Winklevoss twins owed $900M by crypto broker as FTX contagion spreads

December 5, 2022

The crypto exchange owned by the Winklevoss twins is trying to recoup $900 million from a cash-strapped crypto broker that has been gutted in the wake of the FTX collapse, according to a report.

New York-based Gemini — which Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss started after settling their famous beef with ex-Harvard classmate Mark Zuckerberg over who founded Facebook — ran a partnership for customers in its “earn” program in which Gemini lent its coins to the crypto broker Genesis in return for a fixed stream of returns.

But Genesis said it could not afford to make good on all of its returns last month after it faced “unprecedented market turmoil” as a result of the FTX collapse, according to the Financial Times.

The Winklevosses have created a committee of creditors to try to reclaim their $900 million investment from Genesis and its parent company, Digital Currency Group (DCG).

The Winklevoss twins founded Gemini in 2014, and became the first US-based licensed Ethereum exchange.

Meanwhile, Genesis is trying to raise emergency funds to pay off its debts, and has hired the investment bank Moelis & Co to help figure out how, the FT reported.

Genesis has about $2.8 billion in active loans, according to its website. Its parent company DCG is in $2 billion worth of debt, $1.7 billion of which is owed to its own subsidiary, Genesis.

DCG was founded in 2015 and is one of the biggest investors in the crypto industry, reaching a $10 billion valuation last year.

Genesis, which is run by billionaire Barry Silbert, lost $1.1 billion over the summer on a loan to imploded hedge fund Three Arrows Capital. DCG took on Genesis’s liabilities, subsequently owing $1.1 billion to Genesis, according to FT.

FTX, founded by Sam Bankman-Fried, filed for bankruptcy protection on Nov. 11 in the highest-profile crypto blowup to date, after traders pulled billions from the platform in three days and rival exchange Binance abandoned a rescue deal.

Kanye West was kicked off Twitter for posting symbol of UFO-worship cult

December 5, 2022

Kanye West was kicked off Twitter on December 2 for posting a swastika inside a Star of David — but it turns out the image is actually the insignia for a UFO-worshiping cult and not necessarily the anti-Semitic symbol that it was widely read to be.

The group is the offbeat Raël Movement, which claims to have 50,000 members in 85 countries and is often described as a cult.

Raëlians, as they call themselves, maintain that “all life was created by the Elohim, who were extraterrestrials visiting earth from another planet,” Glen Carter, president of the British Raelian group, told Vice.

Members of the sect maintain that their symbol — offensive for obvious reasons — means no disrespect to Jewish people. As a Raëlian named Houari told Newsweek in 2020, “Don’t worry, it has nothing to do with Jews and Nazis.”

>GENERAL MILLEY ‘JUMP STREET’ DIG - HUMAN TRAFFIC AND SEXUAL ABUSE

‘Serial predator’ James Toback accused of sexual misconduct by over three dozen women

December 5, 2022

Over three dozen women filed a joint lawsuit against alleged “serial sexual predator” James Toback on Monday for sexual misconduct.

In the court documents obtained by Page Six, the women claim the director “used his reputation, power and influence in the entertainment industry” to “lure young women through fraud, coercion, force and intimidation into compromising situations where he falsely imprisoned, sexually abused, assaulted, and/or battered them.”

Despite the alleged abuse spanning over the last 38 years, the victims allege they are only speaking out now due to his “explicit and implicit threats of blacklisting them in the industry, physically harming them, and/or even killing them if they did not comply with and remain silent about the sexual abuse they endured.”

In fact, the disgraced director allegedly told numerous victims he had murdered before and had ties to the mob in an effort to scare them.

The nearly 90-page lawsuit also claims that Toback, 78, would make the women “act provocatively” and perform sexual acts on him “to see if they were right for the alleged ‘role’” — that didn’t even exist.

The women are also suing the Harvard Club of New York City for allegedly being complicit and allowing “Toback’s abuse to continue unchecked.”

“Toback repeatedly used his membership and affiliation with the Harvard Club of New York City to facilitate and carry out his abuse, luring his victims to the Harvard Club for meals and drinks and attacking them in the Harvard Club’s dining room, stairwells, bathrooms and hotel rooms,” the court documents claim.
