I hope @KariLake uses @marceelias’ arguments on the merits. He did present very compelling arguments.

No, it won't help Lake because she lost and nothing will change that. She doesn't need a lawyer, she needs a new job. However, this video might serve as a lesson for how Republicans like Lake are enacting voter suppression laws.

So thank you.

When the Kushner Companies purchased 666 Fifth Avenue in midtown Manhattan in early 2007 for a record-breaking price of $1.8 billion, it was supposed to be a center of their real estate portfolio. Instead, the Kushners have struggled to cover their debt on the troubled building since shortly after its purchase on the eve of the financial crisis. As Jared Kushner’s father-in-law, Donald J. Trump, was running for President, the Kushners were pitching Qatari investors to help bail out the building. And just weeks after his father Charles reportedly failed to reach a deal with Qatar’s minister of finance, Jared Kushner, in his capacity as a senior adviser to President Trump, reportedly played a central role in supporting a blockade of Qatar by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Kushner never disclosed his meeting with Saudi Arabia and the UAE on the blockade to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson at the time. Later, a financial company tied to Qatar brokered an especially valuable deal to rescue the Kushner Companies’ property at 666 Fifth Avenue.

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/editorials/article-euthanasia-without-real-mental-health-care-is-a-moral-failure-fund-it/

Euthanasia without real mental health care is a moral failure. Fund it now

As Canada moves inexorably toward allowing people suffering from mental illness to access medical assistance in dying, an uncomfortable truth is becoming apparent: this country is on the verge of providing publicly funded euthanasia for people suffering from diseases for which there is little publicly funded care.

This is unconscionable. Lurking over this country is the spectre of a public insurance system that does not cover such basic treatments as psychotherapy, that underspends on mental health compared to peer countries, and that is failing to provide adequate community support and housing for people with chronic mental disorders. It will also shortly become a country that provides medically assisted deaths to people who can’t access the very things that might make their lives more bearable.

Whatever else a person may think about MAID, which in March will become available to people whose sole underlying condition is a mental illness, all can agree that it was never meant to be an alternative to care that government refuses to provide. Publicly funded services must be available, so that a person seeking MAID can make their request knowing that all their options have been exhausted – and so that Canadians are assured that the state didn’t contribute to a person’s decision to die.

Which means this is the moment that Ottawa and the provinces must expand medicare to cover all mental health treatments and therapies, to provide adequate disability payments for those who cannot work, and to make sure that supportive housing is available to those who need it.

This space supports the right to die with dignity and the principles that guide the MAID regime. We recognize that a chronic and severe mental illness can be as intolerable and irremediable as any physical disease. We know that most people suffering from a mental disorder who request MAID will have endured it for years and tried multiple treatments before opting for the last resort, and that they are capable of making that decision rationally.

But it is also true that the lives of many people suffering from mental disorders in Canada are complicated by poverty, an inability to work, a lack of trust in the health care system and, in too many cases, homelessness.

A report released by the Mental Health Commission of Canada found that 90 per cent of Canadians with serious mental illness are unemployed. With little financial means and no access to a family doctor, their contact with the health care system usually comes in the form of a visit to an emergency room, after which they revolve through a world of underfunded community supports, crowded shelters, living-rough and, too often, the criminal justice system.

What they need is stable housing and long-term treatment and therapy. But housing is hard to find or has long waiting lists, disability payments leave people with little to spend after rent is covered, and basic mental health treatments such as psychotherapy aren’t covered by medicare.

The federal government’s expert panel on MAID and mental illness, which reported in May, said that “structural vulnerabilities” such as poverty, inadequate care and a lack of social supports “may directly cause a person’s suffering,” and that “MAID requests may mask profound unmet needs.”

This can’t be accepted. We cannot be a country that, even if it’s just in theory, makes it easier to access MAID than it does to access mental health care services and housing.

The Canadian Mental Health Association says Canada spends 5 to 7 per cent of overall health care budgets on mental health, while OECD peer nations such as France, New Zealand and the Netherlands spend twice that. Britain and Australia fully cover mental health care under their public systems.

Canada has long needed to get with the times and offer a full range of mental health care services under our public insurance system. The Liberals have yet to fulfill their campaign pledge to create a new national transfer program to fund mental health. But what was urgent before has now become something far more dire.

In the short term, Ottawa must ensure that a lack of social supports cannot alone be used to justify a MAID request. But those safeguards are not enough: Ottawa and provinces must move to ramp up funding of mental health services.

To be a laggard on mental health care spending, while implementing some of the most liberal euthanasia laws in the world, is a moral failure.

FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried expected to appear in court in Bahamas, source says

Former FTX Chief Executive Sam Bankman-Fried, who faces fraud charges in the United States over the collapse of the bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange, is expected to appear in court in The Bahamas on Tuesday, a person familiar with the matter said.

Another person with knowledge of Bankman-Fried’s plans told Reuters he had decided not to fight extradition to New York, where federal prosecutors last week charged him with using stolen FTX customer funds to plug losses at his hedge fund, Alameda Research.

Neither a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s office in Manhattan nor Bankman-Fried’s U.S. defence lawyer, Mark Cohen, immediately responded to requests for comment.

Bankman-Fried has acknowledged risk-management failures at FTX, but has said he does not believe he has criminal liability.

On Monday, Bankman-Fried appeared in court in capital Nassau after Reuters and other outlets reported over the weekend that he had decided to agree to extradition. But during the tumultuous hearing, a Bahamas lawyer for Bankman-Fried, Jerone Roberts, said his client was not yet ready to consent.

Roberts said Bankman-Fried had seen an affidavit outlining the U.S. charges against him, but that he wanted to see the full indictment, which was unsealed in Manhattan federal court on Dec. 12.

The 30-year-old cryptocurrency mogul was arrested last Monday in the Bahamas, where he lives and where FTX is based, under a U.S. arrest warrant. He said at his initial court appearance on Tuesday that he would contest extradition while appealing a Bahamas magistrate’s decision to deny him bail.

He has since been detained at The Bahamas Department of Corrections in Nassau, formerly known as Fox Hill prison. The U.S. State Department in a 2021 report described conditions at the facility as “harsh,” citing overcrowding, rodent infestation and prisoners relying on buckets as toilets.

Local authorities say conditions have since improved.

The arrest capped a stunning fall from grace for Bankman-Fried, who rode a boom in the values of bitcoin and other digital assets to become a billionaire several times over.

He has been under increasing scrutiny since a flurry of customer withdrawals from FTX amid concerns over commingling of their funds with Alameda. Damian Williams, the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan, said last week Bankman-Fried’s actions amounted to “one of the biggest financial frauds in American history.”

The $32-billion exchange declared bankruptcy on Nov. 11, and Bankman-Fried stepped down as CEO the same day.

Upon arrival in the United States, Bankman-Fried would enter a plea in federal court within a day or two. A judge would then decide whether or not to grant him bail.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Formosa

The Republic of Formosa was a short-lived republic that existed on the island of Taiwan in 1895 between the formal cession of Taiwan by the Qing dynasty of China to the Empire of Japan by the Treaty of Shimonoseki and its being taken over by Japanese troops. The Republic was proclaimed on 23 May 1895 and extinguished on 21 October, when the Republican capital Tainan was taken over by the Japanese. Though sometimes claimed as the first Asian republic to have been proclaimed, it was predated by the Lanfang Republic in Borneo, established in 1777, as well as by the Republic of Ezo in Japan, established in 1869.

The mostly behind-the-scenes attempt between Election Day and Inauguration Day to prevent Donald Trump from taking office the first time—one that miraculously failed despite help from the media and the most powerful government agencies in the world—will go public in 2020. And instead of help from James Comey, Jim Clapper, or John Brennan, the 2020 version will be bolstered by the likes of George Soros, Tom Steyer, Pierre Omidyar, a member of the Rupert Murdoch family, and Big Tech titans among others.

One of the co-founders of the Transition Integrity Project is Rosa Brooks. The Georgetown law professor and Obama Administration alum is a former counsel and board member for the Open Society Foundation, created in 1993 by George Soros. The foundation is a massive donor to hundreds of left-wing causes around the world; in July, Open Society Foundation announced a five-year, $150 million investment in “racial justice” groups including Black Lives Matter.

In 2018, Soros’ two largest foundations reported more than $14 billion in assets.

In a recent Washington Post op-ed, Brooks put the country on notice; unless Joe Biden wins in a landslide, we will be sorry. “With the exception of the ‘big Biden win’ scenario, each of our exercises reached the brink of catastrophe, with massive disinformation campaigns, violence in the streets and a constitutional impasse,” she warned. That reaction will occur, according to the simulations, even if Trump wins the Electoral College but loses the popular vote.

What’s the worst that could happen?

The election will likely spark violence — and a constitutional crisis

By Rosa Brooks

September 3, 2020

We wanted to know: What’s the worst thing that could happen to our country during the presidential election? President Trump has broken countless norms and ignored countless laws during his time in office, and while my colleagues and I at the Transition Integrity Project didn’t want to lie awake at night contemplating the ways the American experiment could fail, we realized that identifying the most serious risks to our democracy might be the best way to avert a November disaster. So we built a series of war games, sought out some of the most accomplished Republicans, Democrats, civil servants, media experts, pollsters and strategists around, and asked them to imagine what they’d do in a range of election and transition scenarios.

Rosa Brooks @brooks_rosa is a law professor at Georgetown University and co-founder of the Transition Integrity Project.

A landslide for Joe Biden resulted in a relatively orderly transfer of power. Every other scenario we looked at involved street-level violence and political crisis.

Picture this:

On the morning of Election Day, false stories appear online claiming that Biden has been hospitalized with a life-threatening heart attack and the election has been delayed. Every mainstream news organization reports that the rumors are unfounded, but many Biden supporters, confused by the bogus claims, stay home.

Still, by late that night, most major networks have called the election for Biden: The former vice president has won key states and has a slender lead in the national popular vote, and polling experts predict that his lead will grow substantially as Western states count an unusually high number of mail-in ballots. The electoral college looks secure for Biden, too.

But Trump refuses to concede, alleging on Twitter that “MILLIONS of illegal ALIENS and DEAD PEOPLE” have voted in large numbers and that the uncounted ballots are all “FAKE VOTES!!!” Social media fills with posts from Trump supporters alleging that the election has been “stolen” in a “Deep State coup,” and Trump-friendly pundits on Fox News and OAN echo the message.

Soon, Attorney General William P. Barr opens an investigation into unsubstantiated allegations of massive vote-by-mail fraud and ties between Democratic officials and antifa. In Michigan and Wisconsin, where Biden has won the official vote and Democratic governors have certified slates of pro-Biden electors, the Trump campaign persuades Republican-controlled legislatures to send rival pro-Trump slates to Congress for the electoral college vote.

The next week is chaotic: A list of Michigan and Wisconsin electors for Biden circulates on right-wing social media, including photos, home addresses and false claims that scores of them are in the pay of billionaire George Soros or have been linked to child sex-trafficking rings.

In August 2020, TIP released a report outlining its findings and recommendations. The report stated, "We […] assess that the [sic] President Trump is likely to contest the result by both legal and extra-legal means, in an attempt to hold onto power. Recent events, including the President's own unwillingness to commit to abiding by the results of the election, the Attorney General's embrace of the President's groundless electoral fraud claims, and the unprecedented deployment of federal agents to put down leftwing protests, underscore the extreme lengths to which President Trump may be willing to go in order to stay in office." The report's intention was to inspire the necessary changes to ensure a fair election in 2020. "These risks can be mitigated; the worst outcomes of the exercises are far from a certainty. The purpose of this report is not to frighten, but to spur all stakeholders to action."
