Colonizing a Catholic Hero
Why the Left hates Christopher Columbus

DETROIT (ChurchMilitant.com) - Italian navigator and explorer Christopher Columbus has been a target of leftist hatred for years. But why?
So-called social justice warriors often attribute all manner of cruelties and horrors to Columbus and his conquest of the supposedly peaceful, defenseless Americas.

The Left has often defaced or removed statues honoring Columbus
A California football coach lamented last year, "[H]e initiated a new world genocide; that's what he did. … He took slaves, he mutilated, he murdered, and we're going to … honor him?"
Such slander is common. Leftists have defaced statues of Columbus, demanded memorials to the explorer be torn down and loudly declared him a genocidal colonizer.
Columbus has even been stripped of his eponymous day of honor. Last year, fake-Catholic and unelected President Joe Biden declared Indigenous Peoples' Day a national holiday in an effort to replace the day honoring the brave explorer who brought Catholicism to the Americas.
Countless left-wing leaders have jumped on the Columbus-bashing bandwagon. Senator Elizabeth Warren — a White woman who pretends to be Native American when politically convenient — praised Indigenous Peoples' Day with no mention of Columbus. Unelected Vice President Kamala Harris — the not-far-removed descendant of a prominent slave-owner — did the same.
Popularized Myths
But why do lefties spout such hatred for the man credited with discovering the New World?
One reason is the erroneous claim Columbus committed genocide against native populations. Unfortunately for the woke mob, the so-called atrocities they point to occurred some 30 years after Columbus' voyage, and he had no involvement. It was, instead, the acts of conquistador Hernán Cortés and his men that leftists have in mind when smearing Columbus as a murderer.
Columbus did not enslave the native populations he found.
But even Cortés is mischaracterized. He did kill the Aztec emperor Moctezuma and destroy the Aztec temple and capital of Tenochtitlán, but he did so to put a stop to the horrific practice of human sacrifice. The Aztecs would regularly carve human hearts out of live men and women — and often feast upon them — as a form of worship to the gods. In subsequent centuries, European accounts of these horrors were labeled exaggerated propaganda to justify conquest and colonization. But in 2015 and 2018, archeologists discovered proof the conquistadors' accounts were accurate.

"That Columbus, or Cristóbal Colón (to give him his proper spanish name), was a slave trader is a matter of historical fact. He cut his nautical teeth sailing under a portugese flag engaged in the african slave trade a dozen years before 1492. When easy wealth in the form of gold proved not readily available in the Caribbean, Colón resumed his slave-trading occupation by loading the holds of his ships with Indian human cargo headed for the slave market in Seville. That he was a thief is equally self-evident, however a high-level thief he may have been. The law of tribute that he instituted in the island he called Española sometime in 1495 forced Indian people on the island to surrender goods, including gold ore, can only be classed as armed robbery."
