Ukraine is not our ally – Croatian president

Zoran Milanovic has vetoed an initiative to train Kiev’s troops, advising his PM to “go to Ukraine and fight” himself

Croatian President Zoran Milanovic said on Tuesday that Ukraine “is not an ally” of his country and warned against bringing “war” to the Balkans.

“Ukraine is not an ally. It’s being forcibly made into one. It was cynically granted the status of an EU candidate. That’s what the EU is today: squalor, zero.”

Talking to reporters, he also hit out against Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic for his proposal to have Ukrainian troops trained in Croatia. Milanovic said such a move would “bring war” to the country.

“You keep pushing moral blackmail,” he addressed Plenkovic, “but you have no morals yourself. Go to Ukraine and fight.”

Speaking of the Croatian military’s preparedness to fight, Milanovic noted it had a shortage of anti-tank rockets, for example. “We have Americans, who will defend us the way they defend the Ukrainians. Great!” he said sarcastically.

The president’s comments come after Croatian lawmakers failed to adopt a motion for the country to join an EU program intended to train some 15,000 Ukrainian military personnel to fight against Russia. Last week, only 97 Croatian MPs out of 151 voted for the proposal, just short of the two-thirds of lawmakers it needed to pass.

Ahead of the vote, Milanovic, who is the commander-in-chief of the Croatian armed forces, warned that joining the program could make Zagreb a target for Russia. Plenkovic, whose cabinet backed the mission, in turn accused the president of harboring “pro-Russian views.”

Former EU parliament VP admits corruption connection – media

Eva Kaili told the police that she had instructed her father to hide suitcases of Qatar-linked cash, La Repubblica reported

Eva Kaili, a Greek lawmaker and former EU parliament vice-president, has told Belgian investigators that she tasked her father with hiding a suitcase full of cash during a police crackdown on a Qatari bribery scheme, Italy’s La Repubblica reported on Tuesday. Kaili, whose husband has already reportedly admitted to taking bribes from Doha, had previously denied any involvement in the graft ring.

According to documents cited by the Italian newspaper and by Belgium’s Le Soir, Kaili confessed that on the night of a police raid on her address on December 9, she told her father to remove a suitcase of cash from the property. Her father was later arrested while leaving a nearby hotel with several hundred thousand euros.

Kaili said that she then tipped off two other MEPs about the police operation, the report continued. Quoting a court document, the paper said that Kaili “had prior knowledge” of her husband’s involvement in the bribery scheme, and knew that “suitcases full of cash had been moved through her apartment.”

The scheme involved Qatari officials paying huge sums of cash to EU lawmakers in exchange for influence in Brussels. Kaili’s husband, an Italian national named Francesco Giorgi, already confessed to handling this cash, Reuters reported last week. Giorgi also reportedly named his former boss, ex-MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri, as the leader of the ring.

Kaili, Giorgi, Panzeri and one other unnamed individual have been charged with “participation in a criminal organization, money laundering, and corruption,” Belgian prosecutors said last week. Panzeri’s wife and daughter are currently under arrest in Italy, and are believed to have participated in the scandal by moving cash and gifts.

When news of her arrest first broke, Kaili’s lawyer said that the former MEP “declares her innocence and that she has nothing to do with bribery from Qatar.”

Kaili, who is Greek, has been removed from office and the European Parliament has halted all legislative work related to Qatar. The parliament voted almost unanimously last Thursday to deny Qatari representatives access to its premises and condemned the alleged “foreign interference” in its business.

Doha denies any involvement in the scandal, and its mission to the EU warned the bloc on Sunday that reprisals by Brussels could jeopardize the supply of Qatari gas to EU member states.

Omnibus Bill Gives DOJ $212.1M Increased Budget to Prosecute January 6 Prisoners

The $1.7 trillion omnibus bill will provide a larger budget for the Justice Department to prosecute January 6 prisoners, a House Appropriations Committee summary revealed Tuesday.

If the bill passes in the next few days, the DOJ’s budget “to further support prosecutions related to the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol and domestic terrorism cases” will increase $212.1 million from current levels of the $2.63 billion annual budget.

The DOJ had previously asked Congress for only $34 million in its 2023 budget to fund 130 employees to investigate the 80 January 6 prisoners. Instead, the budget was expanded to $212.1 million.

“The cases are unprecedented in scale and [it] is expected to be among the most complex investigations prosecuted by the Department of Justice,” the DOJ previously told Congress, claiming the funding was “necessary for the continued prosecutions of the growing number of cases related to this breach of the U.S. Capitol that has left the Department with an immense task of finding and charging those responsible for the attacks.”

Omnibus Bill Includes over $11 Million in LGBT Special Interest Projects

Congressional Democrats unveiled an over 4,000-page, $1.7 trillion government funding package early Tuesday morning, leaving lawmakers little time to review the text and vote on it before a looming government shutdown on Friday at midnight. Experts point out that the omnibus bill’s earmarks include over $11 million in LGBT-themed projects, and GOP lawmakers say the special interest spending could be avoided if the omnibus was delayed until January when the newly elected Republican-led House would be in power.

The earmarks laid out for LGBT-themed special interest projects in the omnibus spending bill include:

$1.2 million for “LGBTQIA Pride Centers” at San Diego Community College

$1 million for Zora’s Housein Ohio, a “coworking and community space” for “women and gender-expansive people of color”

$3 million for the American LGBTQ Museum in New York City

$1 million designated for “LGBT special services program as a part of the VAWA grant funding”

$250,000 for “Our Lives Matter,” a gay rights law archive in Wisconsin

$750,000 for the “TransLatin@ Coalition” to provide “workforce development programs and supportive services for Transgender and Gender nonconforming and Intersex (TGI) immigrant women in Los Angeles”

$105,000 for a mentoring program for LGBT youth in the greater Pittsburg area

$856,000 for an “LGBT Center” in New York

$523,345 for Compass LGBT Youth and Social Services programing

$113,520 for an LGBT Center of Greater Reading, Pa.

$500,000 to establish a staff position for Special Advisor to Advance the Human Rights of LGBTQIA persons

$1.5 million for an LGBT community center new home project in New York

$750,000 for “LGBT and Gender Non-Conforming housing” in Albany, New York

Other earmarks include millions of dollars in highly controversial “diversity, equity, and inclusion” special interest projects.

On Monday, 13 House Republicans led by Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) released a letter voicing strong opposition to bill, saying that it fails to curb excess spending while inflation is still high and fails to “secure and defend our borders.” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) expressed support for the letter in a tweet Tuesday. A large contingent of GOP lawmakers have argued that passing a short-term spending bill to delay the omnibus until January will allow a House Republican majority to set spending priorities.

Connor Semelsberger, director of Federal Affairs for Life and Human Dignity at Family Research Council, remarked on the high number of special interest earmarks present in the omnibus bill.

Researchers published their findings in the British weekly scientific journal Nature. Titled "Brown-fat-mediated tumour suppression by cold-altered global metabolism," they found that rodents with cancerous cells that were continuously exposed to very low temperatures, but above freezing, for 20 days, experienced an activation of their brown fat tissue, which burns energy rather than storing it, diminishing the tumors' energy supply.

"Similarly, cold exposure of tumour-bearing mice also markedly inhibited the growth rates of these tumour types," the study said.

New Scientist explained more about the study:

To eliminate the possibility that the tumour suppression was down to something other than the cold therapy, Cao [researcher Yihai Cao] and his team intervened in several ways. After surgically removing the cold-exposed mice's brown fat, or turning off the gene by which brown fat generates heat, tumour inhibition was absent.

The inhibition was also absent when the mice were fed a high-glucose diet, suggesting that the tumours' growth was inhibited by a lack of glucose. The team also performed a genetic analysis on the cold-exposed tumours, finding a decrease in markers associated with glucose consumption.

Omnibus Spending Bill: $410M for Border Security — in the Middle East

The spending bill includes $410 million “for enhanced border security” in Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Tunisia, and Oman. At least $150 million of the funding is to be used to help Jordan secure its borders.

The hundreds of millions of dollars for border security thousands of miles away from the U.S. comes after Republicans and Democrats negotiated a similar plan in March that saw about $370 million go to border security initiatives in the Middle East and North Africa.

In June of last year, Congress authorized nearly a billion dollars in border security initiatives for Middle Eastern and North African countries.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden’s administration is projected to oversee 2.6 million border crossers and illegal aliens arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border next year — a figure that would eclipse this year’s record of about 2.3 million encounters.

If the projections pan out, some 6.9 million border crossers and illegal aliens will have been apprehended at the border since 2021 to 2023 under Biden. This is a foreign population just two million short of New York City’s resident population.

Biblical

Romans 11:1-36

I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he appeals to God against Israel? “Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.” But what is God's reply to him? “I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace.
