Boris Johnson pulls out of UK PM contest
The ex-prime minister explained that he hadnât managed to find a ânational interestâ solution with other candidates
Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has pulled out of the Tory party leadership race, thus paving a path to the UK premiership for his former chancellor Rishi Sunak, currently the contestâs favorite.
In a statement released on Sunday evening, Johnson said that he had cleared âthe very high hurdle of 102 nominationsâ from MPs and could âindeed be back in Downing Street on Friday,â and would be âwell placedâ to bring his party a victory at the 2024 general election.
"But in the course of the last days I have sadly come to the conclusion that this would simply not be the right thing to do. You can't govern effectively unless you have a united party in parliament,â Johnson explained.
He revealed that he had reached out to both current leadership candidates â his former chancellor Rishi Sunak and his former defense secretary Penny Mordaunt â hoping to âcome together in the national interest.â However, the former head of government explained, âa way of doing thisâ has not been found.
âTherefore, I am afraid the best thing is that I do not allow my nomination to go forward and commit my support to whoever succeeds,â he announced.
Johnsonâs statement came on a day when some of his long-time allies, including Suella Braverman, who'd served as an Attorney General in his government, backed Sunak.
The deadline for entering the Conservative Party leadership contest will pass at 2pm on Monday. Sunak is now leading, with more than 140 supporters publicly backing him, while Penny Mordaunt has just over 20 endorsements.
If Mordaunt or any other candidate also reaches the 100 votes threshold, the race will go to an electronic vote by Conservative Party members. If Sunak remains the only candidate to pass the benchmark, he will be declared the next Prime Minister on Monday.
Johnsonâs decision to pull out from the race will apparently come as a disappointment for many members of the Tory party. A recent YouGov survey revealed that 32% of respondents would like Johnson to return as prime minister, despite a series of scandals and cabinet resignations that ultimately precipitated his departure.
Sunak, according to the poll, significantly lags his former boss in popularity: only 23% of 530 Tory respondents voiced support for him.

Military Whistleblowers Sound Alarm on âDevastatingâ Consequences of Pentagonâs Vaccine Mandate
Whistleblower service members are speaking out on behalf of thousands of service members whose careers have been jeopardized for objecting to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austinâs 2021 military COVID-19 vaccine mandate. Theyâve expressed concern over the vaccine mandateâs legality, as well as its health effects.
Alongside three members of the Armed Forces, attorney and former Marine Corps Capt. Dale Saran participated in a live-streamed military whistleblowers press conference on Oct. 18 to highlight concerns about the military vaccine mandate. The video has garnered more than 40,000 views, to date.
Saran once defended service members involved in a fight against the Pentagonâs mandatory anthrax vaccination program. He is also challenging the Pentagonâs vaccine mandate in a class-action lawsuit. He noted in the press conference the current case bears striking similarities to the legal battle against the anthrax vaccine program almost 20 years ago.
Saran said that âat the heart of most of the legal claimsâ against todayâs military COVID-19 vaccine mandate is the fact that âthere is no licensed vaccineâ available to service members.
The attorney and many service members argue that the Pentagonâs vaccine mandate, which covers âCOVID-19 vaccines that receive full licensure from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in accordance with FDA-approved labeling and guidance,â does not apply to any vaccines issued under emergency use authorization (EUA), such as the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.
They say that the military has mainly offered service members EUA Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, rather than the FDA-approved Cominarty vaccine, and thus cannot compel personnel to take them. They also argue that a Pentagon policy that says the Cominarty and EUA Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines are interchangeable is illegal.
Saran said the continued push to vaccinate service members is âdone just to break them.â
At the press conference, Air Force First Lieutenant John Bowes, an F-16 student pilot, pointed out various reports that have been sent to congress concerning the military vaccine mandateâs effect on military readiness and the health of service members.
âWe were there to advocate for the 80,000 service members who arenât being heard,â Bowes told The Epoch Times after the conference.
âWeâre making a call for help to both Congress and the American people to stand up for us and give us some protection from the Department of Defense so that we can continue to serveâwhich is all we want to do,â he said.
The press conference allowed active-duty service members and âan exceptional lawyerâ to speak out against the military vaccine mandate, Bowes said. And according to him, each is risking their career in order to bring awareness to âthe absolutely dire problem that weâre facing right now.â
Like Saran, Bowes considers the current COVID-19 vaccine mandate to be âalmost a carbon copy of what happened with anthrax nearly two decades ago.â He added that âanthrax ended up being ruled as a vaccine that couldnât be forced on service members because it was experimental.â
âItâs shocking to see this exact same thing happen 20 years later.â
Bowes added that the whistleblower service members involved in the press conference âwill continue to respectfully bring up the devasting consequences [of the vaccine mandate] to both national security and the health and safety of our force at every opportunity they are given.â
The officer emphasized that his views do not reflect those of the Department of Defense or Air Force.
Continued Concern
Navy Cmdr. Olivia Degenkolb, who has served for 20 years, also participated in the press conference.
Early on, Degenkolb had âsignificant concernsâ regarding the vaccineâs effect on fertility and its carcinogenicity prior to the military vaccine mandate, which she said were dismissed by military medical staff, she told The Epoch Times, emphasizing that her views do not represent those of the Department of Defense or Navy.
She pointed out that the Comirnaty package insert reads: âCOMIRNATY has not been evaluated for the potential to cause carcinogenicity, genotoxicity, or impairment of male fertility. In a developmental toxicity study in rats with COMIRNATY there were no vaccine-related effects on female fertilityâ.
In addition to health concerns, Degenkolb also raised concerns with military leadership about the legality of mandating EUA products, as well as the legality of compelling COVID-19 testing, and mask wearing.
âThese EUA products are not formally licensed by the FDA and by federal law, they cannot be mandated,â she said.
She said the Navy ignored those concerns.
