Abstract

The Raelian Movement is arguably the world's largest “flying-saucer cult.” Its spokespersons boast of 80,000 members worldwide. The aim of the Raelian Movement is to “spread the Message”—that all humankind, all races, and all species of flora and fauna were created from DNA matter by extraterrestrial scientists(the Elohim) who arrived on our barren planet at the dawn of time and set up laboratories. The Mouvement raëlien fran çais (MRF) has been criticized as one of the most dangerous and despicable sects in France. Ever since its inception in the early 1970s, it has been attacked in the newspapers, on television, and in anticult literature. But despite this cultural opposition, the Raelians have always flourished in France. Raël, their prophet and messie, however, fled the country in 2002 and has never returned. The story of how Raël was driven from French soil, of how the French Raelians have weathered antisecte discrimination, and why they recently disbanded their formal organization to go underground, is a dramatic and fascinating story in itself—and it tells us a great deal about the impact of the anticult movement on the targeted groups in France.

> The Raelian Movement: A

RAËLIAN SEXUALITYSociologist Susan Palmer has written that the movement “appears to be one of the rare examples of a newreligious movement (NRM) whichpromotes in its members a tolerance for sexual ambiguity andencourages homosexual expression.”47She notes that experimental and individualistic approaches toredefining sexuality abound and, in fact, may be one of the reasons for the movement’s growth, particularly in French-speaking and predominantly Catholic Quebec.48Although 85 percent of the peopleof Quebec are Catholic, only 15 percent attend church with any regularity, and spirituality has turned tothe “flaky and esoteric,” with 800 sects and religions in Montreal alone.49Cloning may be the issue thathas brought the movement national notoriety, but it appears to be the encouragement of multiple formsof sexual expression that is aprimary drawing card for those seeking spiritually sanctioned sexualadventures.THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLEAccording to a Reuters News Service report, masturbation and communal orgasm as well as sexualfreedom and pleasure are foundational behaviors and attitudes encouraged by the Raëlian religion.50Infact, they are taught the techniques of “sensual meditation” in annual worldwide Awakening Seminars.51The aim is to decondition and uninhibit the self and broaden tastes and ways of thinking, maximizing thebody’s ability to experience pleasure “without the paralysis of society’s guilt.” According to Raël, we are“born for pleasure.”52Raël claims the Elohim recommend freedom of choice with respect to sexual tastesor experiences, including homosexual and bisexual partners. Marriage is discouraged and considered“useless.” The key to societal transformation is personal development of sensuality.53Sensual education isalso advocated for children. Parents are encouraged to awaken children’s minds by awakening theirbodies. The thrust of this education appears to be teaching children to use their sexual organs forpleasurable rather than utilitarian purposes.54The Raëlians’ distribution of 10,000 condoms to students ata high school in Montreal in 1992 prompted considerable commentary by the press.55
