Central Istanbul Blast Leaves Multiple Wounded

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - An explosion on a busy pedestrian street in central Istanbul's Taksim area left multiple people wounded and others running from the scene, according to Turkish media and published videos.

State broadcaster TRT and other media showed videos of ambulances and police headed to the scene on Istanbul's Istiklal Street.

Explosion on Istanbul’s pedestrian avenue; deaths reported

ISTANBUL (AP) — An explosion on Istanbul’s popular pedestrian Istiklal Avenue Sunday has left people dead and injured, a senior official said.

Istanbul Gov. Ali Yerlikaya tweeted that the explosion occurred at about 4:20 p.m. (1320 GMT) and that there were deaths and injuries, but he did not say how many. The cause of the explosion was not clear.

Turkey’s media watchdog imposed a temporary media ban on reporting of the explosion, which means broadcasters cannot show videos of the moment of the blast or its aftermath. The Supreme Board of Radio and Television has imposed similar bans in the past, following attacks, accidents and some political issues.

A video posted online showed flames erupting and a loud bang, as pedestrians turned and ran away.

Other footage showed ambulances, fire trucks and police at the scene. Social media users said shops were shuttered and the avenue closed down.

Broadcaster CNN Turk, in an early report, said 11 people were injured. The avenue is a crowded thoroughfare popular with tourists and locals, lined by shops and restaurants.

Turkey was hit by a string of deadly bombings between 2015 and 2017 by the Islamic State group and outlawed Kurdish groups.

FBI memo reveals drug smuggling at Mena airport in 1980s

by Associated PressTuesday, July 21st 2020

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A recently released FBI document indicates that a commercial airline pilot who became a major drug smuggler for the Medellín Cartel used the Mena airport for his smuggling operation in the early 1980s.

The “extensive joint investigation” by the FBI, Arkansas State Police and IRS disclosed in the May, 1986, FBI memo released last week, that pilot Barry Seal admitted to smuggling large quantities of cocaine from Colombia to the United States and testified before a Senate investigative committee prior to his death.

Seal was killed in February 1986 during a hail of machine-gun fire outside a Baton Rouge Salvation Army halfway house after allegedly crossing Pablo Escobar and the MedellĂn drug cartel, according to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. He conducted his smuggling operation from Baton Rouge to Rich Mountain Aviation at the Mena Intermountain Airport.

The FBI in Little Rock began investigating Seal’s operation at the Mena airport in February 1984, according to the recently released FBI document. After a barrage of requests from different people and media outlets under the federal Freedom of Information Act, last Wednesday the FBI released more than 1,000 pages of its file on Seal. Many names in the documents have been redacted, however.

“The original information dates back to the activities of a pilot, Barry Seal (now deceased), who is purported to have flown guns to South America from Mena and drugs back into the United States,” according to the memo.

Connor Hagan, a spokesman for the FBI in Little Rock, said the release of so much information into the FBI’s public “vault” doesn’t mean that the documents haven’t previously been made public. He said parts of it could have been provided to people under previous information requests.

Seal’s activities spawned several books, conspiracy theories and movies, including the basis of the Tom Cruise 2017 movie “American Made,” in which the New York Times called it the Conspiratorial Industry Complex.

It’s Mitch McConnell’s fault. Spending money to defeat great Republican candidates instead of backing Blake Masters and others was a big mistake. Giving 4 Trillion Dollars to the Radical Left for the Green New Deal, not Infrastructure, was an even bigger mistake. He blew the Midterms, and everyone despises him and his otherwise lovely wife, Coco Chow!
