During the Civil War the region was apparently protected from ransacking by Federal forces by denying they were representing the Confederacy. Instead the people stood up to defend their own homes.
Here's a quote: "the region was not ransacked as other places had been and after the war the citizens stubbornly refused to be Reconstructed or governed by outside forces."
For some reason this story seems relevant to what we face right now.
