-old in 2013.

Judge White also ordered Jesse E. Vargas, 38, to pay $146,594 in restitution to his victim.

Vargas originally met the then 11-year-old girl at a religious camp in Michigan where he worked.

“Over the course of the next four years Jesse played with my family and I like frogs in a pot,” the victim said in court during Thursday’s hearing. “Slowly increasing the temperature of his manipulation until we each were unaware of the water we had been submerged in, let alone its suddenly scalding temperature. By age thirteen I abandoned most of my spiritual leaders and friendships at his suggestion. By fourteen he even guided me to push away my two closest friends,” she said.

In January of 2013, Vargas traveled from New York to the St. Louis area home of the teen. He stayed in her family’s house and preached a sermon at her church. During the visit, he also sexually abused her.

“I was assured by him throughout my formative young teenage years that ‘The World’ wouldn’t understand the illicit affair of ours he was suggesting, but God had provided us a path that we should follow together in secret. Tell no one. Trust no one else,” the victim said.

He returned in March of 2013 and abused her again. In June of that year, he arranged for her to travel to New York, where he abused her again. He exchanged images and videos containing nude images with the teen via social media apps and text messages.

The victim also spoke about the effects of Vargas’ abuse, including PTSD. “As a lifelong honors student with high career hopes entering high school, I instead dropped out because I was simply too exhausted to care about anything.”

Vargas, of Nassau County, pleaded guilty March 22 to two felony counts: travel with the intent to engage in illicit sexual contact and coercion and enticement of a minor.

The case was investigated by the FBI and the Hazelwood Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jillian Anderson prosecuted the case.

“The way Jesse Vargas used the guise of spiritual instruction is repugnant. He manipulated not only his victim, but the adults who tried to protect her,” said Acting Special Agent in Charge Mark Dargis of the FBI St. Louis Division. “I commend the victim’s bravery for coming forward, in spite of having to relive her trauma, to prevent others from becoming a victim.”
