Uncertain conditions await Bankman-Fried at Bahamas detention center

Prisoners faced rodents and a lack of toilets in the Bahamas detention center where Sam Bankman-Fried will be held, according to a 2021 U.S. State Department report, though local authorities says conditions have since improved.

The 30-year-old Bankman-Fried arrived at a Bahamas court on Tuesday for his first in-person public appearance since the spectacular collapse of cryptocurrency exchange he founded.

He did not waive a hearing on his extradition to the United States to face charges of misappropriating funds and violating campaign laws, apparently in hopes of obtaining bail, but was instead remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services until Feb. 8 by Chief Magistrate JoyAnn Ferguson-Pratt.

Bahamian Commissioner of Correctional Services Doan Cleare said preparations were being made for him to be housed in the medical department. That would mean he will be in a sick bay that can hold about five people, Cleare said.

"He will be in sick bay for orientation purposes and then we will determine where best to place him," Cleare said in a telephone interview on Tuesday.

The U.S. State Department in a 2021 report described conditions at the facility, also known as Fox Hill Prison, as "harsh," citing overcrowding, rodent infestation and prisoners relying on buckets as toilets.

Cleare said on Tuesday that prison conditions have greatly improved thanks to a renovation program that has built new cells.

"The facilities, most of them have been renovated," Cleare said. "We have one more to go and we don't have any issues with rodents."

Larry Levine, the founder of Wall Street Prison Consultants, which advises those convicted of white collar crimes on how to get into better prisons, said that Bankman-Fried should not fight extradition.

"There is no advantage to him staying, he'll be sent to the U.S. eventually anyway," Levine said.

U.S. prosecutors on Tuesday accused Bankman-Fried, the founder and former CEO of crypto currency exchange FTX, of fraud and violating campaign finance laws, saying he made illegal campaign contributions to Democrats and Republicans with "stolen customer money."

Mark S. Cohen, Bankman-Fried's lawyer, said in a statement that his client was considering all of his legal options.

Bankman-Fried has apologized to customers and acknowledged oversight failings at FTX, but said he does not personally think he has any criminal liability.

The Pope has offered a harrowing vision of the future, saying he has seen signs of an even darker time ahead for humanity.

At a Mass at the Vatican, the Pope, 85, said on Sunday that he has a dire vision for the world with 'omens of even greater destruction and desolation'.

The Mass was commemorating the feast of Our Lady Guadalupe, which fell on Monday. It commemorates the appearance of the Virgin Mary to a young man, Saint Juan Diego, in 1531 in Mexico City. The day is a national holiday in Mexico.

But despite the current difficult times for the world – including wars, particularly Russia's conflict in Ukraine, the rising cost of living, poverty, famine, and an international energy crisis – the Pope said he has a vision that things will get worse.

In his homily, the pontiff said 'it is a bitter time, filled with the rumbling of war, growing injustice, famine, poverty and suffering,' but at this 'bleak and disconcerting' time, there are 'omens of even greater destruction and desolation'.

He added that at Christmas, God's 'divine love and his coming down to us tell us that this too is a propitious time of salvation, in which the Lord, through the Virgin Mother, continues to give us his Son'.

He urged the Vatican congregation 'to get involved with each other without delay, to go out to meet our brothers and sisters who have been forgotten and discarded by our consumerist and indifferent societies'.

The pontiff recounted the Bible verse from John 3:16: 'God who so loved the world, sent us his son, "born of a woman", so that "whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life"'.

In the celebration of the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe the Pope said that the Virgin Mary 'invites us to leave behind all the prejudices and fears that populate our hearts and to trust in the true God for whom we live, joyfully and confidently directing us to reaffirm our belonging to the Lord'.

In 2031, it will be the 500th anniversary since the appearance of Mary to the young man in Mexico.

After reading the prayer on Thursday at the statue near the Spanish Steps, the pope greeted people in the crowd, including journalists.

When a journalist mentioned to Francis that she had seem him overcome with emotion, he responded: 'Yes. It (the war in Ukraine) is an enormous suffering, enormous. A defeat for humanity.'

A day earlier, he compared the war in Ukraine to a Nazi operation that killed some two million people, mostly Jews, in the first years of World War Two.

And in September, Francis said Ukraine was being 'martyred' and slammed Putin's 'monstrosity'. That same month, the pope revealed he had been involved in efforts to release 300 Ukrainian prisoners of war held by Russia.

Speaking at the time, he said he received 'Ukrainian emissaries' at the Vatican, including a military chief who brought with him a list 'of more than 300 prisoners'.

He made the remarks on September 15, a week before Russia and Ukraine carried out an unexpected prisoner swap involving almost 300 people - the largest since Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

The firm building former US president Barack Obama’s presidential library suspended operations after a noose was found at the construction site in Chicago and the police were called.

A $100,000 reward was offered by the construction company to help find who was responsible.

Lakeside Alliance, a partnership of Black-owned construction firms, said it reported the incident to police and “will provide any assistance required to identify those responsible”.

“We have zero tolerance for any form of bias or hate on our worksite. Anti-bias training is included in our on-boarding process and reiterated during site-wide meetings. We are suspending all operations onsite in order to provide another series of these trainings and conversations for all staff and workers,” the firm said in a statement on Thursday.

Obama’s charitable foundation also released a statement on the library, part of a project to create the Obama Presidential Center.

Obama was born in the US state of Hawaii but entered politics after becoming a community organizer in Chicago, passing through the state senate before becoming a US senator representing Illinois. He beat Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination for the presidency in 2008 and became America’s first Black president when he won the election, then was re-elected for a second term in 2012. The construction firm’s statement continued: “This shameless act of cowardice and hate is designed to get attention and divide us. Our priority is protecting the health and safety of our workforce.”’

The Chicago police department is aware of the noose and the matter is under investigation, said Sgt Rocco Alioto, a department spokesman.

An alliance spokeswoman, Lara Cooper, said she could not comment on whether it suspects a worker at the site and how the pause will affect the work.

City work to prepare for construction began in spring 2021 and the center is slated to open in 2025, located near the Obama family home.
