White House comments on Iran after Biden’s ‘dead deal’ video
Footage, apparently from November, shows the US president claiming the nuclear accord is no more
The White House stated on Tuesday that reviving the nuclear deal with Iran is “not our focus right now,” after an unconfirmed video of US President Joe Biden calling the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) “dead” was put online.
“There is no progress happening with respect to the Iran deal now. We don't anticipate any progress anytime in the near future. That's just not our focus,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters on a briefing call, when asked about the video.
Biden apparently made the admission after a campaign rally last month in California. In the short video, posted on Twitter by user Damon Maghsoudi and reported by Axios on Tuesday, a woman asks Biden to announce that the JCPOA is dead.
“No,” Biden replies. “It is dead, but we are not gonna announce it.”
When she asks why, he replies, “For a lot of reasons. Long story.”
Told that the protesters don’t want any deals with the Iranian government, Biden says, “I know they don’t represent you. But they will have a nuclear weapon that they'll represent.”
The exchange apparently took place on November 4, at a Democrat campaign event in Oceanside, California. It was unclear why it took more than six weeks for it to be made public.
The JCPOA was a deal struck between the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany (P5 1) on one side and Iran on the other, in July 2015, when Barack Obama was the US president and Biden his vice-president. The arrangement provided for lifting the UN sanctions against Iran in exchange for strict oversight of Tehran’s nuclear program.
In May 2018, Obama’s successor Donald Trump unilaterally repudiated the deal on behalf of the US. Biden, who replaced Trump in 2021, officially sought to revive it but talks with Iranian representatives went nowhere. The most recent initiative to salvage the deal was a compromise proposed by the EU in August, which would penalize Washington if it reneged again.

Ukraine is not our ally – Croatian president
Zoran Milanovic has vetoed an initiative to train Kiev’s troops, advising his PM to “go to Ukraine and fight” himself
Croatian President Zoran Milanovic said on Tuesday that Ukraine “is not an ally” of his country and warned against bringing “war” to the Balkans.
“Ukraine is not an ally. It’s being forcibly made into one. It was cynically granted the status of an EU candidate. That’s what the EU is today: squalor, zero.”
Talking to reporters, he also hit out against Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic for his proposal to have Ukrainian troops trained in Croatia. Milanovic said such a move would “bring war” to the country.
“You keep pushing moral blackmail,” he addressed Plenkovic, “but you have no morals yourself. Go to Ukraine and fight.”
Speaking of the Croatian military’s preparedness to fight, Milanovic noted it had a shortage of anti-tank rockets, for example. “We have Americans, who will defend us the way they defend the Ukrainians. Great!” he said sarcastically.
The president’s comments come after Croatian lawmakers failed to adopt a motion for the country to join an EU program intended to train some 15,000 Ukrainian military personnel to fight against Russia. Last week, only 97 Croatian MPs out of 151 voted for the proposal, just short of the two-thirds of lawmakers it needed to pass.
Ahead of the vote, Milanovic, who is the commander-in-chief of the Croatian armed forces, warned that joining the program could make Zagreb a target for Russia. Plenkovic, whose cabinet backed the mission, in turn accused the president of harboring “pro-Russian views.”

UK press watchdog reveals column with 'most' complaints ever
The former ‘Top Gear’ hostdeclared that he hates Prince Harry’s wife “on a cellular level”
A column by British commentator Jeremy Clarkson, in which he professed his hatred for Meghan Markle, has generated a record 17,500 complaints to Britain’s Independent Press Standards Organization. Clarkson, who argued that Markle should be “paraded naked” through the streets of the UK, has since apologized.
“I hate her,” Clarkson wrote in the Sun on Friday. “Not like I hate Nicola Sturgeon or Rose West. I hate her on a cellular level.”
“At night, I’m unable to sleep as I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her.”
Clarkson accused the American actress of turning her husband, Prince Harry, into a “warrior of woke,” and called on Harry to tell “the truth” about his wife and “the spotlight of fame she craves so desperately” in his upcoming autobiography.
By Tuesday, the article had triggered more than 17,500 complaints to the Independent Press Standards Organization, the regulatory body told Reuters. The total number of complaints made to Ipso in 2021 was 14,355, the BBC reported.
As lawmakers, celebrities, and Clarkson’s own daughter condemned the column, the contrarian columnist admitted on Monday that he’d “rather put my foot in it.”
Describing the image of a naked Markle being paraded through the streets as “a clumsy reference to a scene in Game of Thrones,” Clarkson said that he was “horrified to have caused so much hurt,”and promised to be “more careful in future.”
The Sun removed Clarkson’s article from its website on Monday evening.
Prince Harry married Markle in 2018, and the pair stepped down from their royal duties two years later. Markle has since branched into podcasting, TV production, and liberal political activism. In a Netflix documentary series that concluded last week, she claimed that her harsh treatment by the British media left her feeling suicidal.
Clarkson wrote in his column that the series should have been called “A Woman, Talking Bollocks.”

US-backed officials in massive fraud case – media
Washington was reportedly aware of the widespread corruption in ex-Afghan president Ashraf Ghani’s government but continued to fund it

Afghan government officials supported by the US helped a smuggler ring sneak more than $800 million out of Afghanistan in the years prior to the Taliban takeover, Business Insider reported on Tuesday.
Citing a trove of documents the outlet obtained from former Afghan officials, it revealed that the money was mostly carried through a border crossing into the nation’s northern neighbor, Uzbekistan. Business Insider described it as “a river of cash flowing out” of Afghanistan.
The money was never declared to the country’s officials but was reported to Uzbek customs agents on the other side of the border, the outlet said, adding that it got access to a total of 457 pages of records detailing the cash flow.
According to the Uzbek customs forms, much of the money smuggled that way was destined for the United Arab Emirates, where many top Afghan officials, including the ousted president, Ashraf Ghani, and his family fled not long before the Taliban takeover.
The sum of money smuggled out of Afghanistan over that period amounted to a total of $884 million, which is about 4% of the national GDP, according to the article. It also exceeded the US annual humanitarian assistance funding for the country, the media outlet added.
The US was well aware of widespread corruption within the Afghan government but did little to stop it, Business Insider claimed.American diplomats expressed their concerns over the matter in “the inner circle of the president” to Afghan officials in March 2021. The issue was also repeatedly raised in the final report of the US Afghan Study Group and investigations by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR).
Yet, when the Afghan officials looking into the smuggling ring approached the US Embassy and EU diplomats after being ignored by Ghani’s government, they also did nothing about it, the article noted. Instead, the investigators themselves started to receive death threats.
Ghani was previously accused of fleeing Afghanistan with loads of cash. Republicans on the House Oversight Committee called on the attorney general in 2021 to investigate reports about Ghani supposedly fleeing Kabul “with bags full of $169 million.” The ousted president himself denies all of these allegations.
