OP has the explanation. it causes errors to be made in creating the protein coat. in translation of genetic code to construct a protein, tRNAs go out and latch onto a specific amino acid and attach it to the terminus of the growing protein chain. but the selectivity of the tRNAs is NOT 100%. so by flooding the surrounding medium with lysine while depleting it of all other amino acids, eventually a tRNA that codes for some other amino acid will erroneously bind to a lysine, and stick it onto the growing protein chain. these amino acid errors will cause the protein to fold improperly and result in gross distortions of the final protein, rendering it useless as the protective coating. the exposed genetic material of the virus will then be quickly degraded (killed).
