Ukraine Receives 2 Billion Euros in Aid From EU - Ukrainian PM

Ukraine received 2 billion euros in financial assistance from the European Union on Tuesday, the first tranche of a 5-billion euro EU package following Russian's invasion, the Ukrainian prime minister said.

"The additional financial resource will help to cover urgent budgetary expenses, in particular for the social and humanitarian spheres," Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal wrote on the Telegram messaging app.

Microsoft lays off nearly 1,000 employees

Microsoft will lay off about 1,000 employees, the company confirmed Tuesday.

Although it is not confirmed if the layoffs are isolated in gaming divisions, employees who work for Xbox and other Microsoft-owned studios said they were being laid off, the Washington Post reported. Axios first reported the layoffs Monday evening.

Microsoft declined to disclose if any employees based in the Seattle area have been affected by the layoffs, although one Microsoft employee who tweeted about being laid off said they worked at the Redmond campus. In a statement, a company spokesperson said Microsoft makes structural adjustments as needed.

“Like all companies, we evaluate our business priorities on a regular basis,” the spokesperson said. “We will continue to invest in our business and hire in key growth areas in the year ahead.”

This is the second round of layoffs at Redmond-based Microsoft this year. The first was before its annual earnings report in July, when the company cut jobs citing structural adjustments. And since May, Microsoft has been slowing hiring due to a weakening economy. July’s layoffs were across several groups, including consulting and customer and partner solutions. It joined tech giants Meta and Google in slowing hiring.

The company’s workforce still grew overall. Microsoft had 221,000 employees as of June 30, compared to 181,000 last year.

Microsoft is in the process of acquiring video game-maker Activision Blizzard for $69 billion, pending U.K. regulatory approval. Microsoft is also the maker of Xbox and owns other studios such as Bethesda, a subsidiary of ZeniMax Media. It acquired ZeniMax last year for $7.5 billion in cash.

The company disclosed in an August antitrust filing that Sony’s PlayStation 4 outsold Xbox One by double.

Even though gaming saw a pandemic bump, video game companies including Nintendo, whose U.S. operations are based in Redmond, reported declining revenue this year.

Microsoft missed the mark on its fourth-quarter earnings report and reduced its revenue forecast. The company cited macroeconomic challenges such as a strengthening dollar, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and manufacturing shutdowns in China that hamstrung PC production as the source of its underperformance.

The Justice Department announced today that seven directors have resigned from corporate board positions in response to concerns by the Antitrust Division that their roles violated the Clayton Act’s prohibition on interlocking directorates. Section 8 of the Clayton Act (Section 8) prohibits directors and officers from serving simultaneously on the boards of competitors, subject to limited exceptions. Over the last several months, the Division announced its intent to reinvigorate Section 8 enforcement. This announcement is the first in a broader review of potentially unlawful interlocking directorates.

“Section 8 is an important, but underenforced, part of our antitrust laws. Congress made interlocking directorates a per se violation of the antitrust laws for good reason. Competitors sharing officers or directors further concentrates power and creates the opportunity to exchange competitively sensitive information and facilitate coordination – all to the detriment of the economy and the American public,” said Assistant Attorney General Jonathan Kanter of the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division. “The Antitrust Division is undertaking an extensive review of interlocking directorates across the entire economy and will enforce the law.”

By eliminating the opportunity to coordinate – explicitly or implicitly – through interlocking directorates, Section 8 is also intended to prevent other violations of the antitrust laws before they occur. In response to the Division’s competition concerns, the following companies and directors unwound the interlocks without admitting to liability:

Definitive Healthcare Corp. and ZoomInfo Technologies Inc. – Definitive and ZoomInfo operate go-to-market information and intelligence platforms used by third-party sales, marketing, operations, and recruiting teams across the United States. One director served simultaneously on the boards of both companies and resigned from Definitive’s board in response to the Division’s concerns about the alleged interlock.

Maxar Technologies Inc. and Redwire Corp. – Maxar and Redwire are providers of space infrastructure and communications products and services. One director served simultaneously on the boards of both companies and resigned from Redwire’s board in response to the Division’s concerns about the alleged interlock.

Littelfuse Inc. and CTS Corp. – Littelfuse and CTS are manufacturers of components and technologies for use in transportation applications, including sensors and switches for use in passenger and commercial vehicles. One director served simultaneously on the boards of both companies and resigned from CTS’s board in response to the Division’s concerns about the alleged interlock.

Skillsoft Corp. and Udemy Inc. – Skillsoft and Udemy are providers of online corporate education services. Two additional directors also represented Thoma Bravo on the Solarwinds board. All three directors resigned from Solarwinds’s board in response to the Division’s concerns about the alleged interlock.

On October 17, 2022, Orekhov was arrested in Germany and Uss was arrested in Italy, both at the request of the United States, and will undergo extradition proceedings.

High levels of radioactive waste discovered at Missouri elementary school

On Tuesday, a Missouri elementary school was forced to close its doors after radioactive waste was detected on campus.

Boston Chemical Data Corp. reported last week that high levels of radioactive contamination were discovered in the classrooms, ball fields, playground, kitchen, library, and HVAC system on the Jana Elementary School campus.

On the kindergarten playground, the investigation uncovered radioactive isotope lead-210 levels 22 times higher than naturally occurring radiation levels. Other locations throughout the school contained high levels of polonium and radium.

In a statement released on Friday, the district said it is aware of the report.

"Safety is always our top priority, and we are actively discussing the implications of the findings," the district stated. "The Board of Education will be consulting with attorneys and experts in this area of testing to determine the next steps."

The school board voted on Tuesday evening to close the campus and continue classes remotely until students can be transferred to another school in the district. Officials noted that it would take time to clean up the contamination properly.

The Missouri school opened in the 1970s and is located next to a former nuclear weapons plant. Boston Chemical Data Corp. was hired by law firms litigating a class-action lawsuit to test the property for contamination.

Decades ago, nuclear waste from World War II, as part of the Manhattan Project, was dumped near Lambert St. Louis International Airport. The wind and rain swept the contaminants into Coldwater Creek, which runs by the school.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, a division within the CDC, announced in 2019 that those exposed to the creek between the 1960s and 1990s might be at an increased risk of developing cancer.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers previously conducted a separate study and made the findings public in the summer. That investigation uncovered contaminants in a wooded area near the creek, but it did not find any radioactive material between that site and the school.

"The team has been coordinating with the Hazelwood School District regarding the status of sampling on the property," stated the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. "Any contamination posing a high risk or immediate threat to human health or the environment would be made a priority for remediation."

Phillip Moser, a program manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in St. Louis, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the report conducted by Boston Chemical was "incomplete and not consistent with the approved processes required to do an evaluation at one of our sites."

Lee Sobotka, Washington University professor of physics and chemistry, told KMOV that the study's presentation was "biased" and argued that there is no immediate risk to anyone at the school.

Christen Commuso with the Missouri Coalition for the Environment told the news outlet that the district should have done more to protect students.

"The reality is they knew in 2018, they knew the Army Corps was interested in testing this property, and at that point, they should have had a plan in place and ready to pull the trigger as soon as they got results," stated Commuso.

Another minister resigns from Truss’ government

Suella Braverman is the second member of the recently formed cabinet to depart, as calls for the PM’s resignation grow

UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman resigned on Wednesday. While Braverman officially stated that she stepped down due to a “technical infringement” of government rules, the news comes as Prime Minister Liz Truss faces record low popularity and calls from her own party to resign.

In a letter to Truss, Braverman said that she had sent an official document to a "trusted parliamentary colleague” using her personal email earlier that day. The document was a draft ministerial statement on migration that lawmakers had already been briefed on, Braverman explained, adding that sending it via her personal email nevertheless was “a technical infringement of the rules.”

“I have made a mistake, I accept responsibility; I resign,” she wrote.

After 43 days in her position, Braverman is the second member of Truss’ cabinet to leave within six weeks. Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng was fired last week after he and Truss unveiled a ‘mini budget’ that allocated tens of billions of pounds to sweeping tax cuts and ended up crashing the British pound.

Braverman faced larger controversies than a missent email during her tenure. Pressed by the opposition to defend a controversial Public Order Bill that would give police new powers to crack down on protests, Braverman on Tuesday wrote off her critics as a coalition of “Guardian-reading, tofo-eating wokerati.”

She also opposed Truss’ U-turn on her costly tax cuts, and pledged to dramatically cut immigration to the UK, at a time when Truss looks set to increase the number of foreigners arriving in a bid to stimulate the economy. According to The Guardian’s sources, Braverman was forced to resign by Kwarteng’s successor, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, whom they claim is “pulling the strings” as Truss scrambles to save her job.

Taking over from Boris Johnson amid an unprecedented cost-of-living crisis, Truss’ hugely criticized budget tanked her popularity, with an Observer poll earlier this month putting her approval rating at -47, a record low for a PM since the newspaper started measuring in the 1990s.

Conservative MPs are reportedly planning on ousting Truss, and a group of Tory lawmakers have publicly called on her to step down to avoid a landslide victory for the Labour Party when a general election is called. However, Truss said on Monday that she has no intention of resigning.

Annexed Ukrainian Regions Under Nuclear Protection, Kremlin Affirms

Update(1553ET): The Kremlin has continued its severe warnings which are aimed at NATO and Western backers of Ukraine, saying Wednesday that the four recently annexed territories in the east are under Russia's nuclear protection.

"All those territories are an inseparable part of Russia, and therefore all of them are under [our] protection," Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, specifically in response to a journalist's question over whether these new regions absorbed into the Russian federation fall under its nuclear umbrella. "Their security is guaranteed precisely at the same level as the rest of the country."

As CNBC reports, "The statement from the Kremlin came at a moment of acute tension, with both NATO and Russia expected to hold military exercises shortly to test the readiness of their nuclear weapons forces."

Some US officials and pundits, as well as NATO-linked think tanks, have continued to urge the Western alliance not to bow to Putin's "nuclear blackmail" - arguing that Ukrainian forces should continue receiving anything needed to stave off the Russian invasion. Kherson is now said to be in the Ukrainian counteroffensive's sights, as described below.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has authorized martial law for the four recently annexed territories of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia. This in effect gives emergency and extraordinary powers to the heads of these regions, with the Associated Press noting that "additional emergency powers" have also been given to "the heads of all regions of Russia" - though it's unclear precisely what this means.

The announcement comes the day after the Russian army said it is preparing to evacuate civilians from Kherson, which was the first Ukrainian city to fall to the invasion in February. "The entire administration is already moving today," Moscow-installed regional head Vladimir Saldo confirmed on Tuesday.

This evacuation order is being widely seen as an admission that the Ukrainian counteroffensive threatening occupied Kherson is gaining rapid momentum, so the Russians could be preparing a massive "scorched earth" bombardment in response. Reports estimate that Russian front lines have been beaten back some 20 to 30 kilometers in the last few weeks alone, and Russian commanders are alarmed they could be backed up against the Dnieper River that bisects Ukraine.

Clinton-Appointed Judge Claims Trump Signed Court Document That Knowingly Included False Voter Fraud Information

A Clinton-appointed judge on Wednesday said President Trump signed a court document that knowingly included false voter fraud information, Politico reported.

“The Court finds that these four documents are sufficiently related to and in furtherance of the obstruction crime,” US District Judge David Carter wrote in an 18-page opinion.

Judge Carter claimed that emails from Trump’s election lawyer, John Eastman “show that President Trump knew that the specific numbers of voter fraud were wrong but continued to tout those numbers, both in court and to the public.”

“President Trump, moreover, signed a verification swearing under oath that the incorporated, inaccurate numbers ‘are true and correct’ or ‘believed to be true and correct’ to the best of his knowledge and belief,” added Carter. “The emails show that President Trump knew that the specific numbers of voter fraud were wrong but continued to tout those numbers, both in court and to the public. The Court finds that these emails are sufficiently related to and in furtherance of a conspiracy to defraud the United States.”

Former President Donald Trump signed legal documents describing evidence of election fraud that he knew were false, a federal judge indicated on Wednesday.

U.S. District Court Judge David Carter wrote in an 18-page opinion that emails from attorney John Eastman, an architect of Trump’s last-ditch effort to subvert the 2020 election, needed to be turned over to the Jan. 6 select committee. Those emails, Carter wrote, “show that President Trump knew that the specific numbers of voter fraud were wrong but continued to tout those numbers, both in court and to the public.”

According to Carter, Trump and his attorneys alleged in a Dec. 4 filing in Georgia state court that Fulton County had improperly counted more than 10,000 votes of dead people, felons and unregistered voters. They then moved that proceeding to federal court and discussed whether to use the same statistics in that filing. In private correspondence, Trump’s lawyers noted that the then-president had resisted signing documents containing “specific numbers.” On Dec. 31, Eastman emailed other Trump lawyers that the numbers filed in state court were not accurate.

“Although the President signed a verification for [the state court filing] back on Dec. 1, he has since been made aware that some of the allegations (and evidence proffered by the experts) has been inaccurate,” Eastman wrote in an email to colleagues. “For him to sign a new verification with that knowledge (and incorporation by reference) would not be accurate.”

However, Trump and his lawyers opted to file the federal complaint using the same numbers that Eastman conceded were inaccurate.

Nineteen state AGs probe major banks over environmental, social and governance policies

The states are investigating Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase, Morgan Stanley and Wells Fargo.

Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt (R) on Wednesday announced he is leading a coalition of 19 states in a probe of six major banks over environmental, social and governance (ESG) investing policies and involvement with the United Nations’ Net-Zero Banking Alliance.

The states are investigating Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase, Morgan Stanley and Wells Fargo, all of which are Net-Zero Banking Alliance members and are required to set emissions reductions targets to net zero by 2050.

"We are leading a coalition investigating banks for ceding authority to the U.N., which will only result in the killing of American companies that don't subscribe to the woke, climate agenda," Schmitt said.

The six banks were served with civil investigative demands, similar to a subpoena, for information about their involvement with the UN and their environmental, social and governance practices.

"These financial institutions are entrusted with protecting a different type of green," said Arizona Attorney General Attorney General Mark Brnovich, whose state is part of the investigation.

While five states cannot be named due to state laws or confidentiality regulations, other states involved in the probe include Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

The announcement comes one day afterMissouri Treasurer Scott Fitzpatrick withdrew about $500 million in state pension funds from BlackRock over the investment company's "woke" agenda.

U.S. ATTORNEYS ANNOUNCE DISTRICT ELECTION OFFICERS FOR EASTERN & WESTERN DISTRICTS OF WISCONSIN

Wisconsin’s United States Attorneys, Gregory J. Haanstad of the Eastern District and Timothy M. O’Shea of the Western District, announced today that four Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs) will lead their offices’ efforts in connection with the Justice Department’s nationwide Election Day Program for the November 8, 2022, general election. AUSAs Christopher Ladwig and Philip Kovoor have been appointed to serve as District Election Officers (DEOs) for the Eastern District, and AUSAs Daniel Graber and Meredith Duchemin have been appointed to serve as DEOs for the Western District. In that capacity, these AUSAs are responsible for overseeing their Districts’ handling of election day complaints of voting rights concerns, threats of violence to election officials or staff, and election fraud, in consultation with Justice Department Headquarters in Washington.

U.S. Attorney Haanstad said, “Every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination and to have that vote counted in a fair and free election. Similarly, election officials and staff must be able to serve without being subject to unlawful threats of violence. The Department of Justice will always work tirelessly to protect the integrity of the election process.”

The Department of Justice has an important role in deterring and combatting discrimination and intimidation at the polls, threats of violence directed at election officials and poll workers, and election fraud. The Department will address these violations wherever they occur. The Department’s longstanding Election Day Program furthers these goals and also seeks to ensure public confidence in the electoral process by providing local points of contact within the Department for the public to report possible federal election law violations.

Federal law protects against such crimes as threatening violence against election officials or staff, intimidating or bribing voters, buying and selling votes, impersonating voters, altering vote tallies, stuffing ballot boxes, and marking ballots for voters against their wishes or without their input. It also contains special protections for the rights of voters, and provides that they can vote free from interference, including intimidation, and other acts designed to prevent or discourage people from voting or voting for the candidate of their choice. The Voting Rights Act protects the right of voters to mark their own ballot or to be assisted by a person of their choice (where voters need assistance because of disability or inability to read or write in English).

U.S. Attorney O’Shea stated that, “Voting is the cornerstone of American democracy. We all must ensure that those who are entitled to the franchise can exercise it if they choose, and that those who seek to corrupt it are brought to justice. In order to respond to complaints of voting rights concerns and election fraud during the upcoming election, and to ensure that such complaints are directed to the appropriate authorities, AUSAs/DEOs Ladwig, Kovoor, Graber, and Duchemin will be on duty while the polls are open.”

Former Congressional Candidate Sentenced for Wire Fraud and Falsification of Records

A former U.S. Congressional candidate was sentenced today to 30 months in prison for his scheme to use COVID-19 relief funds for personal expenditures and filing a false report with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) by concealing thousands of dollars of in-kind contributions by employees.

Nicholas Jones, 36, of Boise, Idaho, pleaded guilty to wire fraud and falsification of records on June 1. In addition to the prison sentence, Jones was also ordered to pay a $100,000 fine and $90,564.84 in restitution.

According to court documents, Jones was a small business owner who applied for and received $753,600 in COVID-19 relief funds, primarily from the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program. Despite certifying that the funds would only be used for business-related expenditures, Jones used a significant portion of these funds for personal expenses, including car payments, life insurance policies, and political advertisements.

According to court documents, in 2020, Jones ran as a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives and told employees of his small business that they could continue to be paid their normal wages if they worked on his congressional campaign. Employees reported to work on behalf of Jones’s congressional campaign and were paid thousands of dollars in wages through Jones’s small business including, in part, with funds Jones had received as part of a PPP loan. After losing the primary election, Jones caused his campaign committee to file a campaign finance report with the FEC that omitted any in-kind contributions from any entity or individual other than Jones, including the thousands of dollars of in-kind contributions to his campaign in the form of employee time and work.

Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite, Jr. of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Josh Hurwit for the District of Idaho, and Special Agent in Charge Dennis Rice of the FBI Salt Lake City Field Office made the announcement.

The FBI investigated the case.

Columbia County Man Indicted For Threatening The President, A Congressman And A Federal Judge

SCRANTON- The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced that Robert Maverick Vargo, age 25, of Berwick, Pennsylvania, was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of threatening the President of the United States, interstate communications with a threat, and influencing a federal official by threat.

According to United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam, the indictment alleges that on October 11, 2022, United States Congressman Bennie Thompson’s office received a letter from Vargo at the Rayburn House Office Building, Washington DC, containing threats to kill Representative Thompson, his family, President Joseph Biden, and U.S. District Court Judge Robert D. Mariani alluding to “Anthrax,” and containing what appeared to be a white powder.

Representative Thompson is serving his fifteenth term as the Congressman representing the second Congressional District in Mississippi. Representative Thompson is the Chairman of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol.

The letter specifically referenced Congressman Thompson’s role with the January 6 Select Committee and states “Im going to kill you! I will make you feel the rest of our pain & suffering. There is nowhere or nobody who can keep you from me. I am going to kill you & those you love. I promise you that I will keep my promise until the day of my death.” The letter goes on to state, “You & Joe Biden soon will face death for the wrongs you’ve done to US.”

Investigation by the U.S. Capitol Police Hazardous Material Response Team determined that the white powder accompanying the threats did not pose an immediate public safety hazard. It was determined through the investigation that the threatening letter and substance was sent by Vargo from the Luzerne County Correctional Facility in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

The case is being investigated by the U.S. Capitol Police, Protective Service Bureau and the U.S. Secret Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jenny P. Roberts is prosecuting the case.

The total maximum penalty under federal law for these offenses is 25 years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine. A sentence following a finding of guilt is imposed by the Judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.

Indictments are only allegations. All persons charged are presumed to be innocent unless and until found guilty in court.

Two Florida Medical Study Coordinators Sentenced in Connection with Scheme to Falsify Clinical Trial Data

MIAMI - A federal judge sentenced two Florida women to prison in connection with their participation in a conspiracy to falsify clinical trial data.

Senior U.S. District Judge Donald L. Graham of the Southern District of Florida sentenced Analay Rico, 37, of Fort Lauderdale, to 40 months in prison and Daylen Diaz, 44, of Miami, to 24 months in prison. The court also ordered Rico and Diaz to pay approximately $2.1 million in restitution.

According to court documents, Rico worked as a lead study coordinator for a clinical research firm based in Miami called Tellus Clinical Research (Tellus). Diaz was a research assistant and assistant study coordinator at Tellus. As part of their plea agreements, Rico and Diaz admitted that they agreed with others to defraud clients paying for clinical trial work intended to evaluate treatments for various medical conditions, including opioid dependency, irritable bowel syndrome and diabetic nephropathy. Among other things, Rico and Diaz admitted they falsified data to make it appear as though subjects were participating in the trials when, in truth, they were not.

“It’s disgraceful when a criminal preys upon patients in a health care setting,” said U.S. Attorney Juan Antonio Gonzalez for the Southern District of Florida. “We will prosecute perpetrators who do to the fullest extent of the law.”

“Clinical trials are essential in determining the safety and effectiveness of drug treatments,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Brian M. Boynton of the Justice Department’s Civil Division. “The Justice Department will continue to work with its law enforcement partners to prosecute anyone who intentionally falsifies this critical data for personal profit.”

“Reliable and accurate data from clinical trials is the cornerstone of FDA’s evaluation of a new drug,” said FDA Assistant Commissioner for Criminal Investigations Catherine A. Hermsen. “Compromised clinical trial data could impact the agency’s decisions about the safety and effectiveness of the drug under review. We will continue to monitor, investigate and bring to justice those whose actions may subvert the FDA approval process and endanger the public health.”

Three co-conspirators previously pleaded guilty and were sentenced for their roles in the scheme. Eduardo Navarro, 53, of Miami, was sentenced to 46 months imprisonment; Duniel Tejeda, 36, of Clewiston, Florida, was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment; and Nayade Varona, 51, was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment. Trial against three remaining defendants charged by indictment in connection with Tellus, Dr. Martin Valdes, 66, of Coral Gables, Florida, Fidalgis Font, 55, of Miami, and Julio Lopez, 55, of Hialeah, Florida, is currently set for Jan. 10, 2023.

The Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Criminal Investigations is investigating the case.

Trial Attorneys Lauren M. Elfner, Joshua D. Rothman and Wandaly Fernandez Garcia of the Civil Division’s Consumer Protection Branch are prosecuting the case. Assistant United States Daren Grove is handling asset forfeiture.

An indictment contains mere allegations and defendants are innocent unless and until found guilty in a court of law.

Fetterman cleared by doc who donated to campaign after NBC interview fiasco

Pennsylvania Democratic Senate candidate John Fetterman released a letter Wednesday from a doctor who claimed the commonwealth’s lieutenant governor has “no work restrictions” after suffering a stroke in May — but failed to disclose he donated hundreds of dollars to the candidate after becoming his primary care physician.

Dr. Clifford Chen wrote in the letter, dated Oct. 15, that Fetterman was “recovering well from his stroke and his health has continued to improve” — and that he “can work full duty in public office.”

What Chen did not say, and what Federal Election Commission records show, is that he donated to Fetterman’s campaign on at least four separate occasions.

The first donation from Chen, of $500, was made back in June 2021, 11 months before Fetterman suffered his stroke in the same week he won a convincing victory in the Democratic primary.

So-called "child identification" kits will soon be distributed to all Texas public school and open-enrollment charter school students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The law states that the purpose of the kits is to help local and federal law enforcement locate "missing or trafficked" children, but critics believe that the kits are instead intended to help investigators identify human remains in the event of another school shooting.

The kits provide a means for parents or guardians to collect DNA samples and fingerprints from their children. The kit also calls for a current photo. Those parents and guardians wishing to utilize the free kit may then keep it in their possession in case an emergency arises.

The same kits cost $9.95 at the National Child Identification Program website, and participation in the program is entirely voluntary. Kits are sent home in accordance with a law passed in 2021, though similar kits were also distributed in fall 2000 and 2006/2007 with little public backlash.

Now in 2022, some concerned parents have speculated that schools are sending the kits home once again after two horrific school shootings occurred within the state in recent years. In 2018, a school shooting at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas, about an hour south of Houston, left eight students and two teachers dead. Then just five months ago, a maniac managed to murder 19 fourth graders and two teachers at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, before a Border Patrol agent breached the door and shot him to death.

President Trump to Be Awarded the Theodor Herzl Medallion by the Zionist Organization of America

Newsmax reported today that President Trump is finally being recognized for his work in strengthening U.S. – Israel relations.

The Zionist Organization of America, which works to strengthen U.S.-Israel relations and combat anti-Israel bias, announced last Friday that it will award the “rarely given” Theodor Herzl Medallion to former President Donald Trump.

In an email sent to its members, the ZOA said it was honoring the former president “for being the best friend Israel ever had in the White House.”

Dr. Miriam Adelson, physician and billionaire, will present Trump’s award on Nov. 13 at the Zionist Organization’s national awards dinner in New York City. Adelson will also honor House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., with ZOA’s Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Defender of Israel Award.

Report into COVID-19 response asserts 'mistakes were made'

Disadvantaged and vulnerable people "bore the brunt" of Australia's COVID-19 pandemic response, according to a report.

The privately funded review has condemned Australia's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, arguing that government health measures and policies lacked transparency and further entrenched existing inequalities.

"Governments and public servants were making decisions in a fog of uncertainty," the review said.

"But, looking back, we are persuaded that significant mistakes were made."

It found disadvantaged or vulnerable groups — such as low socio-economic families, people with disabilities, aged care residents, migrant communities, women and children — were disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 policies.

The review was funded by three philanthropic organisations: Andrew Forrest's Minderoo Foundation, the Paul Ramsay Foundation and the John and Miriam Wylie Foundation.

It was led by Western Sydney University Chancellor Peter Shergold, along with businesswoman and former University of Wollongong Chancellor Jillian Broadbent, University of Queensland Chancellor Peter Varghese and 2021 Young Australian of the Year Isobel Marshall.

It received submissions from more than 350 people, including health experts, public servants, economists, business groups and community organisations.

The review was sharply critical of taxpayer-funded economic policies — such as JobKeeper — arguing big businesses were favoured while casual and temporary workers were left without financial support.

"Failing to include a claw-back mechanism for businesses supported by JobKeeper was a design fault," it said. "It was fiscally irresponsible and unfair when other groups in society were excluded from economic supports."

It also argued that many of Australia's border closures and lockdowns were the result of policy failures in quarantine and contact tracing, and could have been avoided.

"Rules were too often formulated and enforced in ways that lacked fairness and compassion," it said.

"Businesspeople were often allowed to travel across borders whilst those wanting to visit dying loved ones or newborn family members were not afforded a similar opportunity."

The review argued that schools should have stayed open, particularly once it became clear they were not high-transmission environments.

"For children and parents — particularly women — we failed to get the balance right, between protecting health and imposing long-term costs on education, mental health, the economy and workforce outcomes," it said.

"The social and economic costs were likely significant."

It also warned of the "perils of overreach" when it came to implementing and enforcing COVID-19 public health measures.

The review found many Australians — particularly those living under strict and extended lockdowns in Melbourne and Western Sydney — felt they were "being protected by being policed".

"There were too many instances in which government regulations and their enforcement went beyond what was required to control the virus," it argued.

"Such overreach undermined public trust and confidence in the institutions that are vital to effective crisis response."

It claims to be apolitical and states that its terms of reference "were not dictated by a politician".

The review states its submissions were received voluntarily and participants were given "complete confidentiality so they were able to speak freely".
