Ex-CNN producer pleads guilty to child sex charge in deal

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — A former CNN television producer pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to using interstate commerce to entice and coerce a 9-year-old girl to engage in sexual activity at his Vermont ski house.

As part of the plea deal, the government will drop the two remaining counts of enticement of a minor against John Griffin, 45, of Stamford, Connecticut.

According to the plea deal, Griffin met a woman on a website during the summer of 2020 and persuaded the woman to bring her 9-year-old daughter to his Ludlow, Vermont, ski home for illegal sexual activity.

Griffin paid the woman and girl to fly from Nevada to Boston, picked them up and drove them to his Vermont home where the girl said Griffin sexually assaulted her, court records say.

Griffin was arrested on Dec. 10, 2021, a day after he was indicted by a grand jury. He originally pleaded not guilty to three counts.

Griffin worked for CNN for about eight years but was fired after he was arrested, the network said last year.

He faces a possible sentence of at least 10 years and up to life in prison when he is sentenced on March 20, 2023. He must pay full restitution to the victims, an amount which will be determined by the court. He also faces a fine of up to $250,000 and other fees and has agreed to forfeit a Tesla vehicle, and electronic items and to donate half of the proceeds from the sale of his Vermont home and the upcoming sale of a Mercedes vehicle into the court registry.

He also faces a term of five years to life on supervised release, with conditions, including that he participate in a sex offender evaluation and treatment and register as a sex offender. He also cannot have contact with people under the age of 18, except in the presence of a responsible adult who has been approved by a probation officer, and is prohibited from being in areas where children congregate, such as schools, playgrounds and theme parks, unless approved by the probation office beforehand.

California school board scandal: Students subjected to "adult party"

Story by Li Cohen • 1h ago

The president of a California school district board appears to have resigned after he was accused of paying high school choir students to perform at a "private adult party" at his residence. During that party, according to the complaining parents, the students were offered alcohol and subject to inappropriate comments from a "dirty Santa," among other things.

Steven Llanusa was the president of Claremont Unified School District in Los Angeles County, a district representing two high schools, an intermediate school and six elementary schools. He had just been reelected as a school board trustee in the November election after campaigning as a 35-year teacher and a delegate to the state California School Board.

But last week, his track record with the area came to a screeching halt when allegations emerged that he had subjected high school students to an inappropriate situation at his home.

He was accused of hosting a private party at his home the weekend of Dec. 3, for which he allegedly invited high school choir students to perform. But according to the parents of the students who went, the party seemed to be one of debauchery.

"Mr. Llanusa invited the high school choir group into his private adult party in his home," Sabrina Ho, one of the teen's parents told the Claremont school board at a special meeting on Friday, according to video shared by CBS Los Angeles. "They were encouraged to take part in food and festivities. The students didn't begin their scheduled performance until over an hour later and were offered alcohol by party guests among inappropriately dressed adult entertainers."

Another person who attended the party shared a photo with CBS Los Angeles of shirtless performers in Santa and elf hats.

"I'm heartbroken for my son and his beloved choir group. I'm devastated as a parent," another parent said at the meeting.

And another, Gabriel Lozano, said his daughter was surrounded by drunken party attendees and that she and other students were interviewed by local police.

"They were offered an open bar and to socialize with the half-naked men, the dirty Santa that offered and made disgusting comments to our children," Lozano told CBS Los Angeles.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Llanusa resigned over the weekend. He is no longer listed on the school board's website, but a previous version of the webpage showed that he first joined the board in December 2005. His school district email is also no longer working. CBS News has reached out to Llanusa for comment through his social media.

According to Politico, the party was hosted by Matt Schlapp, chair of the American Conservative Union, along with his wife, Mercedes, on Friday at their home in Alexandria, Virginia.

Other guests included Sean Spicer and Sebastian Gorka, who served the Trump administration as press secretary and deputy assistant to the president respectively.

Kavanaugh has served on the Supreme Court since October 6, 2018, having been appointed by President Trump.

While Supreme Court Justices aren't bound by the same rules as federal judges, they are expected to maintain high ethical standards.

Speaking to Bloomberg Law, Professor Tonja Jacobi, from the Emory University School of Law in Atlanta, said: "Supreme Court justices should be extraordinarily careful in not only having no actual ethical difficulties but having no appearance of an ethical conundrum as well."

Miller is president of the America First Legal Foundation (AFLF), which he said will "protect America first, last and always" using "relentless litigation and oversight."

Bloomberg Law reports the AFLF has an interest in cases that are due to appear before the Supreme Court.

Reacting to the news, legal campaign group Citizens for Ethics tweeted: "Brett Kavanaugh attended a private holiday party on Friday night at the home of CPAC chairman Matt Schlapp, and that attendees included Stephen Miller, whose group America First Legal Foundation has interests in cases now pending before the Supreme Court."

Victor Shi, the youngest elected delegate for Joe Biden in 2020, responded by questioning the impartiality of conservative justices.

He tweeted: "Not kidding here: Brett Kavanaugh, a sitting Supreme Court Justice, was partying with Matt Gaetz, Stephen Miller, Sebastian Gorka, Erik Prince, & more right-wing extremists the other day. How can anyone look at these Republican Supreme Court justices & take them seriously anymore?

"Hard to take Supreme Court justices seriously when they are around people who literally want to destroy democracy."

Concern was also raised by Tristan Snell, a lawyer who was involved in legal action against Trump University.

He tweeted: "Brett Kavanaugh was just at a holiday party with Matt Gaetz, Stephen Miller, and Erik Prince, all of whom may soon be implicated in various federal crimes. Remember this one for later."

In June, the Supreme Court released a ruling by five votes to four that overturned Roe vs. Wade, the 1973 decision that put forward there is a constitutional right to have an abortion. Kavanaugh was one of the justices who supported the decision.

That same month, Nicholas Roske was arrested outside Kavanaugh's home in Maryland, armed with a knife and gun, allegedly telling police he planned to kill the Justice, in part because of his position on abortion.
