My dad always told me to sock (as in literally) 10% per payday. If you have to dive into that 10% you are beyond broke. He was also an advocate for hard assets. I do 10% into Brass, Lead, Aluminum, Silver, Gold, Steel and Derivatives of Carbon depending on the market and what deals I can find.

I killed 3 cars from 1985 to 1990. One was a 1971 Mustang convertible. Wrecking that is one of my biggest regrets. Car would be worth $50,000 right now and I destroyed it in a parking lot doing doughnuts in the snow.
