QAnon believers analyse and interpret every event through the lens of Q drops. But some of the theories underlying QAnon are centuries old. Understanding the historic function of conspiracy theories and how they adapt upon contact with pre-existing theories is crucial in order to be able to predict its future developments and plan concrete actions to stop it from spreading. In this panel we look at how a US-born theory spreads across Europe, absorbing and interacting with local counterpart belief systems.

Some people describe the experience of those inside QAnon as being in a cult. Failed prophecies are re-interpreted and adherents appear detached from consensus reality. For survivors or family members forced to watch loved-ones falling down the rabbit hole, it is not easy to figure out how to ask for help or support them in getting out. In this panel we talk with survivors, support groups and experts to gain insights into real life effects of being or living with a conspiracy theorist.

QAnon believers are active "researchers" who produce videos, images, text and translations incessantly. Lighthouse Reports and Bellingcat have collected millions of posts from European QAnon channels. This store can be made sense of thanks to data-driven analysis. In this panel we will explore the possibility of analysing the genesis of a conspiracy theory, see how to reconstruct the networks that connect channels from different countries and how to make the best use of a database that encompasses almost all Europe’s known Q channels.
