Ukraine shells holiday camp with US-made HIMARS – governor
At least a dozen people injured and killed in Russia’s Melitopol
Ukrainian forces launched a barrage of rockets towards the city of Melitopol on Saturday night, hitting a hotel and restaurant complex, according to the acting governor of Russia’s newly incorporated Zaporozhye Region, Evgeny Balitsky.
The attack took place around 9pm local time and was supposedly carried out using the US-supplied M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS). Two of the rockets were reportedly intercepted by the air defenses, but the remaining four missiles hit a cottage estate on the outskirts of the city and “completely obliterated” a small recreation center, killing and injuring patrons and staff, Balitsky said in a Telegram post.
Two people were killed on the spot, while another ten were rushed to hospitals, the official added. At least three of the victims are reportedly in critical condition, with doctors fighting for their lives.
Footage shared by Balitsky shows several houses on fire, with firefighters and rescuers working at the scene. In the meantime another extremely graphic video has been making rounds online, purportedly showing the immediate aftermath of the strike with several victims lying on the ground in agony and first responders trying to relieve their pain.
Zaporozhye was officially declared part of Russia in early October, along with Kherson Region and the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, after voters in those regions overwhelmingly supported the move in public referendums. Sitting near the Sea of Azov, Melitopol had a population of nearly 149,000 before the conflict.
Kiev has rejected the ballots and the change of status and pledged to use military force to oust Russia from all lands that Ukraine considers its own. Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky claimed that he wants all people living in what his government terms “temporary occupied territories” back under Kiev’s jurisdiction, but threatened to punish “collaborators” who cooperated with Russia.
The Melitopol-born politician, Balitsky, who turned 53 on the day of the attack, accused “Kiev nazis” of “deliberately targeting civilians” who were trying to enjoy a peaceful Saturday evening, in an apparent attempt to make life unbearable for the residents of newly incorporated Russian territories.

Ukraine can use American weapons to bomb Crimea – FM
Kiev has agreed not to attack most Russian territory with US weapons,but this does not apply to the peninsula, Dmitry Kuleba insists
The United States has not barred Ukraine from using American-made weapons to conduct strikes on the peninsula of Crimea, Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba claimed on Thursday.
Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Kuleba described the peninsula, which overwhelmingly voted to become part of Russia in 2014, as an internationally recognized Ukrainian territory. While Kiev had promised Washington it would refrain from striking Russian soil with American-supplied weapons, this deal doesn’t apply to Crimea, the minister said.
“Crimea is no different from the rest of Ukraine,” he said, adding that Kiev will “take all of its territories” back, including the peninsula, either by military or by diplomatic means.
“It’s too premature to make any forecasts on the balance between the two,” Kuleba added.
He also accused Russia of not being interested in peace talks, arguing that Moscow is “preparing for new battles” instead. Russian officials have on numerous occasions stated that they are open to diplomatic engagement with Ukraine “without any preconditions”except that Kiev show good will.
Last week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also dismissed accusations that Moscow is seeking peace talks with Ukraine as a ploy for a military build-up as a “blatant lie.”
Following the start of Russia’s military offensive in Ukraine in late February, the US and its Western allies have been providing Kiev with massive amounts of weaponry. However, Washington has been reluctant to support Ukraine with long-range arms, particularly ATACMS missiles with a range of 300 kilometers, over concerns that such a move could escalate the conflict.
To prevent possible complications, Washington secretly modified its High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) sent to Ukraine to prevent Kiev from conducting strikes deep into Russian territory, The WSJ reported earlier this week.
In mid-September, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned the US that, should it provide Kiev with long-range weapons, this would cross a “red line” and make America “a direct party to the conflict.”
