The official story told by McConnell becomes increasingly questionable when we look at the diagnosis of “Optic Neuritis”.
Optic Neuritis is a partial, transient vision loss (usually lasting less than one hour), and can be caused by many underlying issues. The diagnosis is often associated with Multiple Sclerosis.
According to Dr. Timothy Allen, Chief Medical Officer with the US Military in Louisville, KY, at the time the Kentucky Kernel article was written, Optic Neuritis has never been enough of a reason for an individual to be medically discharged from the military, both then as it is now. It was a treatable symptom with steroids, and would have returned him back to normal in three to four weeks. This dichotomy has never been addressed by McConnell, or Fort Knox.
There was also mention of conflicting information coming out of McConnell’s own office. Robert Steurer, press secretary at the time and current communications director for McConnell in Washington, told Padgett, “Senator McConnell had polio as a child and he never served in armed services. I am not aware of him ever serving.”
Mitch has had high level connections his entire life. Check the bio of his "mentor" John Sherman Cooper, a child rep during the Roaring 20s, Weimar Republic in full swing..
