>Avatar

This COULD be a ploy to sell more tickets, the boxoffice is wretched and has been for a long time. Cameron did Avatar 1 and few remember it and little/no marketing was done.

‘Avatar’ sequel dominates box office but falls short of expectations

December 19, 2022

“Avatar: The Way of Water,” the second entry in the director’s carefully plotted franchise, debuted this weekend at the top of the domestic box office, where it earned $134 million, according to data from Box Office Mojo. The film also captivated global audiences, earning an additional $300.5 million overseas.

The “Avatar” sequel arrived in theaters 13 years after its predecessor, which made $2.92 billion across the globe and remains the top-grossing theatrical release of all time. (“Avatar” was briefly displaced by 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” but reclaimed the crown last year with a rerelease in China.) Cameron is a fixture on that all-time list; his 1997 landmark film “Titanic” still ranks third, at $2.2 billion.

Given his past achievements, Cameron was trusted with an enormous budget for “Avatar: The Way of Water.” He told GQ last month that the film, on which he has been working since 2013, would need to be “the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history” to be considered profitable.

He said he told the studio that this was “the worst business case in movie history.”

The domestic earnings did fall short of opening-weekend expectations, whether in terms of the $175 million that industry analysts predicted or distributor Disney’s more modest $135 million-to-$150 million range, according to CNBC. The $134 million sum tied with “The Batman” as the fifth-biggest domestic opening this year. But the “Avatar” sequel’s earnings could build over the holidays.

Meet the people who never stopped thinking ‘Avatar’ was cool

The film has received mixed to positive reviews from critics, the more passionate of whom, such as New York magazine’s Bilge Ebiri, praised what he deemed the director’s ability to balance sentimentality and brutality in service of a larger message: “Cameron’s divided self finds its fullest expression on Pandora,” Ebiri wrote in his review, “not just because he can create vast new worlds and matrices of spiritually interconnected beings but also because he can fight battles he can’t fight elsewhere.”

Others, such as The Washington Post’s Ann Hornaday, were mixed on the film. In her two-star review, Hornaday wrote that it “is frequently clunky and ham-handed in its storytelling, and the words spoken by its characters — human, humanoid and in between — aren’t particularly memorable. But there’s no denying the power of images that can only be described as transporting — literally and figuratively.”

>Over time, the failures of his presidency are compounding

Trump’s list: 289 accomplishments in just 20 months, ‘relentless’ promise-keeping

October 12, 2018

The Trump administration’s often overlooked list of achievements has surpassed those of former President Ronald Reagan at this time and more than doubled since the last tally of accomplishments after his first year in office, giving President Trump a solid platform to run for re-election on.

As Trump nears the two-year mark of his historic election and conducts political rallies around the country, during which he talks up his wins in hopes it will energize Republican voters, the administration has counted up 289 accomplishments in 18 categories, capped by the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

They include 173 major wins, such as adding more than 4 million jobs, and another 116 smaller victories, some with outsize importance, such as the 83 percent one-year increase in arrests of MS-13 gang members.

“Trump’s successes in reducing the cost of taxes and regulations, rebuilding our military, avoiding wars of choice and changing the courts rival those of all previous Republican presidents,” said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform.

“Trump has an advantage over Ronald Reagan: He has a Reagan Republican House and Senate while Reagan had a [Democratic Speaker] Tip O’Neill House and a pre-Reagan Republican Senate. Reagan and [former GOP Speaker] Newt Gingrich were the ice breakers that allowed Trump’s victories to grow in number and significance,” he added.

Unlike the Year One list which included many proposals and orders still to be acted on, the new collection includes dozens of actions already in place, signed legislation, and enforced executive orders.

For example, while the Year One list bragged about the administration’s efforts to rewrite the much-maligned NAFTA trade deal with Canada and Mexico, the Year Two list said: “Negotiated an historic U.S.-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement to replace NAFTA.”

Year One List: 81 major Trump achievements, 11 Obama legacy items repealed

December 21, 2017

With the passage of the GOP tax bill this week, the Trump administration has scored 81 major achievements in its first year, making good on campaign promises to provide significant tax cuts, boost U.S. energy production, and restore respect to the United States, according to the White House.

And along the way, President Trump even outdid his own expectations and slashed at least 11 major legacy items of former President Barack Obama, including cracking down on the open border, slowing recognition of communist Cuba and effectively killing Obamacare by ending the mandate that everyone have health insurance or face a tax.

According to the White House, the 81 accomplishments are in 12 major categories and include well over 100 other minor achievements.

The unofficial list helps to counter the impression in the mainstream media and among congressional Democrats that outside the approval of Supreme Court Neil Gorsuch and passage of the tax reform bill little was done.

Administrations typically tout their achievements broadly at the end of each year, but Trump plans to list jobs added, regulations killed, foreign policy victories won, and moves to help veterans and even drug addicts.

And in a sign of support for conservatives, the White House also is highlighting achievements for the pro-life community.

Below are the 12 categories and 81 wins cited by the White House.

Incoming Rep. George Santos, Who Flipped a House Seat Red, Made Unsubstantiated Claims About His Past: Report

December 19, 2022

The Times reportsthat the New York representative-elect, who flipped a Long Island seat red after winning his congressional race in November, built his campaign on being the "embodiment of the American dream." But much of his campaign biography — including alleged stints at Citigroup and Goldman Sachs, and an animal rescue charity he says he founded — has now been put under a microscope by the explosive report.

While Santos himself has not yet commented on the allegations, his attorney said in a statement to various outlets including CNN thatthe allegations were "defamatory" and that the newly elected representative "represents the kind of progress that the Left is so threatened by — a gay, Latino, immigrant and Republican who won a Biden district in overwhelming fashion by showing everyday voters that there is a better option than the broken promises and failed policies of the Democratic Party."

Santos, who is 34 years old and the first openly gay Republican to win a House seat as a non-incumbent, has previously made a number of claims thatthe Times was unable to verify.

Santos has said he graduated from Baruch College in 2010 and, on a biography on the National Republican Congressional Committee's website, cites a stint at New York University. According to the Times, neither school could find a record of anyone matching his name or date of birth who had attended.
