As of October 7, 2022 While China and Russia both have hypersonic missiles in service, the US does not.

Military powers in Russia, China, and the United States are working to develop hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV) weapons.

These are highly maneuverable weapons that can theoretically fly at hypersonic speeds while adjusting course and altitude to fly under radar detection and around missile defenses.

Experts say such weapons are currently impossible for the USA to defend against.

Russia is thought to have an HGV in its arsenal, the Avangard system, which Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2018 claimed was “practically invulnerable” to Western air defenses.

Gerasimov said that the missile hit its target 450 kilometres away in the Barents Sea and hit a Mach 8 speed — eight times the speed of sound.

United States doesn't have hypersonic missiles in service and is investing heavily to develop the technology.

The United States will launch a new testing programme for hypersonic weapons, as it seeks to catch up with China and Russia in the arms race.
