"No one will come and touch, harm, threaten, do anything to any person walking into that voting booth to exercise that right. This is a legal position that we are taking. We are in position so that if anything happens to anyone, we are here to offer you legal representation. We are here to offer you security. And that's that. And may the best person win," Khallida Ramla Bastet said at a press conference Monday.

The armed patrols will be conducted at polling locations in Brunswick, Georgia; Savannah, Georgia; and Atlanta between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. and then again between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., according to the group. The intent is not to intimidate voters as they cast their ballots, the group said, maintaining it does not endorse either candidate.

The New Black Panther Party was founded in 1989 in Dallas, Texas, as a black nationalist group that is anti-capitalist and seeks to fight the oppression of black and brown communities. The group is not affiliated with the Black Panther Party, a similarly aligned group that focuses more on black nationalism and socialism.

Several organizations, such as the Anti-Defamation League, the Southern Poverty Law Center, and the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, consider the New Black Panther Party to be a hate group, accusing its leaders of being racist and antisemitic.

Family Members Refuse To Shake Hands Of Mitch McConnell, Kevin McCarthy At Ceremony Honoring Police Officers Who Defended Capitol On January 6th

Story by Ted Johnson • 1h ago

Police officers and family members declined to shake the hands of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) during a Congressional Gold Medal ceremony on Tuesday to honor those who defended the Capitol amid the January 6th attack.

Video of the ceremony showed recipients shaking hands with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) but not McConnell and McCarthy.

The event was carried by CNN and MSNBC, and Fox News joined in later.

Ken Sicknick, the brother of Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, who died after the attack, told CBS News that he did not shake hands because “they came out right away and condemned what happened on January 6th, and whatever hold that [Donald] Trump has on them is backstepped, is danced. They won’t admit to wrongdoing, not necessarily them themselves, but of Trump, of the rioters. People like Louie Gohmert, who presented an American flag that was flown over the Capitol to a January 6th rioter and told them they were a patriot, it’s disgusting. It takes away everything my brother has done.” Gohmert, a Republican from Texas, has been critical of the federal prosecutions of those involved in the Capitol siege.

Gladys Sicknick, Brian Sicknick’s mother, told CNN she also declined the shake the hands of McConnell and McCarthy.

At the ceremony, McConnell said, “Thank you for saving our country. Thank you for being not just our friends, but our heroes.”

McConnell condemned Trump’s role in fomenting the siege on the Capitol, but he ultimately voted against convicting him on impeachment charges.

McCarthy said that “these brave men and women in uniform stood strong in the line of duty for our county, and we’re forever grateful for that.”

In the immediate aftermath of the attack, McCarthy said that Trump “bears responsibility” for what happened, but weeks later he trekked to Mar-a-Lago to reestablish the former president’s backing. McCarthy also declined to support impeachment against Trump.

Just before the ceremony, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-GA), the chairman of the January 6th Committee, told reporters that they will make criminal referrals to the Justice Department based on its investigation, but no announcement has been made as to who that will be.

Bank of America stock plunges, leading selloff in shares of largest U.S. banks

Story by Joseph Adinolfi • 10m ago

THE TELL

Shares of many of America’s largest banks are falling sharply this week after a period of outperformance that saw Goldman Sachs Group claw back practically all of its losses from earlier in the year.

Shares of Bank of America Inc. shares were down 5.5% Tuesday afternoon at $32.57, their lowest level since mid-October. Between Monday and Tuesday, shares of the North Carolina-based lender have fallen nearly 10%, leaving them on track for their worst weekly rout since June 2020, according to FactSet data.

Shares of Goldman Sachs Group Inc. JPMorgan Chase & Co. Wells Fargo Inc. Morgan Stanley and Citigroup Inc. also suffered intense selling on Monday and Tuesday, leaving them on track for their biggest weekly drop since September, only two trading days into the week.

Weakness in bank shares hit the Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund exchange-traded fund which has fallen more than 4% over the past two days, also putting it on track for its biggest weekly drop since September.

Market strategists highlighted news of layoffs at Morgan Stanley Inc. and Bank of America’s decision to slow hiring, while Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, said the continuing inversion of the Treasury yield curve “is not great for banks that borrow short and lend long, even if the high fed-funds rate benefits banks that don’t pass along that benefit to their depositors.”

The selloff comes as investors have heard commentary from several megabank CEOs during a conference hosted by Goldman Sachs on Tuesday. Earlier, JPM CEO Jamie Dimon also spoke about the risk of a recession in the U.S. next year during an interview with CNBC.

The spread between the 2-year yield and 10-year yield shrank as low as minus 86 basis points at one point on Tuesday, its most inverted level since 1981.
