I only had the book for a brief time while at the German Naval forces, but it was fun learning so many knots and trying them out. The large hardcover version costs about
80,-€, but there is a pocket-book version too at about 38,-€.

You can use anything as counter. Sacks of salt, shells, pearls, coins of precious metal. Or even Knots on a string.
A value is the worth assigned to something, which can individually differ. If something is available at abundance it might not have the same value as something that is rare at a specific location or time. Many factors required to determine.
