#OTD in 1943, 644 men on USS Liscome Bay (CVE-56) were lost when the escort carrier was torpedoed. It was the largest loss of life in the sinking of a U.S. carrier. Among those killed was Dorie Miller who had been awarded the Navy Cross for his actions during Pearl Harbor.
