Binance halts withdrawals of major USDC stablecoin

LONDON, Dec 13 (Reuters) - Binance, the world's biggest crypto exchange, said on Tuesday it had "temporarily paused" withdrawals of the major stablecoin USDC.

"On USDC, we have seen an increase in withdrawals," Binance's chief executive Changpeng Zhao tweeted at around 0820 GMT.

Swapping USDC Coin with two other crypto tokens - Paxos Standard and Binance USD - requires using traditional dollars at a bank in New York, Zhao added. "The banks are not open for another few hours. We expect the situation will be restored when the banks open."

The swaps are "1:1 conversions, no margin or leverage involved. We will also try to establish more fluid swap channels in the future," he added.

Binance said in a separate tweet the halt was due to "token swap" - where digital token holders exchange their crypto coins, typically over different blockchains.

Binance said in September it would automatically convert user balances and new deposits of USD Coin and other stablecoins Pax Dollar and True USD into its own stablecoin, Binance USD.

Biden admin seeks $4 billion in additional border funding, predicts post-Title 42 border surge

There have been over half a million migrant encounters since October.

The Biden administration is requesting billions in additional funding for the border as it predicts an enormous spike in migrant encounters when the Title 42 authority to quickly expel migrants due to the COVID-19 pandemic ends later this month.

According to a congressional aide, the Biden administration is seeking $2 billion for additional funding for Customs and Border Protection (CBP) , as well as $2 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

That request, Fox is told, is based off the Department of Homeland Security’s estimation of daily encounters once Title 42 is ended on Dec. 21. A court ordered the administration to stop using the authority which has been used since March 2020 to quickly return migrants to Mexico after finding it to be unlawful.

That "flow estimation" predicts between 9,000 and 15,000 migrant crossings a day once Title 42 ends. For context, the average for fiscal year 2022 in which there were a record 2.3 million migrant crossings was approximately 6,500 crossings a day.

Newsom: California is overwhelmed by immigrant crisis

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — In an interview at the U.S.- Mexico border with ABC News, Governor Gavin Newsom said the federal government should be doing more to address the migrant crisis.

"The federal government is sending more and more flights, and more and more buses directly here to California because this state is doing what no other state's doing," Newsom told ABC's Matt Guttman, "and that's absorbing and protecting and preserving our values and advancing them by doing health care screenings, and taking care of folks, and the more we do, the burden is placed disproportionate on us."

Newsom said the state is overwhelmed.

"We're already at capacity and nine of our sites," said Newsom. "We can't continue to fund all of these sites because of the budgetary pressures now being placed on this state and the offsetting issues that I have to address."

He said with Title 42 being lifted in one week, the state will not be able to handle the influx.

"The reality is, unless we're doing what we're doing, people will end up on the streets," said Newsom.

Newsom said this is an issue that needs to be addressed by Republicans and Democrats, but not like how Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is doing it by sending immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard.

"I mean, that's just comedy and tragedy," said Newsom.

He said the system is about to break in California.

"The fact is, what we've got right now is not working, and it's about to break in a post-42 world unless we take some responsibility and ownership," said Newsom. "I'm saying that as a Democrat. I'm not saying that to point fingers. I'm saying that as a father, I'm saying that as someone that feels responsible for being part of the solution, and I'm trying to do my best here."

The California Press Corp, in charge of covering the governor, was not invited to this border tour. Political Analyst Steve Swatt said that was not accidental.

“He (Newsom) would like nothing better than to be the firebrand on the left for Democrats who is willing to take on governors DeSantis and Abbott on the immigration issue," said Swatt, "because it's so important to California in a different way than perhaps it's important to those states."

Newsom said he would be willing to work with Governor DeSantis and Abbot if they are willing “to put aside their cruelty and their zest for demonization.”

Feds in the Shadows: Leaked Documents Indicate over 300 Members of Oath Keepers May Be Current or Former DHS Employees – Not Clear How Many Are Federal Operatives

A leaked list of Oath Keepers members was published on Tuesday at the Project on Government Oversight (POGO) website.

It is not clear how POGO got this list.

The list included current or former employees of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) including members of the Border Patrol, Coast Guard, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Secret Service.

It is not clear how many of these men and women were federal operatives but the number is likely significant.

Despite the constant attacks by the liberal media and Democrat politicians, the Oath Keepers is not a criminal organization.

A leaked report on The Oath Keepers paramilitary organization committed to the US Constitution found that potentially hundreds of far-right extremists have infiltrated federal law enforcement, the Project on Government Oversight reported on Monday.

Launched in 2009, the Oath Keepers from the start tried to recruit from the military and law enforcement with an ostensible goal of upholding the US Constitution and having its members refuse unlawful orders, per the Southern Poverty Law Center, which labels it an “extremist” group. In practice, that has meant, as on January 6, rejecting the rule of law — court orders and democratic processes that thwart far-right policy goals — in favor of conspiracy theories and armed resistance.

More than a decade of recruitment has led the group to collect at least 306 members who have described themselves as “current or former employees of the Department of Homeland Security,” according to POGO, which reviewed the leaked membership documents from the group in partnership with the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project.

DHS agencies include US Customs and Immigration Services, the Transportation Security Administration, and the US Secret Service. Most of the self-described DHS employees asserted that they were retired, but at least one claimed to be an activity-duty Secret Service agent; another said they were a supervisor with Border Patrol, according to the documents reviewed by POGO.

John's Hopkins Medical School Professor Dr. Marty Makary, who also serves as a health advisor for Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, is warning "long COVID" is being exaggerated in order to extort American taxpayers for more money.

"Long Covid is real. I have reliable patients who describe lingering symptoms after Covid infection.
