The Jesuits took over control of the Silk Road early on. While they were supposedly kicked out, I doubt they truly gave up that kind of control over the exotic goods they could pillage from China. They were merchants, not clergy. Every where they went it was about control of resources. All those missions in the SW America weren't about converting the natives. It was about using the natives as slave labor to 'mine' for them.
