Maine District Attorney race draws in $350k from Soros-backed PAC

PORTLAND (WGME)– Some big out-of-state money is showing up in a relatively small Maine political race.
The ads are funded largely by George Soros, a multi-billionaire known for backing liberal candidates.
The ads, which are not running on CBS13 or FOX23, are attacking the current Cumberland County District Attorney's past ties to the Republican party.
A federal database shows Jonathan Sahrbeck donated $50 to the Republican National Committee in 2008.

One of the ads also says Sahrbeck prosecuted a sex trafficking victim.
According to the Portland Press Herald, the woman and state came to an agreement in 2018, which stated her case would be dismissed if she stayed out of trouble for a year.
"Well if you look at the actual record, we had no information that that person was a sex trafficking victim at that time," Sahrbeck said.

Sahrbeck says his hands were tied and he had to move the case forward because of the law at the time, which he since helped to change.
"It's been just mindboggling," Allyson Ray with Just Love Worldwide said.
Advocates are coming to his defense. They say the ad doesn't reflect his work.
"That ad that was put out on Jonathan, when I first saw it, itcompletely contradictswhat we worked on so hard," Tierra Ross with Survivor Speak USA said.
The ads come from the Maine Justice and Public Safety PAC, which has spent $350,000 to help his opponent Jackie Sartoris, according to state records.
Sartoris is currently the assistant district attorney in Kennebec County. Sahrbeck didn't know why the group was getting involved with the race.

"A lot of people like my common sense ideas. And apparently one of them is somebody named George Soros," Sartoris said.
She says she is not involved in anyway with the group or the ads' messages.
"I said right away when I saw the first ad, which came as much of a surprise to me as anyone else, that I do not like the tone of these ads," Sartoris said.
And there's nothing that she can to stop them.
"It's not about whether I support it or not. I didn't ask for it. It's here anyway," Sartoris said.
In a statement to CBS13, a representative reiterated claims made in the ads.
"Unlike her opponent who just switched parties in time to run for re-election, Jacqueline Sartoris is a lifelong Democrat and we're proud to support her campaign to bring real reform, safety and transparency to Cumberland County," Maine Justice and Public Safety PAC Treasurer Whitney Tymas said.
Without a Republican in the race, whichever Democratic candidate wins Tuesday's primary will likely become the District Attorney
