Former Therapist Arrested in Ritualistic Child Sexual Abuse Case Involving Over 130 Kids
A Provo, Utah, man has been arrested on six felony charges involving sex crimes against minors and one misdemeanor charge.
Sergeant Elyse Hines, of the Utah County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit, arrested David Lee Hamblin, 68, of Provo at 9:15 a.m. Thursday. He was booked into the Utah County Jail where he remains without bail.
Hamblin was arrested on three first-degree felony charges of sodomizing a child, one felony count of raping a child and two first-degree felony charges of aggravated sexual abuse of a child. He also faces one misdemeanor count of lewdness involving a child, according to a statement from Sheriff Mike Smith.
The arrest of the former psychologist and member of the Church of Latter Day Saints resulted from a May 31 plea for information about ritualistic sexual abuse and child sex trafficking. The sheriff’s office issued a press release then to identify such crimes committed between 1990 and 2010 in the counties of Utah, Juab and Sanpete.
Reports since the sheriff’s appeal have poured in from more than 130 victims with credible accounts, according to a Post Millenial report.
“This case is still being actively investigated,” Smith said. “We will not discuss ongoing details of this case. We also will not discuss the names of victims, suspects, or witnesses who may be involved in this case.”
Only accounts from one female claiming Hamblin raped her as a child is detailed in the Probable Cause Statement prepared by the sheriff’s office.
Juab County Attorney Ryan Peters has been deputized as a special prosecutor by the Utah Attorney General’s Office for this case, according to the sheriff.
A female reported in April she was sexually assaulted repeatedly over several years by Hamblin, according to the probable cause statement filed with the Utah County 4th District Court. The alleged sexual assaults began when the individual was approximately six years old, in the mid ’80s. According to the statement, her family lived in the same neighborhood as Hamblin. The female stated she regularly played with his children and Hamblin had been her babysitter many times.
The first assault the female victim can recall happened while playing at Hamblin’s home. She said she and two other children were sexually abused by the former psychologist in Hamblin’s basement. The victim declared she and the other two children were forced to stand before Hamblin, who allegedly directed them to take turns “sucking on his penis,” according to the probable cause statement.
Hamblin allegedly forced each child to take turns administering oral sex while he critiqued and criticized their abilities. The victim recalled feeling shame and confusion at the time. Investigators with the sheriff’s department interviewed the two other child victims present during the assault and both corroborated what she disclosed, the statement added.
Hamblin’s next sexual assault of her allegedly occurred when she was 7 or 8 years old, just before her baptism. It also happened at the Hamblin residence. The female victim reported she was forced headfirst into a sleeping bag. The Provo man reportedly proceeded to use his fingers to digitally penetrate her vagina before he allegedly forced his penis into her vagina.
The victim stated she remembered the pain inflicted by his penis. The victim exclaimed Hamblin became frustrated, grabbed her by the ankles, and flipped her onto her stomach. He then straddled the child and digitally penetrated her anus. After this, the female victim explained Hamblin forced his penis into her anus.
She described feeling terror and claustrophobia because her head and upper torso were still trapped in the sleeping bag. This sexual assault ended when Hamblin “made some sounds and tensed up” before walking away, the statement noted.
Just before her 13th birthday, she entered Hamblin’s bedroom where he was laying on the bed with his penis exposed. Hamblin allegedly commanded her to perform oral sex on an adult female lying naked on the bed next to him, instructing her to “lick everything.”
