The first thing Lauren Drain did after her family disowned her was walk to a local drugstore, buy poster board and markers, and list out her sins. Her father and sister had just driven her to a local motel and dropped her off, told her she was never to speak to them again, and that she'd been banished from the Westboro Baptist Church - the group known for picketing funerals of fallen soldiers, homosexuals, and AIDS victims, and most recently attempting to picket those of the Sandy Hook Elementary victims–for exchanging online communication with a boy who'd been interested in learning about the church. Now 27, Drain tells her side of the story about life as a member of the infamous hate group in Banished: Surviving My Years in the Westboro Baptist Church (Grand Central), out March 5. Construction began in 1255. The palace was built to house first the Capitano del Popolo and later, in 1261, the 'podestà', the highest magistrate of the Florence City Council. This Palazzo del Podestà, as it was originally called, is the oldest public building in Florence. This austere crenellated building served as model for the construction of the Palazzo Vecchio. In 1574, the Medici dispensed with the function of the Podestà and housed the bargello, the police chief of Florence, in this building, hence its name. It was employed as a prison; executions took place in the Bargello's yard until they were abolished by Grand Duke Peter Leopold in 1786, but it remained the headquarters of the Florentine police until 1859. When Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor Peter Leopold was exiled, the makeshift Governor of Tuscany decided that the Bargello should no longer be a jail, and it then became a national museum.

Belgian police seized cash and searched 16 properties across Brussels during major investigation into corruption and money laundering
Police investigators have suspected for several months that a Gulf country has sought to influence decisions at the European parliament through “paying large sums of money or offering large gifts” to people with “a significant political and/or strategic position”, according to the statement from the federal prosecutor.
Qatar, the gas and oil-rich state currently hosting the World Cup, was named by Belgium’s Le Soir and Knack as the country that had offered large sums of money and gifts in an attempt to shape decisions at the European parliament. All the suspects are Italian nationals and were said to be active in a human rights NGO, Belgian media reported.
The police operation was targeted at MEPs’ assistants, who can play a crucial role in shaping legislation and acting as a gatekeeper for elected members of parliament. The homes of four assistants close to the socialist group and one employed by the centre-right European People’s party were among those searched according to Belgian media.
