Canadian Credit Union to Launch Visa Carbon Credit Card that Counts Your Carbon Footprint

The Vancouver City Savings Credit Union, known as Vancity, has teamed up with ecolytiq, one of the climate engagement technology firms in Europe, to provide the first Visa Carbon Counter in Canada.

“Vancity is taking another step in its commitment to climate action. It will be the first financial institution in Canada to offer its individual and business members a way to estimate the CO2 emissions that come from their purchases,” the company said in a statement.

“Starting in the new year, every Vancity Visa credit card holder will be able to track the estimated carbon emissions of their credit card purchases. Members will be able to see how their monthly tally compares to the national average, or which credit card purchases have the highest environmental cost,” the company said.

“We know many Vancity members are looking for ways to reduce the impact they have on the environment, particularly when it comes to the emissions that cause climate change,” said Jonathan Fowlie, Vancity’s Chief External Relations Officer who oversees the credit union’s impact and climate efforts.

“As a member-owned financial cooperative, we believe it is our job to do everything we can to help, especially when it comes to the decisions people make with their money. This tool will equip Vancity Visa credit cardholders with valuable information on their purchases and enable them to connect their daily spending decisions to the change they want to see in the world.”

In 2019, the Swedish fin-tech company Doconomy partnered with Mastercard to create the world’s credit card with a carbon limit.

“Doconomy is now launching the world’s first credit card with a carbon footprint limit, DO Black. The launch of this premium card marks the first milestone in the support that Doconomy provides to the UN Climate Change secretariat (UNFCCC) to encourage global climate action. DO Black not only helps users track and measure CO2 emissions associated with their purchases but also puts a limit on the climate impact of their spending. Users can now sign-up to register interest for DO Black,” Mastercard said in a statement.

Former US military pilot arrested on China ties – media

The man’s detention comes as Beijing has reportedly hired veteran British pilots as instructors

A former American military pilot and flight instructor was arrested last week in Australia, and now faces extradition to the US, Reuters reported on Tuesday. It is unclear what kind of charges the man is facing, but sources say he was detained due to his past work in China.

Daniel Edmund Duggan was arrested on Friday by local police in rural New South Wales, Reuters reported, citing court records and police sources. Duggan was denied bail, and is now facing “formal extradition proceedings,” the news agency claimed.

A spokesman for the Office of the Attorney General in Washington confirmed that an individual was arrested in New South Wales on Friday “pursuant to a request from the United States of America,” but did not name the individual as Duggan. An “aviation source” told Reuters that Duggan was wanted by the FBI due to his work in China.

Duggan, described in the report as a “former US citizen” and current citizen of Australia, served as a pilot and flight instructor in the US Marine Corps for a decade, before moving to Australia and starting a business taking tourists on flights in fighter jets.

Duggan reportedly moved to China in 2014 and sold his Australian business shortly afterwards. He founded "a comprehensive aviation consultancy company” in 2017, and worked in Qingdao, China until the firm’s dissolution in 2020, according to his LinkedIn profile.

It is unclear whether the US has accused Duggan of working with the Chinese government or military, or whether espionage charges are among those being considered.

News of the pilot’s arrest came days after multiple Western media outlets reported China’s hiring of some 30 veteran British military pilots to teach trainees in the People’s Liberation Army. The practice is legal, but British defense officials are still concerned enough that they issued a “threat alert,” warning current and former pilots to steer clear of the recruitment scheme.

Beijing reportedly pays the pilots $270,000 a year, around twice as much as the Royal Air Force pays its most senior commanders, and four times what it pays an experienced squadron leader. The RAF has also reportedly restricted the hiring of white male pilots to meet diversity targets, and shortages of aircraft and instructors are pushing qualified fliers into jobs in the private sector.

Government-funded Lab in Maryland Plans to Develop Hybrid Monkeypox Strain that is More Lethal than Previous Strains

Last week, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced to launch an investigation into the new COVID strain research being conducted at Boston University, which has shown an 80% fatality rate in infected mice.

This comes after the top NIH director admitted that she only learned of the details from the news media reports.

Dr. Emily Erbelding, a director at the NIAID division of microbiology and infectious diseases, admitted that she was unaware of the details of the research.

She said the researchers at Boston University did not clear the work with the NIAID, making the research unauthorized.

Erbedling claimed the university did not inform NIAID.

Now, American scientists are experimenting with another virus just weeks before the midterm.

New reports from Science revealed that virus experts at a government lab in Bethesda, Maryland, are planning to conduct an experiment to swap genes between two strains of monkeypox, one that causes more severe sickness and the other that causes large rashes and flu-like symptoms.

Why is this even being created?

According to the report, the virologists plan to test to determine if the mutation between two strains makes the virus more deadly to mice.

Researchers are hopeful that if they can figure out how certain genes contribute to the severity of monkeypox, they might create more effective treatments and vaccines.

Some scientists express concern over the planned experiments. Epidemiologist and the director of the Center for Health Security at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, Thomas Inglesby, worry that an “epidemic with substantially more lethality” could happen if a more dangerous strain of monkeypox manages to break out of a high-containment facility at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

Because of the possibility that these experiments could start a disastrous pandemic, Inglesby and other scientists have argued that the experiments should undergo a special review normally reserved for the most high-risk U.S. government-funded research projects.

“It’s not clear that the rules apply to the proposed study. In a 2018, a safety panel determined it was exempt from review. Monkeypox did not meet the definition of a “potential pandemic pathogen” (PPP), the panel decided, because it didn’t spread easily. Now, with monkeypox widespread, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is planning to reexamine the work, but it still might not qualify as “enhancing” a PPP, the agency says. That’s because the study will swap natural mutations, not create new ones, so it is not expected to create a monkeypox strain more virulent than the two already known,” Science reported.

Adidas drops Kanye West after his anti-Semitic outbursts

Adidas severed ties with Kanye West on Tuesday after facing mounting pressure to do so in the wake of the rapper’s bizarre anti-Semitic outbursts and public meltdowns.

The apparel brand, which announced last week its 10-year relationship with West was “under review,” said it “does not “tolerate antisemitism and any other sort of hate speech.”

“Ye’s recent comments and actions have been unacceptable, hateful and dangerous, and they violate the company’s values of diversity and inclusion, mutual respect and fairness,” the company said in a statement Tuesday.

Adidas is the latest high-profile brand, including Balenciaga and Vogue, to cut ties or reconsider their relationships with the rapper-turned-designer following his slew of controversial remarks in recent weeks.

The shoemaker’s decision came after it faced heavy backlash for staying silent when the outrage against West first erupted.

Some accused the retailer of putting profits over ethics for not publicly condemning the 45-year-old’s string of anti-Semitic tweets.

The #boycottadidas hashtag also started trending at one point.

West, who has legally changed his name to Ye, has been releasing his Yeezy sneaker lines with Adidas since 2015.

Upcoming Yeezy collections, which are set to retail between $200 and $300, are already scheduled to drop later this year.

Ending the partnership and the production of Yeezy branded products, as well as stopping all payments to Ye and his companies, will “have a short-term negative impact” of up to $250 million on Adidas’ net income this year, the company told Reuters, partially as the Christmas quarter usually spawns greater demand.

John Kerry Pushes For Divestment From Oil And Gas, Contradicting Biden’s Statements

President Joe Biden’s climate envoy, John Kerry, said during a Tuesday speech that the world cannot stop the “climate crisis” without “dramatically” reducing investment in fossil fuels, contradicting the president’s previous call for increased investment in the oil and gas industry.

Biden told oil and gas producers to use their “record profits” to increase production and refining capacity during a speech he gave on Oct. 19. Kerry said that the world cannot hit its emissions reduction targets unless private companies, governments and international banks divest from oil and gas, claiming that for every $1 that is invested in green energy, $1.10 is invested in fossil fuels.

“The math and science unequivocally make clear, we just can’t hit our [emissions] targets unless we dramatically change that ratio,” Kerry stated.

Kerry said that some private financial firms were beginning to backslide on the “net-zero” emissions, commitments they made at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference and urged firms to ramp up their efforts to invest in green energy instead of fossil fuels. However, Biden told oil companies to increase production in order to bring down high gas prices and energy costs for Americans, a move that would require increased investment in the industry.

“You’re sitting on record profits … and we’re giving you more certainty, so you can act now to increase oil production now,” Biden said after announcing his administration’s plan to buy back oil from companies to refill the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

The White House climate envoy said that financial institutions need to do “even more” to meet emissions targets and prevent future “climate disasters.” Kerry also stated that Multilateral Development Banks like the World Bank were needed to fund green energy initiatives all over the globe.

“We need a greater synergy between public and private finance … it’s gotta happen,” he said.

The White House did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Traffickers Force Migrants into Sex Work to Pay Smuggling Debts in USA

Sheriff’s office detectives in Florida arrested two people for allegedly smuggling migrants into the U.S. and forcing them to work in sex clubs to pay off their debt. The investigation led to the arrests of the two and the rescue of eight women.

“These horrific acts of sex trafficking are among the most depraved crimes we have seen in a long time and highlight how criminals are taking advantage of Biden’s open border to advance their illicit trade,” Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody said on Tuesday. “I applaud the swift, courageous actions of Sheriff Chronister’s deputies and ensure my Statewide Prosecutors will hold the traffickers accountable in court for what they did to these eight women.”

Prosecutors say that Amet Maqueira De La Cal, 34, and Rosalia Leonard Garcia, 29, smuggled eight women into the United States and trafficked them to Hillsborough County, Florida, where they allegedly forced them to work in adult entertainment clubs to pay off their debts. The victims told investigators they owed as much as $60,000 each for being illegally brought to the United States.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said his department received a tip that a woman smuggled from Cuba into the United States was forced to perform commercial sex acts to pay off her debt to the smugglers, the Tampa Bay Times reported. Investigators found the woman and seven others being forced to work in “adult entertainment clubs” in Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties.

Detectives followed seven of the women as they were being escorted to the International Plaza mall by one of the suspects, the sheriff stated. The investigators rescued the seven women and obtained a search warrant for two properties where the eighth woman was being held captive.

Investigators say the alleged sex traffickers held five women in one room and three in another room. Neither room had working lights and the women all shared a bathroom.

The two suspects face 47 counts of human trafficking, human smuggling, false imprisonment, and RICO violations. Maqueira De La Cal also faces a charge of grand theft with a firearm.

Jail records reveal both suspects are being held in jail facilities with Hillsborough County without bond.

“This is one of the worst trafficking cases that I have seen,” Florida Attorney General Moody told reporters. “In this case, I am extraordinarily proud of the brave, courageous women who lived through hell for months, not knowing if they would be able to get out of that situation.”

World Bank Disburses Additional $500 Million to Ukraine

The World Bank said on Monday it had disbursed an additional $500 million to help Ukraine meet urgent spending needs created by Russia's Feb. 24 invasion and the ongoing war.

The financing by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the bank's main lending arm, was supported by $500 million in loan guarantees from Britain that were announced on Sept. 30, the bank said.

It comes on the eve of a recovery conference taking place in Berlin on Tuesday, where national leaders, development experts and CEOs will discuss how to rebuild Ukraine after Russia's invasion, now entering its ninth month.

“The Russian invasion continues to cause massive destruction of Ukraine’s infrastructure – including water, sanitation, and electricity networks – just as winter is approaching, further endangering Ukrainian people,” World Bank Group President David Malpass said in a statement.

“The new portion of financing disbursed today will be used to maintain essential government services. We stand firmly to support the Ukrainian people as they face this unparalleled crisis.”

Something weird going on with JFK assassination files; Biden being sued over it

A major online database of JFK assassination records is suing President Joe Biden and the National Archives in an effort to uncover all remaining details about the former president’s murder that have been kept secret for decades. The lawsuit comes after Biden delayed the release of the files.

NBC reported that the remaining secret files on the fourth assassination of a U.S. president are among the most sensitive in the U.S. government. The mysterious details surrounding JFK’s assassination still draw debunkers and truth-seekers almost 60 years later.

The suit alleges that the president defied a legal deadline by delaying the release of some 16,000 records, the last batch of JFK documents to be made public under a 1992 law.

All of those documents were legally required to be revealed by October 2017, but then-President Donald Trump delayed the release of some until October 2021, as reported by the Washington Post. When Biden faced Trump’s deadline, he delayed it again to Dec. 15, 2022.

In the complaint filing, the Mary Ferrell Foundation, a large database of primary source material on the 1963 assassination, says Biden’s delay and the National Archives’ compliance with it violated requirements of the President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992.

“It’s high time that the government got its act together and obeyed the spirit and the letter of the law,” said Jefferson Morley, vice president of the Mary Ferrell Foundation, adding, “This is about our history and our right to know it.”

Historians, activists and Kennedy family members alike expressed support for the lawsuit to NBC.

“It’s bizarre. It’s been almost 60 years since my uncle’s death,” said Robert Kennedy Jr. “What are they hiding?”

Among JFK aficionados, the documents aren’t widely thought to hold new bombshells or smoking guns, NBC reported. Instead, they are expected to reveal secret Cold War operations and details of then-Attorney General Robert Kennedy’s anti-Mafia crusade, which preceded his own assassination.

Judicial Watch: Court Rejects Democratic Party Intervention in Lawsuit Challenging Illinois Vote-Counting for Two Weeks after Election Day

Judicial Watch announced today that a federal court rejected a motion by Democratic Party of Illinois to intervene as a defendant in Judicial Watch’s lawsuit challenging an Illinois election law permitting mail-in ballots to be received as long as two weeks after Election Day.

The ruling and opinion come in the federal lawsuit Judicial Watch filed on behalf of Congressman Mike Bost and two other registered Illinois voters to prevent state election officials from extending Election Day for 14 days beyond the date established by federal law (Rep.Michael J. Bost, Laura Pollastrini, and Susan Sweeney v. The Illinois State Board of Elections and Bernadette Matthews (No. 1:22-cv-02754)).

In the court’s ruling and opinion on the Democratic Party of Illinois motion to intervene, U.S. District Judge John F. Kness held that its participation would “delay this time-sensitive case:”

[Democratic Party of Illinois] cannot meet its burden to show that its interests will not be adequately represented by the parties to the case. As a result, [Democratic Party of Illinois] is not entitled to intervene as of right. Separately, because allowing [Democratic Party of Illinois] to intervene would threaten to delay this time-sensitive case further, the Court, in its discretion, denies [Democratic Party of Illinois] motion seeking permission to intervene as a party under Rule 24(b). Accordingly, the Court denies DPI’s motion in its entirety.

(The Democratic Party of Illinois is represented by the Elias Law Group, whose founding partner is Marc Elias, the controversial lawyer for Hillary Clinton’s campaign.)

Federal law defines Election Day as “the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of every even-numbered year.” The initial complaint states:

Despite Congress’ clear statement regarding a single national Election Day, Illinois has expanded Election Day by extending by 14 days the date for receipt and counting of vote-by-mail ballots

Judicial Watch points out that the current Illinois election law allows vote-by-mail ballots received up to 14 days “after the polls close on Election Day” to be counted as if they were cast and received on or before Election Day. Illinois law also provides that “[e]ven vote-by-mail ballots without postmarks shall be counted if received up to 14 calendar days after Election Day if the ballots are dated on or before Election Day.”

Judicial Watch’s lawsuit notes:

The Board … advised that the number of ballots received after Election Day through November 17, 2020, could materially affect the unofficial election results.

[Illinois’ own data indicates that] Illinois received 266,417 vote-by-mail ballots statewide during the period from November 3rd through November 17th.

[M]ost of the 266,417 vote-by-mail ballots were received after Election Day, which would mean that as many as 4.4% of votes cast in 2020 were received after Election Day. [Emphasis in original]
