To promote racial equality, NC sheriff's office is no longer enforcing minor traffic violations

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office announced Monday that it will no longer be pulling over drivers for minor traffic violations, like driving with a revoked license, having a tail light out, or inspection violations.
The sheriff's office told WSOC-TV this is a part of an effort to address racial inequality in the county.
Mecklenburg County is the second-largest county in North Carolina, right behind Wake County.
Local activists are applauding the sheriff's office's decision. Robert Dawkins, with the grassroots community organization Action NC, said deputies often use minor violations to profile Black and Hispanic residents.
Traffic violations can be a financial blow to low-income residents, he said.
