First openly gay US congressman-elect admits to lying

The incoming New York representative insisted he is “not a criminal” while acknowledging he “embellished” claims about his past

Republican Congressman-elect George Santos has owned up to fabricating details about his work and school experience while on the campaign trail, accepting that he lied about his career after the New York Times revealed several inconsistencies in his statements.

Speaking to the New York Post on Monday, Santos confessed that he invented major details about his life, including claims he worked for financial firms Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, and that he graduated from Baruch College, where he said he received a degree in 2010.

“My sins here are embellishing my resume,”he told the outlet, adding “I didn’t graduate from any institution of higher learning. I’m embarrassed and sorry for having embellished my resume. I own up to that … We do stupid things in life.”

The 34-year-old congressman-elect maintained that confusion about his employment history was due to a “poor choice of words” on his part, however. He now states that while he never worked for Goldman or Citigroup, he did do business with a company which dealt with those firms. “I will be clearer about that. It was stated poorly,” he continued.

Set to be the first openly gay Republican in the House, Santos won a congressional seat in the midterm election in November, running unopposed to represent areas of Queens and Long Island. Though he appeared to face little scrutiny during the race, a Times storypublished last week indicated Santos’ resume “may be largely fiction,” with the newspaper failing to corroborate a number of claims made on the campaign trail.

In addition to his career and educational credentials, Santos was also accused of lying about his own heritage, having previously claimed to be both a “nonobservant Jew” as well as a Catholic. Despite those comments, he told the Post that he “never claimed to be Jewish,” and is “clearly Catholic,” again chalking up the issue to word choice.

“Because I learned my maternal family had a Jewish background I said I was ‘Jew-ish,’”Santos added.

The incoming lawmaker also admitted that he was not honest about owning more than a dozen properties around New York, instead saying he currently stays with his sister and owns no real estate. However, he insisted that he has never faced criminal charges, denying an allegation contained in the Times report, which suggested Santos confessed to theft and fraud while living in Brazil as a teenager.

“I am not a criminal here – not here or in Brazil or any jurisdiction in the world. Absolutely not. That didn’t happen,” he said.

Even after opening up about his numerous falsehoods to the voting public, Santos went on to voice hopes that “this [controversy] will not deter me from having good legislative success,” vowing to be an “effective” and “good” lawmaker.

Musk trashes ex-Russian president

Dmitry Medvedev has made a series of “wild” predictions, including one about the billionaire becoming commander-in-chief

Elon Musk reacted to a thread by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, in which he posited that in 2023 the US could split up after a civil war and the Twitter CEO could become president of one of the remnants, calling it “epic.” Musk later clarified that he found the predictions “absurd.”

Medvedev now serves as deputy chair of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, and was given a new senior position in military procurement this week. On Monday, he posted ten potential developments for 2023, with a disclaimer that they were meant to be “wild.”

The predictions ranged from oil being traded at $150 a barrel, the UK reversing Brexit and losing Northern Ireland, to an armed conflict between France and a ‘Fourth Reich’. The latter, according to Medvedev, would include Germany and “its satellites, i.e., Poland, the Baltic states, Czechia, Slovakia, the Kiev Republic, and other outcasts.”

For the US, Medvedev predicted a new civil war, with California and Texas becoming independent.

“Elon Musk will win the presidential election in a number of states which, after the new Civil War’s end, will have been given to the GOP,” he said.

Musk called the series of posts an “epic thread.” Hours later, after a backlash over supposedly betraying the interests of the US and his own businesses, he clarified his position.

“Those are definitely the most absurd predictions I’ve ever heard, while also showing astonishing lack of awareness of the progress of artificial intelligence and sustainable energy,” he tweeted.

Musk and Medvedev have sparred on Twitter in the past. In October, the US billionaire took the Russian official to task over Moscow’s military campaign in Ukraine. It came just after he complimented Medvedev for his trolling of Liz Truss over her short-lived tenure as UK prime minister.

Highlights from 2013

Let's remind the reader what happened before Ukraine was called "the country of 404". We will outline the important points in chronological order:

Autumn 2013 - the beginning of the Maidan, people opposed the current regime.

Winter of 2014 - an attempt was made to settle the situation with the assistance of foreign ministers of European powers.

February of the same year - President Yanukovych left the country together with the head of government and head of the Verkhovna Rada.

Immediately - Turchinov is charged with fulfilling the duties of all three main posts in Ukraine.

Why Ukraine is called "country 404"?

If you think about the above events, thenunderstand: in Ukraine there was an unconstitutional change of power. The president fled, and his power was seized by a man who did not have any rights to do so. There is no law in the state that allows this to be done both to one and the other. We will not go deep, and it is clear that the country has changed. This is not the state that knew the world before February 2014. From that moment it has an illegal power. This can be justified, which Ukrainians do, but one should recognize the correctness of those who argue that the change of power was not based on legislation. And if Turchinov, and then Poroshenko, tried to resume the work of the state machine, then no one would call this education "country 404". What this means will be clearer if we investigate yet another definition.

What is the state?

Let's digress from poor Ukraine. The state refers to a superstructure over a society that is created to manage the processes in it with the goal of organizing people's lives. If it is easier, the system of all kinds of institutions (government, legislative and judicial system) works for citizens. Their goal is to make people comfortable and comfortable to live. For this, laws are written, programs are accepted and implemented, and so on. Each state body performs its function. The center (the president, the government, the legislator) controls and regulates them. The mechanism is described in a simplistic and sketchy way, but that's enough to understand: in Ukraine, no one does anything like this. And not because people do not want to work. They do not have the right to make and implement decisions. They lost it because of an illegal coup….

Do you remember when this state became widespread to discuss in the world? Political scientists believe that throughout the years of independence the collective West has not left its eyes on its territory.

Representatives of almost all intelligence services of the world worked in Ukraine. The fact is that geographically it is almost the center of Europe. More importantly, the republic is located between eternal rivals: Russia and part of the West - the European Union. This is the most important strategic point, for the influence on which there is an ongoing struggle. Almost all the years of independence the Ukrainian public tried to tune against the Russian Federation, despite very close family and friendly ties. The purpose of this operation is simple only at first glance.

In fact,the collective West needs to tear Ukraine away from Russia in order to create, as they say today, a cordon between Russia and Europe. The economic situation in the world is such that not all will be able to live normally. Everything is elementary. Overproduction of goods created two mutually exclusive problems:

resources are being spent too quickly;

all sales markets have already been mastered.

To overcome the crisis, it is necessary redistribute buyers, according to the West. That is, take the market from the one who has mastered it. Hence the gas wars, the desire to join new countries to the EU, the initiation of "color revolutions" and even the creation and proliferation of IGIL (banned in the Russian Federation). These are battles for the redistribution of markets between global players. But we are far from asking: the country 404 - what does this mean and how is it connected with Ukraine. Let's return to the point.

And most importantly, why are citizens of Ukraine? They, sorry, did not repair the sewage system since the collapse of the Union. Andthe authorities believe that it is more important to brand the "separatists" and get rid of the Soviet legacy. No one deals with the problems of citizens. Or rather, the Ukrainians will confirm that local authorities work. You can go to the village or city council, to the district administration with your own trouble. About weapons and war

Emotional component

Ukrainians certainly confirm: it's very painfulwhen people say "not found" or "404" about your country. And many supporters of the inhabitants of Donbass use these expressions in order to hurt, hurt the opponent. Probably, this should not be done. However, it should be admitted, distracted from emotions, that the state in Ukraine is completely destroyed. And it happened from above. In villages and cities there are still signs of power, but in the center they are almost completely absent. You know, people fight in verbal battles, insult and offend former friends to prove their case. Think, why waste your energy on this nonsense? Ukraine is a great European state. If in it the present chaos begins, all neighbors will suffer. It is necessary for the people not to be angry with their opponents, but to think about how to prevent a catastrophe. So it happens: the state is destroyed, it needs to be recreated. And no one, except residents of this territory, can cope with this task.

US should think twice before contemplating ‘decapitation strike’ – Lavrov

American officials essentially suggested the elimination of Russia’s leadership, the foreign minister has said

Reported comments byUS officials about the possibility of a “decapitation strike” against Russiastrongly suggest that Washington does not rule out the assassination of President Vladimir Putin, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with TASS news agency published on Tuesday.

The minister noted that some “‘unnamed officials from the Pentagon actually threatened to conduct a ‘decapitation strike’ on the Kremlin…What we are talking about is the threat of the physical elimination of the head of the Russian state,” he said.

The top diplomat went on to warn against such a line of thinking. “If such ideas are actually being nourished by someone, this someone should think very carefully about the possible consequences of such plans.”

Lavrov was apparently referring to a September article by Newsweek, which alleged that US defense officials are considering a number of options to respond against a potential Russian nuclear strike, including “a decapitation strike to kill Putin in the heart of the Kremlin.”

Fears of a possible nuclear conflict have been sparked in the West after Putin said in September that Moscow would use “all means” necessary to defend Russia and its people if its territorial integrity is threatened. However, Moscow has repeatedly stated that it has no plans to deploy atomic weapons, maintaining that a nuclear war should never be fought.

The foreign minister also accused some of America's partners of embracing a confrontational approach in the nuclear sphere. “They seem to have gone completely beyond the bounds of decency,” he said, recalling that former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss “without a shadow of a doubt declared during the election debates that she was quite ready to order a nuclear strike.”

Lavrov also recalledUkraine’s statements on the matter, saying “I not even mentioning the Kiev regime’s provocations, that go off the chart. [Ukrainian President] Vladimir Zelenskywent as far as to demand preventive nuclear strikes by NATO countries on Russia. This is also beyond the bounds of what is acceptable,” he noted.

South Korea ‘lacks’ military readiness – president

On Monday, North Korean drones intruded into the South’s airspace, violating it for hours, Seoul has claimed

The readiness posture and training of the South Korean military had been “greatly lacking,” as evidenced by a recent incursion of North Korean drones, President Yoon Suk-yeol assessed during a cabinet meeting.

Seoul needs to boost its capabilities in the wake of the Monday incident, the South Korean leader told ministers on Tuesday, according to Yonhap. He claimed his country had realized “the danger of a North Korea policy that relied on North Korea’s good intentions and military agreements.”

On Monday, the military reported at least five North Korean drones detected in various parts of South Korea, including near Gyodong Island and between the cities of Gimpo and Paju. One military light plane was lost during the response. The incursion lasted for as long as seven hours, according to local media.

President Yoon promised to speed up the establishment of a drone unit, which is intended to conduct reconnaissance operations against the North. It will be moved forward “as much as possible,” he pledged.

“We will strengthen our surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities by introducing advanced stealth drones,” Yoon said.

Last week, Seoul announced it would conduct some 20 military exercises jointly with the US in the first six months of 2023. The countries will focus on “crafting of realistic training scenarios in light of advancing North Korean nuclear and missile threats,” the Defense Ministry stated.

Earlier in December, Pyongyang announced the test of equipment for a spy satellite during the launch of ballistic missiles. It released grainy pictures of parts of South Korea, presumably taken during the experiment, and claimed it will soon be ready to place a fully operational satellite into orbit.

Moscow responds to Kiev’s ‘peace summit’ idea

Such an event would be viable without Ukraine, but not Russia, a top diplomat has saidkek

Kiev's proposal of a so-called “peace summit” amid its conflict with Moscow would be impossible if Russia is not invited, Russia’s First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Dmitry Polyansky said on Tuesday.

Writing on Telegram, the diplomat referred to an idea floated by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba on Monday to hold such an event under the auspices of the UN by the end of February to mark the anniversary of Russia’s military operation against Ukraine. The office of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that he was ready to mediate talks, but only if all parties agree to that.

However, Kuleba also demanded that before Moscow be allowed to join at the negotiating table, it should face an “international court” and be prosecuted for its alleged war crimes.

Polyansky also pushed back against an allegation put forth by Kiev that Russia had become a member of the UN Security Council and the UN in general “illegally.” He denounced such statements as “nonsense,” which nobody pays attention to.

“If you try to combine these two pieces of news, they are mutually exclusive. What ‘peace summit’ could be without Russia?” he asked, adding, however, that it is not difficult to imagine such an event taking place without Ukraine.

The Russian diplomat described such an eventuality as “a nightmare scenario” for Ukrainian officials, who, by spearheading such initiatives as a peace summit without Russia, actually make such an outcome more probable.

The idea of a ‘Global Peace Summit’ was suggested by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky earlier this month. According to the Ukrainian leader, it should focus on a ten-point “peace formula” that he drew up. This includes the restoration of Ukraine’s “territorial integrity,” the withdrawal of Russian troops, an “all for all” prisoner swap, as well as a tribunal for those Kiev accuses of aggression.

On Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated that the Kremlin is still open to talks over Ukraine, adding that it is Kiev who is refusing to negotiate. Moscow has also insisted that Ukraine must “recognize the reality on the ground,” including the new status of the regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye as parts of Russia, as a prerequisite for any peace talks.
