got to give a yearling deer a head scratch in the backyard this afternoon

his mom probably got shot recently

he seems sad

came looking for me when I was shoveling snow a few days ago

been meeting up with him every afternoon since with some handfuls of rolled oats

he's a 4-pointer

let me scratch his forehead between his antlers a couple times

then followed me into the woods for a walk

an amazing experience

it really is extraordinary

he's not starving though; very well filled-out

and finding food despite the deep snow

he was stopping to munch tender pine needles when we were in the woods

he was born and raised in my backyard, which is posted against hunting/trespassing

I was feeding him and his mother last winter

not substantially, just rolled oats and sometimes cracked corn

that's why he knows me

he approached me in the driveway when I was shoveling the other day

we seem to have an understanding

this is not a common experience

he knows he's safe here, and he is missing his mother

pic is of him and his mom taken in April of this year

he's in front, looking right at camera
