Infection cases appear to be spreading in Europe, the UN health agency warns

Europe is likely to be entering yet another wave of Covid-19, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) have said, urging the region to act immediately.

“Although we are not where we were one year ago, it is clear that the Covid-19 pandemic is still not over,” WHO’s Europe director, Hans Kluge, and ECDC’s director, Andrea Ammon, said in a joint statement on Wednesday. “We are unfortunately seeing indicators rising again in Europe, suggesting that another wave of infections has begun,” they noted.

Health officials said that all the available tools, including vaccination, should be used to protect people, especially the most vulnerable.

“The potential co-circulation of Covid-19 and seasonal influenza will put vulnerable people at increased risk of severe illness and death, with the likelihood of increased pressure on both hospitals and healthcare workers, already exhausted from almost three years on the frontlines of the pandemic,” the statement reads.

According to the authorities, millions of people across Europe have still not been jabbed against Covid-19, whereas “there’s no time to lose.” They stressed it’s necessary to “be ready and act now” and urged people to “come forward as soon as possible for both Covid-19 and influenza vaccination.”

According to WHO’s data, only Europe recorded a rise in the number of infection cases in the last week of September - an 8% rise compared to the previous period.

Last month, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the end of the Covid-19 pandemic –which started in 2019– was “in sight.” While the virus is still spreading at the same level as in 2021, despite mass vaccination, deaths have fallen significantly.

According to the organization, since the beginning of the pandemic there have been over 620 million confirmed cases of Covid-19, leading to more than 6.5 million deaths.

Japan's Finance Minister vows new intervention as Yen further falls

The Yen declines past the level that prompted recent intervention.

The finance minister of Japan, Shunichi Suzuki, stated on Friday that Tokyo is closely observing market events and is prepared to take the necessary actions in light of the national currency's continued decline and speculative volatility.

Despite the finance ministry's monetary intervention on September 22, when the exchange rate touched 145.9 yen per dollar, the Japanese yen plunged to 147.66 per US dollar on Thursday.

"We are closely watching market developments with a sense of heightened vigilance. We will take appropriate steps against excessive volatility," Suzuki told a press conference after the G20 finance ministers’ meeting in Washington. The minister also said that "excessive" fluctuations, led by speculators, would not be tolerated.

In response to a persistent decline in the value of the national currency, the Japanese Finance Ministry lasts month carried out the first currency intervention since June 1998 by buying the yen and selling the US dollar.

The policy provided a brief exchange rate of 140 JPY for every US dollar. However, a few days later, the exchange rate once more fell to between 144 and 145 yen for every US dollar.

The decision came after the US Federal Reserve boosted benchmark interest rates by three-quarters of a percentage point on September 22, which caused the US dollar to gain ground versus other global currencies, notably the yen. Since the COVID-19 pandemic's onset, the US interest rate has increased five times.

Musk under federal investigation – Twitter’s attorneys

The billionaire is being probed over his failed acquisition of the social media company, according to a court filing

Billionaire Elon Musk is now the subject of a federal investigation over his failed $44-billion Twitter deal, the company has said, in court documents seen by US media.

In a letter to Delaware Court of Chancery Judge Kathaleen McCormick, Twitter’s attorneys have asked for assistance in obtaining “documents about the probes.” Since July, the company’s officials have been trying to receive files on “all the communications with any governmental authority concerning the merger,” as cited by Bloomberg. Musk’s lawyers limited the handover of the documents, referring to confidentiality rules.

“Elon Musk is presently under investigation by federal authorities for his conduct in connection with the acquisition of Twitter,” lawyers from Potter Anderson Corroon LLP, representing the social media giant, explained in an October 6 filing.

“This game of ‘hide the ball’ must end,” Twitter’s representatives said, emphasizing that Musk's lawyers had so far failed to provide the documents requested during the litigation process.

The letter does not reveal which agency is conducting the investigation, what is the substance of the probe or whether it’s a civil or a criminal investigation.

Musk’s attorney Alex Spiro, in turn, described the filing as a “misdirection” and claimed that Twitter is trying to distract attention from its own legal problems: in July, the company’s former security head, Peiter ‘Mudge’ Zatko, accused Twitter of deliberately ignoring some serious security vulnerabilities.

“Twitter’s executives are under federal investigation. This misdirection was sent by Twitter to try and uncover which of their assorted misconduct they are under investigation for,” Spiro told CNN.

Twitter officials declined to comment on Spiro’s statement. They also refrained from elaborating on their understanding of any investigation into Musk, when approached by Reuters.

Earlier this month, Musk revived his offer to buy Twitter, months after previous negotiations soured and prompted the social media giant to sue in an effort to force the massive purchase.

While Twitter later responded that it still hoped to finish the transaction on its original terms, the company did not say whether it would drop its lawsuit against Musk, which was launched in July.

Meanwhile, in spring, the US Securities and Exchange Commission confirmed that it was conducting a probe into whether Musk was truly a passive investor in Twitter, as he claimed to be, and whether he’d properly disclosed the 9% stake he had previously bought in the platform.

Number of Refugees Resettled in Britain Increases 56-Fold to 240,000 Over Past Year: Migration Watch

The number of refugees resettled in Britain through official schemes has increased by 56 times over the past year compared to the average over the the previous five years, according to a report from Migration Watch UK.

The think tank, which advocates for reasonable border control against mass migration said that direct refugee immigration to the UK over the past year totalled approximately 240,000 people, up from an average of around 4,200 per year between 2015 and 2020.

The massive increase in refugee resettlement in Britain was driven in large part by Ukrainians and Hong Kongers fleeing their homelands. According to the Migration Watch analysis, around 150,000 refugees from Ukraine have arrived in Britain since the start of 2021, while another 120,000 people have used the British National Overseas (BNO) route offered to those fleeing from Hong Kong after the brutal crackdown on freedoms by the Chinese Communist Party to resettle in the UK.

An additional 21,450 refugees have come to Britain from Afghanistan following the country’s fall to the Taliban after the bungled withdrawal from the country by the Biden administration.

The think tank noted that “worryingly” the government has so far been unable to identify which specific legal routes those fleeing from Afghanistan have used to get to the UK, highlighting the ramshackle efforts during the chaotic fall of the country.

“Meanwhile, over a year after the Taliban seized power, the government still can’t tell us the numbers who have arrived respectively via each of the specific resettlement routes from Afghanistan. This failure to release adequate data hugely damages transparency and accountability and is a disservice to the hard-pressed taxpayer.”

Security concerns were raised about the vast numbers of Afghans evacuated in the wake of the unilateral American withdrawal from the country, with the UK Border Force admitting last year that many Afghans were arriving in the country with forged identity documents.

Following reports of people on no-fly terror lists being evacuated into Britain — apparently in error — Breitbart London questioned the Home Office as to how many Afghans who were brought to Britain turned out to be either on watch lists or persons previously deported from Britain, but the Home Office replied that it was “not in the public interest” to reveal such data.

In addition to the massive influx of refugees through legal channels, the UK asylum system has already been strained by the migrant boat crisis in the English Channel, in which nearly all of the illegal aliens who arrive by people-smuggler boats from France claim asylum in the UK, despite coming from a safe European country where they should apply for asylum.

According to analysis conducted by the PA news agency, some 75,628 migrants have been recorded making the illegal journey, with another 856 arriving on Monday, marking the fifth straight day of illegal landings.

In addition to record levels of illegal immigration and soaring numbers or resettled refugees, legal immigration has also jumped to new highs, with Boris Johnson’s government handing out a record 1.1 million visas to foreigners last year.

While recently installed Home Secretary Suella Braverman has said that she would seek to finally fulfil the longstanding but never realised pledge from the Conservative Party to reduce net migration down to the tens of thousands. However, embattled Prime Minister Liz Truss has reportedly already sidelined the Brexiteer Home Secretary from the immigration debate, likely pointing to another Tory administration failing to fulfil the promise.

Responding this week to the failures of the Tories to take back control of the nation’s borders, Brexit leader Nigel Farage wrote in The Telegraph: “However much the posh boys in it convinced themselves that the Brexit vote in 2016 and the Red Wall gains in 2019 were about the concept of sovereignty, it is immigration that drove those results. Voters have been utterly betrayed. They are angry.

“The Tories will be wiped out at the next election, just as they were in 1997, and they thoroughly deserve it.”

Exclusive–Stein: ‘Final Straw’, New Evidence Shows Mayorkas Whipped the Border Patrol, Must Be Impeached

We have all seen the iconic photo allegedly showing a horse-mounted Border Patrol agent “whipping” a Haitian migrant on the banks of the Rio Grande on Sept. 24, 2021. We now all know that the report was false. No “whipping” or “strapping” ever occurred.

The Border Patrol agent captured in the photo was using split reins to better control his horse, and Paul Ratje just happened to click his camera as the motion of the animal caused the reins to flare out. As Ratje stated, “Some of the Haitian men started running, trying to go around the horses. I’ve never seen them whip anyone.”

The American public only found out later that, in Ratje’s own words, the photo was “misconstrued.” The White House and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas knew almost immediately. A Sept. 24, 2021 email obtained by the Heritage Foundation under a Freedom of Information Act request (actually, they had to sue DHS to get it) reveals that they knew the whipping narrative was a lie more than two hours before President Joe Biden publicly accused border agents of “strapping” migrants and vowed that “those people will pay.”

Shortly thereafter, Mayorkas, who was already aware that the accounts of the incident were very much in doubt, added more fuel to the fire by suggesting that racism played a role in the Border Patrol agents’ actions. “Our nation saw horrifying images that do not reflect who we are. We know that those images painfully conjured up the worst elements of our nation’s ongoing battle against systemic racism,” Mayorkas charged.

The “smoking gun” email reveals that far from being a “fog of war” incident, the administration’s incendiary, and knowingly false, response was the escalation of an actual war it began waging on Jan. 20, 2021 against border security and immigration enforcement. On this new front, the honorable men and women who are trying to enforce those laws also became targets. The email provides further evidence that Mayorkas, who took an oath to “well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office” is in contempt of that oath.

Following the orders of President Biden and acting on his own, Mayorkas has willfully spearheaded the purposeful abandonment of the laws of the United States and the successful policies of the previous administration to secure our borders and protect our people. On that basis alone, he must be brought up on impeachment charges in the next Congress.

In relentless pursuit of the Biden administration’s unconstitutional objective of nullifying the nation’s immigration and border enforcement statutes, the lives and careers of the three Border Patrol agents knowingly and falsely accused by both the president of the secretary were mere collateral damage.

More broadly, what Mayorkas has done has resulted in the death and endangerment of Americans, damage to property and communities across the border, loss of operational control of our border to dangerous cartels imprisoning thousands of migrants sold into human trafficking, and the fueling of deadly drug poisonings of thousands of Americans. This is clearly a violation of the oath Mayorkas took to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”

In spite of a comprehensive investigation of the incident by U.S. Customs and Border Protection concluding that there was “no evidence” that Border Patrol agents whipped or struck migrants in the course of carrying out their duties, neither President Biden nor Secretary Mayorkas has publicly conceded that their statements were erroneous, much less intentionally false. The agents continue to face unpaid suspensions and a black mark on their records. Nor are we likely to hear any sort of contrition from the White House because, as the email revealed in the FOIA suit confirms, much as in actual wars, truth has become a casualty in this administration’s war against the immigration laws they are seeking to undermine.

The Russian President rejected claims by his French counterpart that Moscow was stoking the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan

French President Emmanuel Macron's accusations that Russia is playing a negative role in the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict twist reality and were unacceptable, President Vladimir Putin has said.

“I believe that those statements show a lack of understanding of the nature of the conflict. There appears to be a lack of knowledge about the positions of the parties,” the Russian leader said on Wednesday during an international event in Astana. “Consequently, they sounded wrong and even twisted in a way and were unacceptable.”

Russia welcomes all efforts to mediate the conflict between Baku and Yerevan over Nagorno-Karabakh and will continue to play its part, Putin added. He invited the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan to meet in Moscow to discuss the differences between their nations.

This week, Macron claimed that Russia “played Azerbaijan’s game with Turkish complicity and came back to weaken Armenia, which was once a country it was close to.”

“You see what’s happening? It’s an effort by Russia to destabilize. It wants to create disorder in the Caucasus to destabilize all of us,” Macron told France 2 television on Wednesday.
