Toronto, Ontario, April 21, 2020 โ€“ As researchers around the globe and across the country accelerate their efforts to study the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine in treating COVID-19, Apotex, Canadaโ€™s largest pharmaceutical company and the only manufacturer of hydroxychloroquine in the country, announced a donation today of two million dosages of the medication to the federal government.

The company shifted priorities several weeks ago to scale up production and repurpose its plants to manufacture even more hydroxychloroquine, while ensuring Canadians currently being treated with the drug for approved indications have continued access.

โ€œOur goal from the outset has been to protect the supply of this product for patients currently using it for approved indications,โ€ said Jeff Watson President & CEO, Apotex. โ€œAt the same time, we recognize the importance of building a clinical profile of this medicine to determine its efficacy in treating COVID-19, and we are fortunate to be able to meet both needs.โ€

The donated medication will be set aside for current and future COVID-19 related clinical trials that are approved by Health Canadaโ€™s Office of Clinical Trials at the Therapeutic Products Directorate. In fact, vehicle manufacturers may not deny a warranty claim based on use of a different fuel if that fuel did not contribute to the problem for which the warranty claim is made.

โ€“ Unleaded 88 has a negligible effect on fuel economy. Studies by Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory have shown that with all other things being equal, ethanolโ€™s impact on fuel economy would be equal to the loss of energy density. This translates into a loss of less than 2% for Unleaded 88 when compared to regular gasoline. For a vehicle getting 30 mpg this would equate to a drop to around 29.4 mpg, or about the loss of miles to the gallon when vehicle tires are improperly inflated.

โ€“ A U.S. Department of Agriculture analysis shows that ethanol continues to significantly reduce greenhouse gases (GHG). The study notes that ethanol use in transportation fuel reduces GHG by 43% and projects that, based on current trends, these reductions will reach 47% by 2022.

โ€“ Unleaded 88 can easily be identified at the pump. Look for the government-required orange and black label referencing E15 for use in 2001 and newer passenger vehicles and flex-fuel vehicles (as seen on the right).

โ€“ Unleaded 88 can be used in nearly all existing fuel infrastructure without risk of damage. Underwriters Laboratories announced its research supports the use of fuel blends containing 15% ethanol at Americaโ€™s gas station pumps.

โ€“ EPA did not approve the use of Unleaded 88 in 2000 and older model vehicles. This was primarily due to the fact that these older vehicles have a number of variables โ€“ mileage, state of repair, types of use โ€“ that would result in inconclusive test data.

NASA Selects New Instruments for Priority Artemis Science on Moon

 

Adding to the growing list of commercial deliveries slated to explore more of the Moon than ever before under Artemis, NASA has selected two new science instrument suites, including one that will study the mysterious Gruithuisen Domes for the first time.

 

These payload suites mark the second selection through the agencyโ€™s Payloads and Research Investigations on the Surface of the Moon (PRISM) call for proposals. Both payloads will be delivered to the lunar surface on future flights through NASAโ€™s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative, which is one part of the agencyโ€™s larger lunar exploration architecture planned for this decade.

 

โ€œThe two selected studies will address important scientific questions related to the Moonโ€ said Joel Kearns, deputy associate administrator for exploration in NASAโ€™s Science Mission Directorate. โ€œThe first will study geologic processes of early planetary bodies that are preserved on the Moon, by investigating a rare form of lunar volcanism. The second will study the effects of the Moonโ€™s low gravity and radiation environment on yeast, a model organism used to understand DNA damage response and repair.โ€

 

The Lunar Vulkan Imaging and Spectroscopy Explorer (Lunar-VISE) investigation consists of a suite of five instruments, two of which will be mounted on a stationary lander and three mounted on a mobile rover to be provided as a service by the CLPS vendor.

 

Over the course of 10 Earth days (one lunar day), Lunar-VISE will explore the summit of one of the Gruithuisen Domes. These domes are suspected to have been formed by a sticky magma rich in silica, similar in composition to granite. On Earth, formations like these need oceans of liquid water and plate tectonics to form, but without these key ingredients on the Moon, lunar scientists have been left to wonder how these domes formed and evolved over time.

 

By analyzing the lunar regolith at the top of one of these domes, the data collected and returned by Lunar-VISEโ€™s instruments will help scientists answer fundamental open questions regarding how these formations came to be. The data also will help inform future robotic and human missions to the Moon. Dr. Kerri Donaldson Hanna of the University of Central Florida will lead this payload suite.

 

The second selected investigation, the Lunar Explorer Instrument for space biology Applications (LEIA) science suite, is a small CubeSat-based device. LEIA will provide biological research on the Moon โ€“ which cannot be simulated or replicated with high fidelity on the Earth or International Space Station โ€“ by delivering the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae to the lunar surface and studying its response to radiation and lunar gravity. S. cerevisiae is an important model of human biology, especially in the areas of genetics, cellular and molecular replication and division processes, and DNA damage response to environmental factors such as radiation. The data returned by LEIA, in conjunction with previously existing data from other biological studies, could help scientists answer a decades-old question of how partial gravity and actual deep space radiation in combination influence biological processes. Dr. Andrew Settles of NASAโ€™s Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley, California will lead the LEIA payload suite.

 

With these selections in place, NASA will work with the CLPS office at the agencyโ€™s Johnson Space Center in Houston to issue task orders to deliver these payload suites to the Moon in the 2026 timeframe.

 

For these payload suites, the agency also has selected two project scientists to coordinate science activities for the selected instrument suites, including working with the payloads on landing site selection, developing concepts of operations, and archiving science data acquired during surface operations. Dr. John Karcz of NASA Ames Research Center in California will coordinate the Lunar-VISE investigation suite for delivery to the Gruithuisen Domes, and Dr. Cindy Young of NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, will coordinate the LEIA investigation suite for delivery.

 

CLPS is a key part of NASAโ€™s Artemis lunar exploration plans. The science and technology payloads sent to the Moonโ€™s surface will help lay the foundation for human missions on and around the Moon. The agency has made seven task order awards to CLPS providers for lunar deliveries between in the early 2020s with more delivery awards expected through 2028.

Under the 1997 NATO-Russia Founding Act, NATO agreed not to establish a permanent military presence east of Germany. US officials insist the base in Poland does not violate the act since it is only a permanent facility, and the troops will be deployed rotationally, but itโ€™s unlikely Moscow will see it that way.

 

Other measures Biden announced include sending a โ€œrotational brigadeโ€ of 5,000 troops to Romania, stepping up rotational deployments to the Baltics, sending two additional F-35 squadrons to the UK, and stationing more air defenses in Germany in Italy. Undercover Sting Nets 43 Arrests for Child Sex Trafficking, Drugs in Arizona: ICE

 

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced on May 27 that an undercover operation targeting commercial human trafficking, including sex trafficking, had led to the arrests of 43 individuals.

 

The operation, in which officials worked alongside Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), was dubbed โ€œSpring Flingโ€ and targeted alleged sexual predators in Arizona, focusing on hotel prostitution and street prostitution enforcement, ICE said in a press release.

 

HSI joined the Scottsdale Police Department Human Exploitation and Trafficking (HEaT) Unit and the police departments from Phoenix, Mesa, Tempe, Gilbert, and Surprise, along with Arizona State University Police Department for the operation.

 

In total, 43 people were arrested for crimes that included child sex trafficking, prostitution, drug charges, and misconduct involving weapons.

 

Officials said that the suspects allegedly solicited or brokered deals for various sex acts before being apprehended. The majority of those arrested were charged with prostitution.

 

These latest arrests come shortly after law enforcement officers were able to locate and recover 70 missing children, most of them in West Texas, following a three-week operation involving multiple agencies.

 

Known as โ€œOperation Lost Souls,โ€ the police action ran from the end of April through mid-May in El Paso, Midland, and Ector and Tom Green counties in Texas.

 

The missing children ranged from 10 to 17 years old and were victims of sex trafficking and physical and sexual abuse. Many of them were runaways.

 

Although a majority of the children were located in West Texas, some were also recovered from the Dallasโ€“Fort Worth area, as well as the state of Colorado, and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. The agencies provided victim services and counseling to the recovered children and their families.

The jurisdiction of the United States Capitol Police centers on the United States Capitol building in Washington, D.C., the adjacent congressional (House and Senate) offices, and the Library of Congress buildings. This primary jurisdiction is about 270 acres (0.42 sq mi; 1.1 km2), with about 58 acres (0.091 sq mi; 0.23 km2) being the Capitol grounds themselves.[4] The U.S. Capitol Police also have extended jurisdiction over parts of Northeast, Northwest, and Southwest Washington D.C.[5] The USCP protects House and Senate leaders, other congresspeople depending on individual risk analysis, lawmakers' state and district offices (with the help of local police), and "off-campus" events such as presidential nominating conventions.[2]

 

History

The history of the United States Capitol Police dates back to 1801 when Congress moved from the city of Philadelphia to the newly constructed Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. At the time, Congress appointed one watchman to protect the building and Congressional property.

 

The police were formally created by Congress in 1828 following the assault on John Adams II, the son of John Quincy Adams, in the Capitol rotunda. The United States Capitol Police had as its original duty the provision of security for the United States Capitol.[10]

 

Its mission has expanded to provide the congressional community and its visitors with a variety of security services. These services are provided through the use of a variety of specialty support units, a network of foot and vehicular patrols, fixed posts, a full-time Containment and Emergency Response Team (CERT), K-9, a Patrol/Mobile Response Division and a full-time Hazardous Devices and Hazardous Materials Sections.[11][12]

 

In 1979, the Capitol Police got a separate chief of police; the role had previously been filled by officers of the Metropolitan Police Department.[13][14]

 

In 2005 Congress established the United States Capitol Police (USCP) Office of Inspector General (OIG) as a legislative agency. The Inspector General heads OIG, supervises and conducts audits, inspections, and investigations involving USCP programs, functions, systems, and operations, and reports directly to the Capitol Police Board.[15]

 

The Library of Congress Police were merged into the force in 2009.[16][17]

 

The Sergeant at Arms of the U.S. House of Representatives is a member of the Capitol Police Board and reports to the Speaker of the House.

 

Prior to 2021, four Capitol police officers had died in the line of duty.[18]

The advertisement, protesting the treatment of the Rev. Drueke and Huynh apparently got at least one shot off at a Russian vehicle, destroying it with a rocket-propelled grenade before their capture.

 

Drueke, a veteran of the US Army, served in Iraq. His mother told the Telegraph that he had suffered from PTSD and was struggling to hold down a job before going to Ukraine.

 

โ€œThe US Embassy have assured me that they are doing everything they can to find him and that they are searching for him alive, not dead,โ€ Lois Drueke said. โ€œI am doing my best not to fall apart, I am going to stay strong. Huynh, a former Marine, left to fight in Ukraine in April, according to Alabama ABC affiliate WAAY.

Israeli occupation forces said that they shot down the three UAVs off the Mediterranean coast. One of the UAVs was downed by an F16 fighter jet, and the other two by Barak missiles launched from the Saar 5 Class Corvette, according to a statement by the IOF.

 

Israeli officials claimed the UAVs were intercepted "at a safe distance" from the drilling platform that is active in the disputed region.

 

Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah had recently threatened the Israeli occupation over its attempts to forcibly extract gas from the contested region, saying the resistance is prepared to prevent them from infringing on Lebanese sovereignty.
