In 1977, Ronnie Van Zant, the lead singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd, was killed in a plane crash. In the early hours of October 20, 2009, someone broke into his grave and stole his body. The grave robber(s) left behind a note that read, “Rest in peace, Ronnie. You are not forgotten.” Ronnie Van Zant was a rock and roll icon and a southern legend. He was the voice of a generation and his loss was a devastating blow to the music world. Van Zant was only 29 years old when he died, but his legacy has lived on for decades. The theft of Van Zant’s body has left many questions unanswered. Who would want to steal the body of a dead man? And why? Theories abound, but no one knows for sure what motivated the grave robber(s). Van Zant’s family has offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to the return of his body. In the meantime, Ronnie Van Zant rests in peace, wherever he may be.
