the Egyptians tracked Sirius

The first seasonal (called heliacal) rising of Sirius was used to forecast the time of the seasonal floods of the Nile by the Egyptians.

There was a different Pole Star in the north then, the star called Thuban in the constellation Draco. The pyramids at Giza were aligned on Thuban.
