In Japanese it would be 八君, which is hachi-kun,
hinomaru 日 の 丸 is the word for sun.
maru just means round but can be taken as the connotation of being a "world unto itself" or self contained.
With regards to ships there is also the story of a space traveler "Hakudo Maru" who taught the Japanese how to make ships.
