We have a multitude of ancient stories professing our genesis was a product of gifted geneticists' experiments. Look to those like Prometheus, Enki or Osiris, said to be the Father of Man. In several stories, we were molded out of clay. What this really means is we were imbued with more sophisticated aspects (the proper translation is "you were made with God-like attributes") of what we now call "alien" DNA (our creators). Essentially, the physical, mean cutout was invigorated with more "refined" DNA.

Afterward, either the same party (though derivative) or some more recent passersby stopped and further tweaked us. This time a patch was installed that made us susceptible to their conditionings. Among the patch notes were a shortened perception wavelength of several varieties, most importantly sight and hearing. But these are the more mundane features of our "updates", as the more sophisticated changes were on a more "spiritual" level, regarding what you all regularly refer to as "magic(k)", absent a very moored understanding.

To be a little more succinct, these tweaks were meant to disable our different perceptions, namely the more (at least now) "advanced" kinds, leading many of us to be unable to understand more intelligent topics (dumbing us down), perceive things now out of our reach and, probably most importantly, restricting our ability to "communicate" through channels now out of our reach.
