My theory is that ultra-heated plutonium or uranium would create a plasma bubble into which the atmosphere would collapse. As a kid, I once exploded a TV picture tube. Turned that heavy glass into tiny splinters. Imagine an implosion bubble the size of a house. Not sure if that could create a mushroom cloud though.
