I remain skeptical about the new Q posts, but I read the lines and if I find or remember something I will share it.

Chancellor in the Cum-Ex scandal: Scholz cannot remember

HAMBURG taz | Would the chancellor be willing to be questioned under hypnosis? This question from CDU MP Richard Seelmaecker revealed the full despair of the Hamburg investigative committee on the Cum-Ex tax scandal when Olaf Scholz was questioned on Friday. The former mayor remained true to his line of not giving any tangible answers to the vast majority of questions. When asked about specific events and facts, he usually said he had no memory.

Of the Committee investigates why Hamburg authorities were willing to reclaim taxes from cum-ex deals in 2016 and 2017 in the amount of 90 million euros and whether the Senate leadership at the time worked towards this. Scholz was mayor at the time, and today’s mayor of Hamburg, Peter Tschentscher (SPD), is finance senator.

Specifically, it is about cum-ex transactions by the Hamburg private bank MM Warburg, which have now turned out to be illegal. In the transactions, shares were traded in such a way that those involved could have a capital gains tax paid once reimbursed several times – a simple grab into the state coffers.

Scholz was already in April 2021 questioned by the Parliamentary Committee of Inquiry of the Hamburg Parliament and first reported on his statements during this survey for the gallery. However, Scholz was able to contribute little that enlightened about the oddities that had surfaced recently.

Chancellor very quietly

During the questioning, many of the chancellor’s answers faded away to the point where they were barely audible. This went so far that a listener from the balcony in the community hall called out that it was arrogant, he should speak louder – and had to give his personal details because of possible insults.

Whether e-mails in connection with the Cum-Ex case in the Hamburg administration were deleted? He could not report that, it was a wide field, said the Chancellor: “Why should that be the case?” Scholz then asked.

Does he remember a meeting of the Bundestag Finance Committee in July 2020? Specifically not. According to the minutes of the meeting, which is classified as classified, Scholz said something specific about a meeting with Olearius – which he otherwise always denied. The protocol was heavily blacked out and is not available to the Hamburg committee. So Scholz could not be blamed and he saw no reason to say anything about it, except: the classification of the minutes of the meeting as secret was not prompted by the Ministry of Finance, which he led.

Scholz dismissed indications that his personal consultant had been asked to “sort in” critical appointments with SPD politicians lobbying for Warburg. The speaker did that on her own.

question and counter-question

Left-wing MP Norbert Hackbusch asked him why he hadn’t mentioned during his interrogation in April that the public prosecutor’s office was conducting preliminary proceedings against him. “Why should I have reported it?” Scholz asked back. As a rule, each witness is asked by the committee chairman at the end of his hearing whether he knows any other relevant facts. At least the opposition would have thought that was important. Meanwhile they are Investigations against Scholz finally stopped.

And that’s what it says in the diaries of Warburg banker Christian Olearius, which prompted the committee of inquiry. “If you summarize the diary entries, it becomes clear: There was nothing there.” Many MPs are not so sure. Two of the meetings took place a few weeks apart – just as the tax authorities made the surprising decision not to reclaim the money.
