Slave Garden

So you're a plantation owner back in the day

You have a bunch of slaves

And your slaves are not real happy about being slaves

Being a slave sucks

The more that slaves think about being slaves and how much it sucks, the angrier they get about their situation

But killing them if they cause you trouble or try to break free just leaves you with fewer slaves

There must be a better way

So you give your slaves some of your own land to farm

A remote, unprofitable patch of land for which you have no use

A small lot where your slaves can grow some extra food for themselves and their families

Perhaps you even allow them to sell any surplus and keep the proceeds

And of course they gratefully accept

Some of the more productive slaves could even build some wealth and independence

Except now they can't leave

because they can't take their piece of farmland with them

Bill Clinton and Barack Hussein Obama

Kim Jong-il and Kim Il-sung

In their slave gardens

Enjoying the trappings bestowed upon them by their apparently benevolent owners

Figureheads playing their roles

Building wealth

But unable to leave

Lest it all be taken away
