Most people aren't able to wrap their heads around sex and love being separate things, and often choose not to separate them. Many mammals aren't monogamous. Some dolphins use sex for social bonding. Apes are full 80/20 rule. The divorce rate with humans tells you all you need to know about human nature, but in order to have a functional society, you have to guarantee everyone has a chance at a mate even if it doesn't really work that way. Being chaste and practicing extreme restraint is contrary to nature, but society has to at least pretend it's the norm, else institutions like the family will take second place to hedonism as the rule of thumb.
